Very hairy newborn girl

The first thing i noticed after my daughter was born was her hairy forehead. It was very distressing but i became even more distressed when i saw her hairy back, shoulders, arms, thighs and ears. My mum says i shouldn't worry as the hair will disappear soon. However, i keep thinking about it all the time. The midwives who visit us always comment on it expecting me to make a joke but i just ignore those comments. i just imagine my poor baby carrying all this fur throughout her life. One pediatrician said it's because of my hormones so i blame myself now. I also thought could it be because of pregnacare multivitamin which contains biotin - a supplement which improves hair and nails. I'd appreciate it if you shared your experience with me. Does that hair really disappear and when?

Yes it does, dd2 looked like a werewolf, dark hair on ears, forehead, back etc, I think gone by 3 months now she's 6 mos and normal. Don't worry!

My sister was really hairy like that when she was born and it disappeared when she was still a baby - sorry I can't be more specific on the timing.

StopShoutingAtYourBrother · 25/04/2015 14:52

Congratulations on your new baby :) my dd was like this too at birth. It's perfectly natural and due to the influence of your hormones. As your dm says now that she had been born you'll see gradually her baby hair will fall out to be replaced with her own, and usually much lighter growth hair. Please do not worry - you haven't done anything to damage your baby.

My dd was quite hairy at birth. It's called lanugo, and is there to keep the baby warm in the womb. Most of it disappears before birth, but a lot of babies still have a fair amount when they're born. Don't worry, it really does disappear, although sometimes takes a few weeks; DD had little tufts on her ears till about 3 months old (that was the last bit of hairiness to go).

I don't know about vitamins, but can't imagine that enough crossed the placenta to have that much effect, and anyway biotin improves the strength of hair, it doesn't make you grow extra, at least not as far as I am aware.

Blazing88 · 25/04/2015 14:55

My DD still has a hairy back, which I don't really like, but the rest of it has disappeared.

DurhamDurham · 25/04/2015 14:57

My now 17 year old dd was born quite hairy, she had hairy ears and a hairy back, I still thought she was the most beautiful little thing ever. With in a few weeks it had all gone although she is still very dark with almost black hair and has to shave her legs more often than me or her sister Grin

garun12 · 25/04/2015 14:57

thanks dears! i know i just need to be patient. she's 13 days old now so i guess it's still very early for hair to disappear.

DD1 was really hairy (DD2 isn't at all). We took loads of photos which we will no doubt use to embarass her with in years to come. I found it quite cute! She's 3 now and still has a bit on her back, but otherwise it all went really quickly. Don't worry about it, honestly.

BellMcEnd · 25/04/2015 15:00

My first baby was very hairy like his dad but it soon went. I thought it was rather sweet, like a little animal. He had lovely furry shoulders and ears. Don't worry, it'll soon go. Congratulations on your lovely baby Flowers

BertieBotts · 25/04/2015 15:00

It's unusual but not abnormal - don't worry! It will fall out, and it's nothing you've done. I bet she's dead cute Grin

DurhamDurham · 25/04/2015 15:02

Is his name David Brent by any chance? I used to love watching the office but it did cross my mind how horrific it would be to be married to someone like David Brent.

DurhamDurham · 25/04/2015 15:03

Ignore last message clearly meant for another page and absolutely nothing to do with our lovely little hairy babies GrinGrin

FenellaFellorick · 25/04/2015 15:04

Apparently I was so furry I looked like a monkey :D
It goes. Don't worry.
Congrats on your baby Thanks

It's lanugo, don't worry it's normal, good even, kept her warm in your womb.

durham sorry, I laughed Grin at DB.

think I was quite a hairy baby. Grew up not v hairy at all.

Pico2 · 25/04/2015 15:24

DD1 had a hairy back, DD2 had hairy ears. I don't understand why they would need hair to keep them warm in the womb as your womb is at body temperature, what with it being inside you.

Primafacie · 25/04/2015 15:37

Fenella (and OP) DS was born 7 weeks early and extremely hairy. So much so that DS, aged two, the first time she saw him, said really cheerfully: "oh mummy! You got a baby monkey!" She was slightly disappointed when I said that no, actually he was just a normal boy.

He lost all the baby hair over the next weeks and months. By the time he was a few months old he was completely hairless. He is four now and normal (hairwise at least!).

Primafacie · 25/04/2015 15:38

*DD was aged 2 and thought DS was a monkey!

GlitzAndGigglesx · 25/04/2015 15:40

My dd had downy hair on her ears for months after birth! It was prominent but eventually dropped off on its own

redspottydress · 25/04/2015 15:46

I missed my dd's hairy ears after the hair had fallen off and wished I had a photo of them! One of my babies also looked facially quite like a baby chimp and had lots of hair. He doesn't now!

Applecross · 25/04/2015 15:53

I remember worrying the hairy ears wouldn't go - actually had to check the tips of my own ears in case it had escaped my notice! The back fur was funny too!
