So said my dd to me last night as she wiped away the tears. So dh is busy making vampire collars and digging out fangs for this evening.

We are meeting friends and their kids in a pub which has special games laid on for this kids this evening but it's not enough.

Other parents, who disapprove of Trick or treating, are coming under similar pressure. The kids appear to be leading a revolution and forcing this cultural change.

Will you be going trick or treating?
What are the rules? Who can you call on?

Or you could hand out tooth brushes and little toothpaste sets instead .

BloodyTenaLady · 31/10/2006 14:21

Well fruit I suppose but gets a bit pricey for you.

jabberthefriendlyghost · 31/10/2006 14:22

How about some sugar-free hard candy?

I think it depends on whereyou live. I live in central london and there is an area near here full of Americans in huge houses. They love this time of year and decorate their houses specially a\nd welcoe trick or treaters. People People converge on this area from all over as they know they will be welcomed. I am taking my 5 yea old and two year old there later and know we will be surrounded by other trick or treaters.

Hark, did I hear the word Nuts, watch those allergies, you dont want a child dropping down dead on Halloween night on your doorstep!

echo's already!

jabberthefriendlyghost · 31/10/2006 14:23

Skribble, funny you should say that. Ex-h is a children's dentist and I always said we should hand out toothbrushes instead of candy!

Skribble · 31/10/2006 14:29

I still have a box of sample size toothpastes I got ages ago perhaps I should wander the streets dressed as a giant decaying tooth and hand them out .

mumfor1standfinaltime · 31/10/2006 14:43

Do it!

Skribble · 31/10/2006 14:45

Damm I have checked and I don't seem to have the tooth costume anymore.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 31/10/2006 14:50

Hand them out if you get anyone knocking on the door! Hmm you have given me an idea..

Skribble · 31/10/2006 14:54

I think I will let MIL choose what to hand out. I have nothing against sweets as a treet and chocolate is even better. So I have chocolate pumpkins for the kids.

Anyway apples make you sick!!!!

Ok I had eaten about 10 apples in the space of 2 hourse before I went home and was very very ill, couldn't eat apples for years.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 31/10/2006 15:00

Think I am bitter as I was never allowed to go trick or treating my Mum used to hang a sign up in the window 'no trick or treating'!

Issymum · 31/10/2006 15:04

The DDs (4 and 5) will go out trick or treating tonight with two other little girls from our road. We'll visit just four houses, all people they know. I pre-arranged the visits last night and for two houses dropped off some 'treats' for them to hand back (one of the little girls is allergic to chocolate and the hosts had only chocolate treats). The real fun for the DDs is going out in the dark wearing a costume and ringing on doorbells. Last year they were completely overcome by the moment and didn't get as far as saying 'trick or treat'! The DDs will save all the treats in what they now call their 'Treat Bags' and eke them out until fresh supplies arrive at Christmas. If I'm feeling really tough, I might get them to make some Halloween Thank You cards at the weekend!

foxinsocks · 31/10/2006 15:08

oh issymum, you are just so downright sensible - I often at your mothering ability!

I have bought lots of sour candy things from Wilkinsons (I did sample them first to make sure they weren't too sour). There are some people round here who give out clementines/satsumas - I have to prime the children in advance to make sure they still look suitably grateful .

Skribble · 31/10/2006 15:11

My kids sweets all go in the treet box too, honestly DD spends longer decorating the box than she ever spends eating any of it .
Means I end up eating all of it, if I manage to get to it before it goes out of date. Christmas stuff last until well into the summer .

yeahinaminute · 31/10/2006 15:20

Well - the young yeahina and all her little pals will be wandering through the village this evening - we the " grown - up's" will fortify ourselves from hip-flasks secreted about our persons (bramble whisky and sloe gin will be our contribution and the the associated 3foot witches, ghouls, cats, ghosties etc will collect and receive various banned substances during their wanderings .... all will be finished off at the pub where the teenagers lay on a party with apple bobbing, jelly snakes in slime dipping etc .... whilst we "the grown - up's" have a small libation and discuss the madness of it all ....we will then return home later than normal as you have to get your round in don't you?? and an attempt will be made to prise the miniature witch from the ceiling where she will be hovering after imbibing a years worth of sweets ........God I love it

Azure · 31/10/2006 15:22

I've always hated the idea of trick or treating but based on last year there are loads of local kids who go around, and most houses are ready to welcome them. I was so impressed last year with how polite the children were, and once I turned off my porch light at around 7pm to put my kids to bed I wasn't disturbed once. I am taking DS1 (and DS2) out tonight for the first time, and I swear he is more excited than he was last Christmas. It's lovely to see him like that - he has no idea about the "trick" part of it, as seems to be the case around here.

RottenOtter · 31/10/2006 15:23

i despair too spidermama
I have bought cookies to give out and hope beyond hope mine eat them in preference to sweets!

ladymariner · 31/10/2006 16:03

Hi everyone. Great messages here, esp like yeahina's - super way to spend halloween!! I never used to let my ds out trick-or-treating, but last year i relented and he had a wonderful time, all dressed up with his friends and me and a couple of the other mums lurking in the background trying to look inconspicuous!! Groundruleslaid though were to knock once and once only, be POLITE, and we were back home by 6.30. Good fun had by all. however, just looked out the window and it's raining!!! Rats!!!

izzybiz · 31/10/2006 16:24

All the kids here do it, they go round in groups and loads of the residents make quite a big thing of it with decorating their houses etc.
Have always told my Ds to only knock once and if anyone says no, to say ok thanks and leave.
There isnt any "tricking" about it really.
Last year i didnt want any knocks as Dd was only very little and in bed so i put a note on the door saying "please dont knock, baby asleep!"
Didnt get any.

Freckle · 31/10/2006 16:35

When the dc's were very small, I used to put up a sign saying "No trick or treaters, please. Baby asleep and very loud dog." I also parked the car across the front door so the only way to get to the door was to climb over some rather prickly bushes.

They still managed it and rang the door bell. Seemed rather puzzled as to why I wasn't very welcoming when I opened the door.

TinyGang · 31/10/2006 16:43

I'm being manoevered here too. It's annoying. We'll be celebrating 'Thanks-Giving' next.

We've just done 3 expensive birthdays and now Christmas is looming. Halloween has been forced on us to make a fast buck. I don't really want to get into T-or-T eother, but it's so difficult. Might go to a couple of neighbours who are equally feeling the pressure.

TinyGang · 31/10/2006 16:44

Meant to say we had some last night too - so now it's not just the 31st it seems!
