FTM with a 5 week old and wonder a couple of things:

  1. When did people start using water wipes instead of cotton wool and water? Are there major cons to the wipes? Sick of the cotton pads but not to the extent of causing negative effects for DS
  1. When you give your babies cooled boiled water (I need to use it to dissolve gaviscon), how long to allow yourself to use the water before you reboil? Could I boil enough water for a whole day's worth of gaviscon and keep it with me?

Just not sure what's 'too much'??

Thanks

I used buggies wipes as soon as me and DD left hospital. Couldn't handle the faffing about with it all and it reminded me of being in scbu. She has never had a rash from them.

The water I used to boil, leave it half an hour and make a bottle up. I would refill the bottle with fresh water every four hours but I'm really weird about drinks anyway (they have to be used in four hours or else they are chucked away)

Hopefully someone who's not as crazy as me will give you their opinion as well Smile

H.uggies

Bloody phone keeps changing it haha!

  1. Used cotton wool and water with dd for about 10 days before switching to wipes. DS I used from day 1, no issue with either.
  2. Mmm I have in my head that I'd only use the water within 2-3 hours of being boiled but have nothing to base that decision on?!
Probably no help, sorry!

Used Huggies on leaving hospital. Occasionally with Pampers wipes too. No rash here. Not sure why people both with water wipes. V expensive for what they are. Think it's a PFB thing.

purplemurple1 · 21/04/2015 02:55

I used wipes from birth with both dc neither had any issues.

Water i keep for a couple of days at room temp in a sterilised bottle.

purplemurple1 · 21/04/2015 02:58

Bottle has a lid of course.

m33r · 21/04/2015 03:47

Thanks everyone.

With the wipes, I say 'water wipes' but I assume that is just the wipes that say 'as pure as cotton wool and water' or is there some sort of magic super expensive wipes?

Of course there r! Can't have a gap in the new parent's market ;)
Don't know brands though.
At 5 weeks I would try wipes and see how baby's skin is.

purplemurple1 · 21/04/2015 05:10

I use shops own basic wet wipes and have from birth.

cathpip · 21/04/2015 05:17

Huggies pure baby wipes from birth, midwives used them in the hospital too. With the dc that were bottle fed I made up 12 hrs worth of bottles in advance so I was not faffing with cooling boiled water at 3am.

Tiredstressed · 21/04/2015 05:56

Wipes from birth here (whatever is on offer!). The midwife was very pleased when I produced them in the hospital - meconium can be a bugger to remove.

icklekid · 21/04/2015 06:00

Try sensitive wipes and if no problem continue if is a rash wait until later (am sure will be fine!)

Water I boil first/last thing and leave in fridge after cooled. but everyone does things differently and I don't think there is a right/wrong just what works for you!

purpleapple1234 · 21/04/2015 06:03

Re: the water. Once you boil the water you have killed all the microorganisms in it. Then if you put it into a sterilised bottle with a sterilised lid and leave it in the fridge, I doubt anything is going to grow in there. I'd just use up all the water. It'll perfectly safe.

RowRowRowCrocodileScream · 21/04/2015 06:05

I used Water Wipes when out and about from when we got out of hospital (if you can't find them in local shop Amazon sell them). Can't remember when switched to normal wipes.

m33r · 21/04/2015 10:31

Thank you everyone!! Much appreciated.

Am getting on to the wipes today! Grin

Water wipes were on the market when DS was born 6.5 years ago, I think they were a new thing then.

The "sensitive" wipes which claim to be as gentle as water are not. Wipe one on your eye if you want to test that theory! (Don't!)

I used normal wipes from birth but continued to use cotton wool and water at home because I could use warm water and it just seemed kinder!

BertieBotts · 21/04/2015 10:46

Oh god way too many exclamation marks in my post, sorry. I am not jumping around like an excited five year old, I've just drunk coffee. Grin

PisforPeter · 21/04/2015 10:57

Wipes are fine!
Boil it once.
Nipples etc aren't sterile either!!
Try to relax a little Flowers

Bobian123 · 21/04/2015 11:16

OP, if you're interested, I'd also recommend "cheeky wipes" website-they sell reusable wipes (basically flannels). Love them for DS (use a chamomile oil with them) and will be using them with water only for newborn DD.

LosingNemo · 21/04/2015 11:22

Like other PPs I used cotton wool for a couple of weeks with first child, then straight into wipes for the second.
If you want to use disposable wipes: I've used all sorts but have found the aldi ones as good as any others.

The only ones I've disliked are the tesco newborn ones, because I found them foamy.

Tallblue · 21/04/2015 11:50

Another recommendation for cheeky wipes, they are great, especially for dealing with poonamis!

Lolly86 · 21/04/2015 11:58

Used water and cotton wool until about 6 weeks as she was a tiny thing and wipes just seemed huge to her ?? then onto whichever wipes are on offer

mariposa10 · 21/04/2015 12:07

I still use cotton wool and water at 4 months, I find wipes so abrasive. Just think it must feel so much nicer on his skin. And creates less waste.

NickyEds · 21/04/2015 13:07

I used water and cotton wool for around 5 days. After that bf and general new baby stuff became such a ball ache that I decided to get rid of any extra work and used wipes! Wipes will be coming to hospital with me this time although I know that the mw will pull faces!

MrsHenryCrawford · 21/04/2015 21:06

Used wipes from about two weeks. With dc 2 they will be coming to the hospital with me.
For the water for something like gaviscon I would boil the kettle and use the cooled boiled water over the next 24 hours
