When can I go out with my newborn?

I always thought it was after the 6 week check but lots of groups etc have said they welcome babies from any age.

Yes, go out as soon as you feel like it.

Nolim · 01/03/2015 12:04

Yes baby groups for pre walkers accept even the tiniest babies.

And there are also parks and just running erands with mum.

Whenever you feel like it!

Whenever you're ready. No time scale.
Congratulations by the way!

The only group I went to that asked to wait for the 6week check was baby yoga and I think that was to make sure I was ok to exercise rather than the baby. Most groups are fine from birth. Go and enjoy yourselves!

MagicAlwaysLeadsToTrouble · 01/03/2015 12:06

As soon as you like!

My second baby was taken to toddler groups/music groups/soft play from 2 weeks old. Basically as soon as my DH had gone back to work and I had to stop watching telly all day!

Though as this is your first I wouldn't rush out, go when you feel ready! I did a lot of sitting in coffee shops with my NCT friends when my first was a newborn.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 01/03/2015 12:07

We had lunch in the pub when she was 24 hours old! Started taking her to a breastfeeding cafe at 6 days. Whenever you feel ready is fine.

NerrSnerr · 01/03/2015 12:09

I went to my first baby groups at 2 weeks when my husband went back to work.

JuniperTisane · 01/03/2015 12:10

There are plenty of mums on the school run with days old babies in prams. Its fine.

douchbag · 01/03/2015 12:15

My dd2 was in toys r us at 12hrs old!

BertieBotts · 01/03/2015 12:22

I think I took DS to the breastfeeding specialist at 4 days old Blush she worked alongside the NCT "Bumps and babies" group so everyone was very impressed. I was too knackered to go into the group, though.

DS slept through the entire consultation and I ended up coming out without any advice :(

VodkaKnockers · 01/03/2015 12:27

I was out Christmas shopping with DS2 when he was 5 days old.

As soon as you feel able to go out, you should go. I would have went mad staying at home for 6wks

mugglewompster · 01/03/2015 12:28

4 days old for DC1, 12 hours for DC2 but 7 days for DC3 as it was freezing and I thought that was a perfect reason for Dh to take the older ones out while I snuggled up with newborn.

Fortunately no big health issues.

mugglewompster · 01/03/2015 12:28

I've never heard the 6 week thing.

AliMonkey · 01/03/2015 12:36

I would have gone mad keeping them at home for six weeks. Stay at home if you want to but if not go out and do whatever you need or want to do with baby in tow. At this stage any baby groups are for you as baby won't care where they are as long as they are being cared for.

ShadowsShadowsEverywhere · 01/03/2015 12:41

With DC2 I had to go out 3 days PP ... There is no 6 week rule. You have a 6 week check at the doctors to make sure stitches are healed etc but that has no bearing on when you can go out and about

spiderlight · 01/03/2015 12:44

Mine was out walking the dogs at four days!

Buglife · 01/03/2015 13:27

I went out for a walk and coffee with 5 day old DS and DH, the 5 days had felt like forever and I needed to get out! I had friends who brought the baby home from hospital, sat thinking 'can't be bothered to cook' so popped round the corner to have lunch.

MrsBojingles · 01/03/2015 14:38

We went out for coffee when DD was 5 days old, got lots of coos from lovely old ladies, we loved it!

MrsCK · 01/03/2015 15:20

Fab thank you!

My MW encouraged me to go out as soon as possible: I was very anxious and being indoors can make it worse.
I went for short walk after 5 days, and to my first group at 2 weeks (a playgroup with breastfeeding support).

rallytog1 · 01/03/2015 20:35

Just on the other side of the coin - obviously you can go out as soon as you want, but equally don't feel under pressure to do so if you don't feel ready. The only 'right' time is when it's right for you.

Whammy · 02/03/2015 03:53

I didn't venture out for 10 or so days with DS1. I had DP and my mum looking after me and I remember it being a lovely chilled time. Whatever works for you.

PinkyAndTheBump · 02/03/2015 04:28

Out first excursion was 4d pp and although it was quite short, it left me exhausted. Adrenaline was flowing! Got easier after that but needed to make sure I was well fed before we went out.

Salene · 02/03/2015 05:14

I was out walking my dogs less than 24 hours after having my baby & visiting friends
