How to dress my fat baby?

My baby is really fat. Really really fat. She weighed 7.5 kg at 4 months (over the 91st centile line) and now 2 weeks later looks even heavier. She is quite long but also very fat, with soft pot belly and two fat folds per half-limb.

Every day I dress her in a 6-9 month vest and sleepsuit. But I'd like to dress her in something more interesting. When we go out, she looks like a 9-month old, so people wonder why is she in a sleepsuit all the time?? Problem is, it's a bit of a struggle getting tights, leggings and trousers over her fat thighs and big bottom. It's possible, but faffy, especially as she needs her nappy changed a lot due to frequent breastfed liquidy poo explosions and a copious appetite. Dresses are OK, but I don't want to leave her legs bare in this cold weather.

Any ideas for alternative clothing?

Any brands that are good for really really fat babies?

She is so delicious.

I have had fat babies. 1 fat DD, I found tesco bigger sized tights aren't usually too long (if they are stretched wide instead with chubby legs) and fit ok and comfortable. Then tunics over - are looser than t shirts or jumpers. Easy to get to nappy.
Trousers were a problem until aged about 2!

She's gorgeous! DS is over 10kg at 4.5 months and on the 99.6th centile. He's utterly HUGE!! He is in proportion but has a massive tummy and thighs, like a sumo wrestler.

I put him in tights (H&M) or leggings as even 12-18 month trousers are far too tight on his tummy. I'm just buying him 18-24 month dungarees, which seems ridiculous.

I do take him out in sleepsuits as they're comfy. I have a dislike for putting young babies in grown up clothing anyway, they should be comfortable as a priority!

I feel like I'm finally not alone in this fat-baby group. Usually I'm left feeling embarrassed and guilty as all the other babies I meet are tiny and struggling to put on weight.

Harem pants
Tights
Up sized leggings

Team with dresses or tunic tops, little body warmer gilets are nice.

nilbyname · 10/03/2015 22:23

Also your baby is just heavenly!

ninetynineonehundred · 10/03/2015 22:25

Yay! A fat babies are gorgeous thread Grin
Mine has been on the 98% since just after birth. A squidgy hunk of deliciousness. Her bum wobbles when she does naked running (15 mths)

Sleep suits all the way imo. They are the most comfortable thing for them at this age.

Loving that smile op

Sooo cute! Asda children's clothes are made by same factory as next clothes allegedly but tons cheaper. My fat baby has always worn leggings & vest & carry or jumper. Knitted dresses & tights are good too.

Hypotenuse · 10/03/2015 22:39

Ahh lovely baby! I totally understand feeling guilty and uncomfortable with friends worried about their skinny babies, my dd is over the 99.6th centile and has been since birth. She's 3 months and I worry people wonder why the giant baby is in babygros and doesn't seem to move much. Confused

Dungarees work for us. Not too keen on clothes from Next, they seem to shrink in the wash. Sainsbury's clothes are big and stay big!

ElleDubloo · 10/03/2015 22:48

I'm loving this thread! So many great tips and compliments for DD :)

I want to see photos of other fat babies though! :)

My kids are adults. I am way past the baby-making stage. But that is one gorgeous tot and I think she has just made my ovaries jump start after all these years!

Cottage is either a nutter, or completely misunderstood your op!

Try Toby Tiger clothes. They're lovely and soft but not sure how sizing would work out for you.

ThatCuckingFat · 10/03/2015 22:53

Oh she is just lovely :) she will 'run it off' as my nana always used to say :)
Zara have lovely clothes and are my favourite but they seem to make them for petite babies. My little chunk has to go up a size. Their leggings are great though as they seem really comfy and stretchy. People bought him jeans but he normally can't get anywhere near them! Mothercare stuff is massive.
Enjoy her she is adorable.

I love fat babies! Both of mine were enormous.

lemonpoppyseed · 11/03/2015 00:29

I have one of these too. She weighed in at 21lbs at six months, and I'm bracing myself for her upcoming nine month weigh-in. She wears age 18-24 month leggings (we have the same over the thigh problem), but spends most of her time in sleepsuits. Comfy for her, easy access for me and super cute. She'll be staying in these until we switch to summer clothes, when I think she'll be going into proper outfits. Lovely picture, BTW!

(I also have a DS who was long and skinny and consistently underweight for his age. This chunky baby thing is all new to me. I fed them both in the same way, and sometimes wonder how we ended up with two such different DCs Grin)

ApplesTheHare · 11/03/2015 09:24

OH MY GOODNESS your baby is ADORABLE!!!!!!

That is all :D

SparklyReindeerShit · 11/03/2015 09:33

I know this is tongue in cheek but my baby is much (much) bigger than yours and I'm feeling very Sad that you referred to yours as 'really really really fat'.
So my beautiful little girl must be gigantic.
It makes me really sad people must look at her and think she's a huge monster of a baby Sad

MyRolyPolyBaby · 11/03/2015 09:39

Checking name change....

MyRolyPolyBaby · 11/03/2015 09:42

Loving big baby rolls!
Op your baby is so cute! I love not worrying about 'breaking' a rolypoly baby. Mine wears a lot of sleep suits too but we manage in leggings, tights and tops. Tbh I'd never thought about it!

slicedfinger · 11/03/2015 09:47

Those M&S outfits are utterly gorgeous (as is your DD). (No help at all, just giving a virtual squidge.)

Buglife · 11/03/2015 12:13

But most people don't use the word fat pejoratively with babies Sparkly, I don't think the OP was, she's just explaing her baby is and therefore clothes fitting is a problem. I've had numerous people call DS a 'bruiser' and a 'monster' becuase he's large, but I've never thought they meant that was a bad thing! I'm sure no one is looking at your lovely fat baby and thinking anything other than 'OMG squishy'. Your baby girl can be both beautiful AND gigantic!
