Are those bath chairs a must-have?

DD, nearly 7mo, is too splashy for the baby bath but too small and unsteady sitting for me to cling onto in the big bath unless I get in with her. Are those bath chairs any good or a gimic?

I just bath with my baby, I try to avoid unnecessary baby stuff as I don't have much storage!

GREYCROW · 26/03/2015 18:27

Noo! Take the opportunity to have a bath and lay your baby between your legs... Gosh I adored bathing time.

CorBlimeyTrousers · 26/03/2015 18:29

We never had one. I wonder how you'd clean them properly if they're sitting in a seat. As above I usually bathed with the baby and we bought a good old fashioned rubber bathmat which helped avoid slipping.

I didn't find them too useful - and how do you wash the bits they're sitting on?! I had a Terry towelling bath support and that was much better.

beckworth · 26/03/2015 18:35

We have a munchkin inflatable duck bath. £8.50 from Amazon, and I find it really good. Rubber, so relatively non slip, they can sit up right or slouch without being too close to the water, and you can take it away with you. Definitely recommend.

westcountrywoman · 26/03/2015 18:36

No. Just get a decent rubber bath mat so they don't slip and sit them on that. Keep the water shallow enough and they will be fine sitting so you can wash with two hands.

Quitelikely · 26/03/2015 18:36

I disagree! I have used them with my last two dc and they are great. And safe.

You wash their bottom and bits at the end of bath time. Stand them up once you have released the bath plug.

TheGirlAtTheRockShow · 26/03/2015 19:13

We've recently got one for DD. She loves it as she can sit up properly. As quite said, clean bottom when getting out.

fourteen · 26/03/2015 19:21

No they're rubbish.

DS couldn't get at the water enough to play, and I couldn't wash him properly.

Until they can sit up, just lie them in the big bath with a couple of inches of water in it, shallow enough so that it doesn't splash too much in their face. When they're older they can just sit on a rubber mat.

dannydyerismydad · 26/03/2015 19:29

I put the baby bath in the big bath and let him splash as much as he liked. It went over the side and straight down the plug hole. We did this until DS was 3!

Bodicea · 26/03/2015 19:31

I loved the angelcare one ( its turquoise ). It's expensive but was so worth it. It's so much better in comparison to the others. Really easy to bath him and used it in a baby bath to save water - we are on a meter. I leant it to a friend for her second and she can't believe she coped without it for her first.

trilbydoll · 26/03/2015 19:31

They're quite good to save you bending over the bath constantly. Ours is a kiddicare one, it was only about £10. Only used it for that stage where DD could sit up but wasn't 100% stable.

dairyfreequeen · 26/03/2015 19:54

i really like mine (mothercare, a hard plastic one) because it means i dont have to be constantly holding ds, which makes it easy if i need a wash too, to get him in, then me, then get myself out and sorted before him (obviously not taking my eyes off him). Also just being able to have my hands free if need be is good, i still take him out of it to give him a proper wash. But then ds loves splashing in the bath, its not just a case of in and out!

Lonz · 26/03/2015 22:04

I used one, they are so useful. You don't have your hands full when grabbing stuff. You can wash their bottom half at the same time kind of because the water flows through (I filled the bath up to about his belly) And your arm isn't aching after having to hold them too long!

On the other hand it is nice to bathe with your baby, but it's not always gonna happen, is it?

Hoppinggreen · 26/03/2015 22:24

I found mine very useful, especially when I put my back out when DD was about 5 months old.
I still got in the bath with both of my 2 sometimes but if I didn't want to or couldn't the bath seat was brilliant.

purpleme12 · 27/03/2015 00:01

It was a waste of money. I used it once. She kept lying down in bath in very shallow water til she could confidently sit up in the bath without any fear of falling. Then she had bath mat which definitely isn't a waste of money

BackforGood · 27/03/2015 00:15

I found our really, really useful. Couldn't have spent all the hours my dc spent in the bath leaning over, holding them when they wriggled about, all slippery.
I wouldn't want to be having a bath at that time of night - by bathtime is my "me time".

StayGoldPonyBoy · 27/03/2015 00:26

I even used ours when I was in the bath with DD. I'd hold her for a bit, then pop her in the seat so I could have my hands free for a change!

ColdTeaAgain · 27/03/2015 00:51

I didn't bother with one. Either held her or got in with her. Would have the water quite shallow as she liked to lie on her back and splash and kick her legs about.

Katekoom · 27/03/2015 01:14

I second the angelcare one. Really good. I wouldn't be without it! My lo is still v young though so yet to experiment with it when shes older.

We used one for quite a long time, DD was always happy in it. For £10 or so it definitely seemed worth it. Used to splash her with the shower head too at the same time. I wasn't really able to get in the bath with her every time or kneel over to hold her for the whole bath time.

ApplesTheHare · 27/03/2015 19:17

Thanks everyone, as ever really helpful to hear your experiences! I've got a bit of a crap back and can't get in the bath with DD unless DH is around to pick up the bedtime routine immediately afterwards (she has zero patience) so I think a bath chair might be the way to go!

This might be a stupid question but can you use a Bumbo in the bath? We got given one but I'm struggling to find a use for it so far...

OP posts:
VikingLady · 28/03/2015 20:36

Yes you can use a Bumbo in the bath - they are waterproof - but DO NOT LEAVE IT FOR A SECOND! They are not very stable, and he'd be trapped if it went over.

My DD was very splashy in the baby bath, so I just put the baby bath inside the big bath and let her splash!

oobedobe · 29/03/2015 00:49

Just remember bath seats can give you a false sense of security. Never leave a child unattended even for a second. Sorry to have to point this out but statistically they are quiet dangerous.
