hi does anyone know if the ice is still used by emergency services? do people still have it in their phone, how about if phone has screen lock? just seen a seatbelt cover with kids ice details called icebelt wondering if I should buy it, i have a tag for my son who is diabetic but it doesn't have next of kin on it, this ice seatbelt pad does, how would ambulances know my son was diabetic if I had a crash or who to contact if I was out cold? any thoughts?

Well, I have it in my phone, as do all my family and many of my friends, so I guess it would certainly be an option that emergency services would look for, alongside 'Mum' I expect.
No idea about the lock - my phone doesn't have one.

Apologies for double post!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 18/02/2015 19:27

If he would wear them youcan get ID wristbands custom made with all the details on here, my DH and DF have non engraved ones with their medical conditions on.

If you have an iPhone with Siri, simply save the relevant persons name with ice at the end. The emergency services will activate Siri and say 'call ice'. DP is saved as xxxx ice and it calls him.

ohhhhpieceofcandy · 18/02/2015 19:28

I have have a Samsung S3 mini and it has ICE contacts that can be accessed without unlocking the phone. Unfortunately my parents have had a few random calls when my one year old has got hold of my phone!

0ddsocks · 18/02/2015 19:28

iPhones also have support for this built in so an ICE contact number can be accessed without unlocking the phone, how to set it up: www.forbes.com/sites/markrogowsky/2014/09/22/theres-a-feature-in-ios-8-that-could-save-your-life-yes-really/

So is anyone here actually in the emergency services and, if so, do they actually use ICE? Or is it just a gimmick?

Sophieelmer · 18/02/2015 19:50

I had it in my old phone and haven't done it again because I forgot! Is it actually worth it though, will emergency services really use it?

BlueThursday · 18/02/2015 19:59

I think they'd be likely to check personal affects such as an address on a driving licence, or if in a car the registered address

TallulahTwinkletoes · 18/02/2015 20:34

In an emergency, you think they will have the time to look at a driving licence and toddle to the address or call the dvla if in a car? No they'll grab the phone and search for ice.

I don't work for emergency services but I'm certain it's used and not a gimmick.

UniS · 18/02/2015 20:43

Previous phone I had my ICE number on teh locked screen display. must try and sort that out on my current phone.

UniS · 18/02/2015 20:46

Done, that was simple. in the setting menu on my motoG there was an option to add owner info to the lock screen.

BlueThursday · 18/02/2015 21:06

The police don't go to the DVLA it's on the PNC

TallulahTwinkletoes · 18/02/2015 22:49

Is it? And that's accessible to all police? Still means trotting over to the house when unnecessary tho. The issue is if they're allowed to access/use the phones. I don't think it's promoted widely enough but then I am a massive worrier. (Watch a lot of dramatic American tv and my mind runs away with itself.)

HarrietSchulenberg · 18/02/2015 22:58

Apparently, the LAPD say this about ICE:

"We tell people: Add ICE to your cell phone only after you've affixed similar information to (or near) the official photo identification you routinely carry in your wallet.Â

Why?Â

With so many types and brands of wireless phones, it can take precious minutes to learn how to access a phone's directory. Many wireless devices are also found to be locked, damaged or have discharged batteries following an incident, rendering ICE unusable.Â

Please do encourage your interested friends and colleagues to make an ICE entry in their cell phone, especially if it will give them peace of mind â?? but not at the expense of written emergency contact and medical information."

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 18/02/2015 23:26

I don't carry photo ID, in fact a lot of the time my keys and phone are all I take out with me, so the phone would be the only way of IDing me. I certainly don't want to add any ID to my keyring. I might put the ICE info in my purse though.

BackforGood · 18/02/2015 23:34

Like Who - I wouldn't have any photo ID or written ID on me most of the time. If I've got my purse I'd have credit card with my name on, but nothing else to give any clues, and sometimes I just put money in a small purse or my pocket.
I'll almost always have my phone with me though.
Even if you are in your car when it's needed, your car registration would only identify you, not who they should be contacting as your next of kin.

TallulahTwinkletoes · 19/02/2015 06:29

I thought everyone basically had samsung or iPhone nowadays Wink

I too never take anything more than bank card, keys and phone. Grin

SoupDragon · 19/02/2015 06:36

No they won't. If anything they'll just look in the contact list.
