How to dress my fat baby?

ElleDubloo · 10/03/2015 14:05

My baby is really fat. Really really fat. She weighed 7.5 kg at 4 months (over the 91st centile line) and now 2 weeks later looks even heavier. She is quite long but also very fat, with soft pot belly and two fat folds per half-limb.

Every day I dress her in a 6-9 month vest and sleepsuit. But I'd like to dress her in something more interesting. When we go out, she looks like a 9-month old, so people wonder why is she in a sleepsuit all the time?? Problem is, it's a bit of a struggle getting tights, leggings and trousers over her fat thighs and big bottom. It's possible, but faffy, especially as she needs her nappy changed a lot due to frequent breastfed liquidy poo explosions and a copious appetite. Dresses are OK, but I don't want to leave her legs bare in this cold weather.

Any ideas for alternative clothing?

Any brands that are good for really really fat babies?

Smile

Definitely look at Frugi, they are lovely clothes for babies with cloth nappies, so are bigger - esp round the bottom.

My very beautiful baby was the same, she's more 'normal sized' now a 18 months, but until v recently she was huge - esp before she started crawling - at 6 months she had to go into size 3 cloth nappies (designed for 35lb+) because her little chubby thighs were so big that the size 2 wouldn't fit round them anymore! And her measurements (bar height) put her in the size range for 18-24 months!

Liondemer · 10/03/2015 14:29

She's gorgeous! I find h&m quite big. I'd go with leggings and cardis maybe? Don't really have much advice but wanted go say how adorable she is!

Gah! Smushy, cheeks!!!

She's beautiful OP!

No help in the girls clothes front though although Frugi and (oddly) Sainsburys are very large fitting I find!

DS was a big fatso at this age too, rolls everywhere. He's 15 months now and has slimmed out but he still has adorable chunky thighs- fat babies rule!

melts into a puddle

My DS was just like your DD and on his 2nd birthday he is in baby GAP size 4 toddler looking at toddler 5 within the next 2 months if he keeps going at this rate. DD on the other hand at age 3.5 is the height of a 5 year old with the waist of a 2 year old!

Look at the sizing charts. M&S normally include weight and height ideals on their tags which shows you what sizes you should be buying. Do not go by age. Do consider going up a size from what you need when buying because bigger clothes are easier to get on and off plus they will be in that size within a month normally.

WireCat · 10/03/2015 14:36

She is beautiful! No idea re clothes mine are hulking teens now x

Homeincrisis · 10/03/2015 14:37

My dd was v chubby (95-98th percentile) but looks less chunky now she is moving around.
We have favoured leggings ( one size up) with floaty tops as regular tshirts just seem to ride up. We also use cloth nappies so that requires extra room!
Her stuff comes mostly from next and monsoon (via eBay) - their baby cord cotton dungarees are awesome.

wrapsuperstar · 10/03/2015 14:40

What an adorable, cuddly, gorgeous baby!

I thought my baby was fat but we had her weighed and measured yesterday and she's 25th centile for length and weight at 9 months so I suppose not enormous at all! Still lots of squishy bits and the most kissable fat cheeks though.

Harem pants are great, saw some in John Lewis yesterday and not only do they accommodate a chunky baby, they're also great for cloth nappy users (we are). Frugi is also a good suggestion.

My DD wears leggings, tunics, cardigans, that sort of thing. Legwarmers are also super handy when we're out and about as she doesn't have a pushchair, only a sling. And the legwarmers she has would fit me, so definitely plenty of room for a chunky baby leg!

Sootgremlin · 10/03/2015 15:01

I had 2 fat babies, soft dungarees all the way. Boots did good ones, as did Sainsbury's.

My dd had tops and stretchy leggings at 4 months as found them cooler than babygros in the warmer weather. Next do great leggings for girls as they have a lot of stretch in them - managed to wrestle them over her thighs at 6 months with bottoms turned up and the waistband under her armpits, they still fit her nicely now at 14 months. The knees are adorably worn out though Grin

She is 98th centile and 100% chubby beauty.

Your dd is lovely. I doubt anyone who looks at her sees what she is wearing, not with those cheeks Smile

GingerCuddleMonster · 10/03/2015 15:12

Shock that is a bloody adorable baby I just want to cuddle her!!

I have no clothes suggestions DS is tiny.

Rosieliveson · 10/03/2015 15:21

My DS was a little chubster Grin
I dressed him in vests and soft dungarees most of the time. He always looked so cute (biased much?!) anything with a waistband just looked uncomfy.
Congrats on your baby girl too.

squizita · 10/03/2015 16:37

Tesco seem to come up "big" with loads of stretch.

My dd is teenie but I agree about tights. I do ra ra type skirts and dresses over leggings or trousers. I still see 7 to 9 month kids at groups in grows, so I wouldn't worry about that!

I also bought a frilly skirt from next to wear over a grow that poppers at the bottom (not down the front) so it looks like a top, skirt and leggings.

juneybean · 10/03/2015 16:39

oh my god! she is so gorgeous! just want to smush her!

eastmidswarwicknightnanny · 10/03/2015 16:39

My 15week old is 7.75kg and in 3-6mths clothes and dress him in long sleeve vests with dungarees mostly occasionally some all in one outfits and tops and trousers. Since newborn he has only worn sleepsuits for bed and clothes during day.

squizita · 10/03/2015 16:41

Cottage Erm it's a legit question ... babies hate over tight waist bands and tights are hard to get on some.

Just as if I asked about grows for my long/big footed baby I wouldn't be calling her the BFG. Her toes hit the end of most brands before she fills the top and its uncomfortable for her.

ffallada · 10/03/2015 18:02

I have a 91st centile baby and found boots clothing to be oddly sized (ok length but small head holes)
Asda, J Lewis and Next seem to be reasonably sized
Jo Jo Maman Bebe seem made for larger babies
M&co were too oddly shaped for my baby - or my baby is too oddly shaped for their clothes. Was given quite a lot of these and couldn't use them.

Your baby is beautiful - enjoy

OatcakeCravings · 10/03/2015 18:08

My DS was on the 98th centile when he was little, I found Next and George at Asda fitted.

Buglife · 10/03/2015 20:32

It's hard when they have larger bits! My DS has fat thighs and a long body, so his vests are tight and too short on the legs but fine on the top. And they do hate being squeezed into tight bottoms! Gorgeous baby girl :) Can you size up in some things and roll up sleeves and legs a wee bit until she lengthens to match? And loose dresses over leggings would be good. Mine is 91st centile and I just go vest with boys tights or leggings and a top, cardy or little jumper if cold.

Lozzapops · 10/03/2015 21:09

My daughter was a roly poly pudding too, if you think your daughter has fat arms, think again! My little one looked like she had elastic bands tied all up her arms she had so many rolls! People used to comment all the time on how lovely she was! She has slimmed down a lot now she is 16 months, but still a chubber!

I find Next comes up large, and frugi very large. An outfit I particularly liked at that age (and still like actually) is a jersey material basic tunic dress from Next, they are £6 each or 2 for £10, they come in an assortment of colours and patterns. Then get a pair of leggings in a size that fits her comfortably - don't worry about what size is on the label! This paired with a little cardi will look super cute!

Lozzapops · 10/03/2015 21:13

Ps. Your daughter is gorgeous, very munchable!

Yoruba · 10/03/2015 21:27

H&m have got some lovely jeans in at the mo. Really stretchy and comfy! It's so unusual to find comfortable jeans for fat babies I've been telling all the other fellow mums of chubbers :o

I think you've actually got it easier having a girl as you can do dresses with leggings! My Ds has outgrown most brands stretchy dungarees as they only seem to do them in small sizes.

I find jo jo maman and Polarn good for roomy trousers. Gap and next are the worst for dinky waists and too tight fabrics. I put my Ds in the extra thick tights from jo jo as trousers and they look really funky - there's a cow print design! Also I quite like those woolen or cotton all in ones that aren't sleepsuits iykwim - they're usually footless and a bit more "like clothes"

Highlove · 10/03/2015 21:59

I find mothercare stuff huge. Also, randomly, I've found all of the French brands are giant. Maybe try Vertbaudet? The French obviously make little fatties Grin

BlueThursday · 10/03/2015 22:02

Keep making babies because you make beautiful ones Smile

ProcessYellowC · 10/03/2015 22:04

DS had a huge fat bum with reusable nappies, so the solution that I found was shorts for toddlers made good "trousers" - coupled with long socks perfect!

yummy baby btw!

Finola1step · 10/03/2015 22:11

I have nowt to say about clothes.

But your baby is adorable. And that is coming from someone who is kind of "over" babies. Simply adorable.
