Have bought 4 packs of tecos own new born nappies for my yet to be born first child, at only £1.64 a pack of 24. Are cheap nappies any good or are they likely to leak everywhere?

Hello all,

I've just bought 4 packs of tescos own brand newborn nappies at only £1.64 a pack for my soon to be born first child as we are quite poor. Are these cheaper nappies as effective as the more expensive brands or are they likely to leak eveerywhere. Also I'am planning on using the reusable nappies & wondered if the birth to toddler ones are eny good so I don't end up having to spend too much. I'll be grateful for any advice.

The totsbots nappies are the fabric nappy and you change this at every nappy change along with the liner, they need a wrap over the top of them, either a fleece or polyurethne one, you only change the wrap once a day. The fleece ones are great for the night and the poly ones in the day.

Do you think the size 2 will last until he's a toddler or will you need to invest in some size 3's?

i wouldnt buy size 3's until you need them.

dd2 was in them at 10months old (she was around 30lb at that point), but dd3 isnt anywhere near needing them.

I'm hoping that I won't have to buy size 3's and that these will last until he's out of nappies.

So how many tots bots size 2 nappies & how many mother ease wraps would you recommend that I invest in & how much do you reckon they will cost all together?

I have 15 nappies, which I have to wash everyday, but then I have 2 in them. Before DS2 was born, I could get away with washing them everyday. I would get 4 wraps. You could probably manage 3 at a push. However, with the small ME airflow, I'd buy 2nd hand as they are only in them for 5 mins.

Like I said ealier, my set up was £139 and that was for 4 ME wraps, 15 Bumble nappies (which are fab, btw) and a nappy bucket. I cut up an old fleece blanket for the liners (which you'll need, as it makes poo easier to deal with)

OMG, those reusables are SOO expensive. I would definitely recommend terries with a good wrap and nappy nippas - far more economical and quicker to dry. Don't be put off by folding them, it's dead easy.

misdee · 29/10/2006 20:54

i love the jo fold for terries. i would use that for a newborn.

My MW showed me a great fold for newborns. I'd seen a picture of it and it looks complicated but easy when you know how. Known as the triple absorbent/origami fold.

I tried most disp for my DS and found that for him tesco were as good as any other, esp when he got into the flexable ones like pampers active fit.

Everyone seems to get on better with different ones so I found it best to try different sorts til you find the best for you.

Now my son is 15months and I have another on the way in Jan, I decided that we just couldnt afford two in nappies (worked out that it would be costing us £60+ per month!). We have invested in washable ones and I wish I had done it earlier because it is so easy and only a little more work that disp.

I use wambamboos (which are lovely and my fav but take a while to dry) and terry squareswhich are just as easy but very quick to dry both with nappy nippas. Also motherease airflow wraps and fleece liners.
