Have bought 4 packs of tecos own new born nappies for my yet to be born first child, at only £1.64 a pack of 24. Are cheap nappies any good or are they likely to leak everywhere?

Hello all,

I've just bought 4 packs of tescos own brand newborn nappies at only £1.64 a pack for my soon to be born first child as we are quite poor. Are these cheaper nappies as effective as the more expensive brands or are they likely to leak eveerywhere. Also I'am planning on using the reusable nappies & wondered if the birth to toddler ones are eny good so I don't end up having to spend too much. I'll be grateful for any advice.

I use tescos own, they are fab. Much better than huggies. Good luck to you.

lulumama · 29/10/2006 16:37

hi - i have bought 'value ' nappies once....false economy IMO- plasticy, leaky & left DD red

new borns can have quite explosive nappies, so what you might save on value nappies...you might lose on extra washing or even binning poo splattered babygros & vests!

i have used lidl & aldi nappies which are around £5.60 for 50 nappies....so still good value, their wipes are excellent too , 99p per pack i think.

they are excellent, absorbent and just as good , imo, as premium brands

don'y buy too many newborn sized nappies just in case your baby is on the bigger side

HTH!

lulumama · 29/10/2006 16:38

sorry tesco onw brand..around £4.80 a pack are good....i think you were referring to the 'value ones?

hi sallymadge. think the ones youve got should do the job nicely. only thing to look out for is that they grow so damn fast when very new that he or she may have grown out of them before you get a chance to use them all! (i did that, all 3 times)

so dont buy any more just yet!

congrats, btw.

intergalacticwerewolf · 29/10/2006 16:42

I used disposibles for a while and found them all much of a muchness tbh.Esecially for a newborn, because you change them so often. your cheapy nappies will probably be fine. I used to use asda nappies with much success.

I'm using washables now, and I use Bumbles with mmmotherease airflow wraps. they are great for DS1(22 months) and ds2 (8 weeks) I initially bought 15 nappies, 4 wraps and a nappy bucket for £139. I also bought some more smaller wraps for ds2, which cost me about 15 quid, IIRC. If you don't mind using 2nd hand nappies, you can llok on the classified section of the nappy lady, or on here or on ebay.

Hope this makes sense! Good luck with your baby

yomellamoHelly · 29/10/2006 16:44

Tried them when ds newborn. Were useless - very leaky and caused a rash. I do know others who swore by them. I suppose the answer is some brands'll suit your db and others won't and as they grow and you may find yourself switching brands too (cerainly we had to a couple of times).

nappy lady classifieds

The nappy lady also does an excellent questionaire service which is free, where they advise you on the best nappies to suit your lifestyle/budget. There is no obligation to buy anything. I did this, and it was fab.

Tesco newborn are much better than pampers / huggies IME - I never had a leak with them, unlike pampers.

I have used all brands!! the best are tesco, lidl, aldi IMO. Sainsburys, Asda, Boots and morrissons are also fine.

sallymadge · 29/10/2006 16:51

No, I haven't gone as far as buying the tesco value ones, but they're one up from that. Doctor reckons the baby should be about 8 pounds or over, another 4 weeks to go, I'll refrain from buying any more!

i bought thses - they aren't the value ones and they are fab. astonishingly cheap too.

Not sure if I would buy too many teeny ones thiough as at 10.5 pounds mine is quite snug in the up to 13 pound size.

NannyL · 29/10/2006 17:23

I HATE dispoables ( a cloth fan) but IMO tescos are as good as pampers and better than huggies (whish ALWAYS leak when I use them... tho dont seem to leak for anyone else!)

Mum2FunkyDude · 29/10/2006 17:26

If your lo poo's like mine did you'll use 12 napies a day...I remember having to use 3 nappies while changing him, as soon as you have one on he poos again!!!!

colditz · 29/10/2006 17:26

Once baby is out of Newborn nappies, Morrison's nappies are brilliant and less than £4 a pack. I prefer these to pampers.

divastrop · 29/10/2006 17:28

i found tesco newborn ones the best but switched to pampers when dd2 went up to the next size.but my other 3 were in the mini size from birth as newborn were too small!
IME 4 packs will last about a week with a newborn-i seem to remember getting through at least 12 nappies a day at that stage.

twinklemegan · 29/10/2006 18:06

Hi Sallymadge, I use terries mostly but started with Tescos own brand newborn disposables in hospital, and from then on overnight at home. My LO was 8lb 1oz and I'm sure we used them for at least 3 or 4 weeks. I found them absolutely fine and easier to put on than Pampers as they're a snugger fit. I'm currently using Tesco's size 3. They are just as good as Pampers for night time - I don't change DS at all in the night unless he poos and I've never had any leaks. Tescos are not as good in the daytime, however, as they tend to leak out of the top when DS is wriggling around.

FYI I absolutely hated the Pampers BabyDry nappies when I tried them recently - they leaked all over the place - but found the Pampers New Baby ones quite good. But not good enough to justify paying the extra for them once my money off coupons ran out!

misdee · 29/10/2006 18:08

oh the tesco newborn nappies are fine. not leaky at all. and cheap enough to do loads of nappy changes. the next size up are twice the price though lol. i got stock of these with dd3 for the first few weeks. then went into washables.

twinklemegan · 29/10/2006 18:10

Meant to say as well that I find the snugger fit of Tescos better than Pampers at retaining soft poo.

evilstepmom · 29/10/2006 19:24

reusable-wise - i am a big terries advocate, v cheap and longlasting and v easy to use. honestly!!

munz · 29/10/2006 19:30

I used the tescos NB on my soon (got 2 packs) and as a NB they didn't hold his explosive poos! lol. huggies made his bum sore and didn't seem to hold as much pee pampers by far the best for our boy. going to try the tesco's now he's older

Difers · 29/10/2006 19:46

Re-useables are cheaper in the long run. After the initial outlay there is nothing to buy. I use totsbots size 2 (20 of them) and 4 wraps with washable fleece liners. Have a few boosters for nights. They fitted DS from birth but he was quite a big baby. www.totsbots.co.uk. You wash em every other day and just chuck em in a pail with a lid. You DON'T use fabric conditioner with them. I also use 10cm Terry Squares and water to wipe DS bum which means I've only ever bought one pack of disposble wipes. No leaks, no nappy rash, happy cheap baby. Also check out e-bay but make sure you are not overpaying for them. Also check out the ecomums forum on www.bounty.com for loads of nappy advice from other cloth loving mums. Some might be selling theirs. Good luck with the new baby.

sallymadge · 29/10/2006 19:52

Are totsbots size 2 suitable for a newborn? how long is that size likely to last? not sure which to invest in but they are certainly the cutest looking!

OP posts:
sallymadge · 29/10/2006 19:53

what's the difference between the wraps and the totsbots?

OP posts:
Difers · 29/10/2006 20:00

Well, DS was 8lbs 2oz when he was born and we started using them as soon as we got them from the the supplier. (www.peachycheeks.co.uk)from about 3-4 weeks old. He's nearly 10 months now and they are still fine. He is just growing out of the size 1 wraps we bought. They are very cute indeed.

misdee · 29/10/2006 20:03

dd3 is still in size 2 tots at 20months old. she is now 22lb. is in m/l wraps now.

we started off with lots of different nappies this time, but rel;ly tots are the best for us. we used motherease one size nappies during the day, and tots bots when out for the afternoon when she is napping, and at night. best wraps for us have been the motherease airflow wraps.

i bought 6 large wraps when they had them reduced in ocado, so dont need to worry when she outgrows these.
