Hi all, my DD is almost 3 months old. She has a bout of gastroenteritis which the doctor has said should go away on its own buts its left her bum so sore she screams everytime she does a poo (which is 6 or 7 times a day at the mo) the doc has said it should go once she is over the diarrhoea and in the mean time I'm using a nappy rash ointment from boots to try and treat it, and she has had Calpol when its really bad but I was wondering if anyone had any experience or tips in easing her pain :(

As much nappy off time to let the air get to her bottom and Metanium nappy cream works a treat. A barrier cream such a sudacrem will act as a barrier against the wee and poo on her skin.

CelibacyCakeAndFuckThePO · 11/04/2015 19:28

Ditch the baby wipes. Cotton wool and cool water.

I use zinc and castor oil lotion (very cheap but effective), have found that works 100 times better than sudocrem.

Try and give her bum a bit of free time, as long as you can with no nappy on.

If you're breast feeding, some expressed milk on her bum a few times a day may help (seems like an old wives tale but it worked for us!)

Seconding Metanium. That stuff is fantastic.

I've used Naty nappies when DD is sore. They are not as absorbent, so you do need to change them more often, but they are chemical free so far kinder to skin. Also plenty of nappy free time.

Hope your little one gets much better soon.

ipswichwitch · 11/04/2015 19:33

Another vote for metanium. The yellow one is great for improving nappy rash and the white one as a general barrier if it looks like coming back. DS1 used to get awful nappy rash until I discovered this.

FinallyGotAnIPhone · 11/04/2015 19:36

Metanium

eastcoastmum2014 · 11/04/2015 19:38

Thankyou so much, I will get her meanium cream and give her some nappy free time. She is snoozing on me atm but I know the second she does a poo she I going to wake and scream! Its breaking my heart seeing her in pain the poor little mite :(

Metanium yellow one works wonders

GlitzAndGigglesx · 11/04/2015 19:40

No bubbles in bath and no moisturiser after, just a good nappy cream and as much air time as possible

TooManyDicksOnTheDancefloor · 11/04/2015 19:41

Another vote for metanium, amazing stuff. Use it sparingly and don't get it on clothes, it's a bugger to get out!

Branleuse · 11/04/2015 19:56

i would keep the nappy totally off and just lie her on towels, or carry her with a towel

mrsmugoo · 11/04/2015 21:26

Mine recently had a bad nappy rash and it required daktarin as it was fungal. Cleared up in a day with the cream.

notquitegrownup2 · 11/04/2015 21:29

Yy to metanium and yy to using it very sparingly You only need the tiniest amount. It is magic!

SewingAndCakes · 11/04/2015 21:32

Another vote for yellow metanium here

AmandaTanen · 11/04/2015 21:39

Lots of nappy free time, changing nappies very frequently and maybe going up a size so there is more room inside.

FreeButtonBee · 11/04/2015 21:43

Yes to yellow metanium, very thinly (should see skin underneath) then top with ultra thick layer of sudocreme. Nappy free time as much as possible (with just metanium on) I used a cheap fleece blanket from primary for the floor for baby to lie on. Easy to wash and v quick to dry

wheresthelight · 11/04/2015 22:27

bin all the creams as ime they are shite.

wash her with warm water and cotton wool after every poo and make sure you pat her dry (muslin cloths are great for this)

sprinkle cornflour liberally over her bum once dry and pop her nappy back on and I guarantee it will look tons better within 24 hours.

my dd had gastroenteritis which triggered lactose intolerance and I was changing 20+ poopy nappies a day at its height and the creams made her skin so thin that the slightest touch would tear it and cause her to bleed. 24 hours of the above and all the open wounds had closed and within 3 days she had no nappy rash to speak of and has never had it again

Linguini · 11/04/2015 23:33

My lo has just recovered from the worst bout of happy rash.
Mostly echoing above but here are my rules.

No baby wipes, use cotton wool and water then pat dry.
Nappy off as much as possible yes u will need to wash a lot of towels.
Bath in morning and at night, no soaps or creams use hair dryer on baby to dry bottom. (safe distance!)
Bepanthnem has been my miracle cure, heals for fast recovery and acts as a prevention barrier.
I found Sudocreme made the rash come back :-S.
Hope your lo gets better soon.

AntiHop · 12/04/2015 01:44

Try a layer of vaseline over the metanium.

Fifis25StottieCakes · 12/04/2015 02:36

After your have cleaned DC you need to dry the bum before you put the cream on, putting the cream on a damp bum locks the moisture in.

Fifis25StottieCakes · 12/04/2015 02:39

even after using a wipe, you will think its quite dry but it isn't, dry it properly and use zinc and castor oil, Asda little angels cream is good. i cleared my DN rash up doing this, someone told me to do it with my DC years ago

TheTruffleHunter · 12/04/2015 02:41

Please be careful- I know lots of folk recommend metanium but my dd was allergic , already so sore then that stuff on her bottom was awful...it's nasty stuff so toxic

TheTruffleHunter · 12/04/2015 02:43

Meant to add water with cotton wipes helps and also tesco has some pure water wipes - these have been lifesavers for us

VenusRising · 12/04/2015 02:48

Bepanthen was a miracle for us. Dip her bum in a bath of bread soda and pat dry, use a hairdryer, then use Bepanthen. No nappy, let her kick.

Also try and get some probiotics powder like optibac into some formula, or onto your nipple for her to have.

Sorry she's poorly.

coffeenut · 12/04/2015 02:49

I came on to say Bepanthan - I can see that linguini has already recommended. Ditch sudacrem for baby bums as it's very drying
