Teething poos have burnt skin on my baby's bum. What's the best cream?

Title, says it all really. I've never managed to find creams that heal the skin properly. I use barrier creams, but each time she poos it just keeps burning in to the skin. What can I use to heal the skin?

metanium, you can get its from chemist, its horrible yellow thick sticky stuff that smells rough (and doesnt come off well with cotton woll and water but wipes work well!) but it works really well, used to clear dds bum up in 24 hrs and she would look like id poured boiling hot water over her bum when she was teething!

hope this helps!

Nappy rash - help!! (17 messages)

have a look at this thread going on yesterday under Nappies,Potty Training. (how do i do the link?)
definitely another vote for metanium
but also go for fresh air - those teething poos are acidic.
it does pass though, i found it the most horrific time - feel for you.

Flamebat · 23/10/2006 08:56

Drapolene is great for burns - nappy and normal.

Bath with cotton wool and a strong solution ofcooled chammomile tea rather than harse wipes, and yet another vote for metanium, plus as much fresh air as possible.

NothingButAttitudeOnMN · 23/10/2006 09:33

We had this last week with DS, the best thing to do is give about 1hr nappy free time each day and slap savlon on with every nappy. DS's cleared up staraight away.

throckenholt · 23/10/2006 09:36

drapolene or normal savlon - and lots of air time.

MrsWaggsnapps · 23/10/2006 13:29

soak a hankie or thin flannel in cool, strong chamomile tea and wring it out gently, then put this inside the nappy against her skin - leave for as long as possible (this works wonders overnight and you can do it with both cloth and disposables)

Dunno if you've tried this, but everytime ds2 gets bad nappy rash, my mum recommends (the old wives tale) egg whites and surprise surprise, it actually works every time

kittythescarygoblin · 23/10/2006 17:05

I guess it acts as a barrier

metanium gets my vote too. Bepanthen seemed to actually burn ds's skin

Bucketsofbloodydinosaurs · 23/10/2006 21:10

Soak washable wipes in water with half a capful of Oilatum bath oil and change her nappy every 2-3hrs in the daytime.
If she's little enough not to be creeping about, leave her on a playmat (on some newspaper) with no nappy on as much as you can.

CalistaMyers · 23/10/2006 21:12

Metanium worked wonders on both my ds's in situations like that.

CaptainCaveman · 23/10/2006 21:13

Metanium is fabulous

kittythescarygoblin · 23/10/2006 21:20

Thanks for all the ideas everyone. The real, real problem I am having at the moment is that these disgusting burny poos are coming so frequently that her poor bottom barely has time to recover, and the creams time to work before they are covered in acid again. Of course it is agony for her to have her bottom cleaned.
One of my son's today saw her have these runs whilst I was letting her bottom 'breathe' and he described it very acurately as " being sick out of her bottom'!! Poor love

Ah, so it's not just my daughter who has this problem. I thought I was a bad mother for allowing the nappy rash to happen. What is in this Metanium, it sounds hideous! My wee girl has a sore on her bottom which has been there a week or so and hasn't healed up. She got it from a teething poo.

CaptainCaveman · 23/10/2006 21:31

not entirely sure but it is available over the counter.
Am a District Nurse and the nubmer of patients who use it on themselves and then heal is incredible!

twickersmum · 23/10/2006 21:36

my dd1 suffered with those acidic burning poos, it does pass quite quickly you'll be pleased to hear.
i sat her in a bumbo chair (which i then used to wash in the dishwasher...) and just left the nappy off nearly all the time (floor covered in towels and pampers bed mats). grim and messy but it was the only thing that worked.
as for wiping/touching her bum - i couldn't without her screaming, so i just used to wash her down with the shower.
I really feel for you, it was the most upsetting time. If it gets much worse, (like nearly bleeding) then do go to the doctor as they can give you a cream which works really fast (timodene i think... but it is steroid i think so use sparingly/last resort).

Drapolene has sorted us recently when metanium wasn't doing the trick for once, my failsafe metainum let us down have also used Vasogen too, when things not quite so bad.

mumandlovingit · 23/10/2006 22:13

my eldest boy had the same skin problem but it was from where he was bum shuffling on the floor.the doctor gave him fucidin cream and it worked well.

his bum literally looked like he's been burnt.drapolene is also good for when it's healed slightly.i swear by it.

i still use drapolene for different things now & i wouldnt be without it.

if i were you id take the child to the doctor if it keeps doing it.just to be on the safe side.

kittythescarygoblin · 23/10/2006 22:25

Oh, I've got some fucidin, I'll try that. The skin is raw and bleeding
I'll look up the booty balm too

kittythescarygoblin · 23/10/2006 22:25

I'd go for fresh air and camomile tea. It worked wonders on my DD. Soak a cloth in the cam tea and leave it damp in her nappy as long as possible. It will cool her little bottom while it heals. You can also make up a solution of cam.tea, lavender and a carrier oil (eg almond)to use to clean her. i'd avoid wipes if u can - they really sting! I'm not usually into 'alternative' treatments but worked so well i thought i'd share it. Hope your LO's comfy again soon.
