Newborn not pooing

Ds2 is 7 days old, his last poo was on day 3 IIRC. It was a mega-poo, with the meconium starting to change colour, and some yellow streaks. He's had plenty of wees. He's breastfed, and I know that bfd babies can go for days between poos, but I've never heard of this happening in such a young baby before he's got rid of all the meconium.

Any experiences?

Oh and I just remembered. My midwife always used to say that babies get 'allergic to the world' when they get to week 2. So maybe that's what the rash is, getting used to the non-sterile environment that is the world.

mears · 27/10/2006 11:48

Hi PrettyCandles - guess what I agree with Tiktok

The skin rash you mention is not uncommon however sometimes babies do need antibiotic treatment for it. Are you bathing him in water only? Sometimes it is caused by the use of bath/shampoo products.

I agree about leaving him to see when he will wake for a feed. If he gets to 6 hours waken him up!

It may well be that he will wake after 4 and feed really well. I agree it can be harder to jog a sleepy disinterested baby along.

How are your nipples BTW? Has he pooed at all since he passed meconium?

PrettyCandles · 27/10/2006 12:21

Left to schedule himself he seems to be waking to feed at roughly 3-h intervals, less if he doesn't manage to get to sleep. He ius surprisingly easily over-stimulated (I'm surprised because my other 2 were not) and will only fall ssleep in either my or dh's arms.

Last night he slept 6h, and even so doized off after the feed and slept another 2h.

We've hgad a couple of greeny-yellow skid-marks in the nsappy since the formula came through on Tuesday.

Today I'm in bed with ds2 (apart from this brief MNing).

Nipples are fine.

We only bath him in water, nothi ng else. Though when he bathed with me I put oats or cornfliur in the water. Last night he spent nearly an hour feeding in the bath, and his skin was much better after that.

We had a similar rash and HV (yep - have a good 'un ) suggested it was the fabric conditioner - even though we use Comfort Pure.

Stopped using it on DD clothes/bedding etc and the rash cleared up. Just use Fairy tablets now.

tiktok · 27/10/2006 18:40

PC, honestly, I think your baby sounds fine, and the feeding sounds fine, and things will work out

Glad mears agrees with me.

Did you splutter at the idea of baby failing to flush out 'toxins', mears??!

Honestly.....do they make this stuff up?

mears · 27/10/2006 18:44

LRWG - fabric softener and biological washing powders are often the source of the problem as you suggested.

Tiktok - I was hoping PC would have a switched on HV and she would give reassurance. Toxin theory is a bit OTT.

I really believe things will improve and that he is just not much of a 'shitter'

tortoiseshell · 27/10/2006 18:46

PC - sounds like you've turned the corner with him - well done you! Agree the idea of flushing out toxins is a bit bizarre. My HV suggested the white behind a friends' dd's ears was thrush(!) and she should rub some natural yoghurt on it...it was dried milk.

Waking every 3 hours is perfect I think - gives you a bit of space too, but ideal timings to feeds.

Well done! xxx

PrettyCandles · 27/10/2006 20:49

Gosh I wish I had you guys on the sofa next to me! You all sound so much more confident than I feel.

I'm reassuring myself with the fact that we've had at least 4 decently soggy nappies today.

I'm pretty sure that the rash was made worse by heat, or is even an exaggerated heatrash, as I made dh sleep in clothes last night so that he would be too warm to use the duvet. As a result ds2 didn't keep getting covered up, was cooler, and the rash didn't flare up again. In any case, we don't use fabric conditioner and do use Fairy non-bio.

I don't mind him being a storer-and-blaster (I'll just have to bear it in mind when on outings ), but the poor lovey is so obviously uncomfortable in his gut.

I think I'll be more at ease when ds2 is less distressed, feeds more consistently and settles better between feeds.

Hi PC - how has today gone?

PrettyCandles · 29/10/2006 20:24

Things are going - normally!

We've had poo (still a bit khaki, but getting yellower), we've had wee, we've had sleep (all of us), we've had lots of eye-contact. We've had good strong suckling. We've had normality.

I really think we've cracked it. Thank you so very very much.

My one remaining concern is his skin colour, but as everything else is going so well, and as my skin colour matches his fairly well, I suspect that he's just swarthy.

fantastic post PC! I'm so happy to read that. I hope you can really start to enjoy him now - I do so know what a rocky beginning feels like, and I'm so pleased you've got over this. It's so hard with a big baby isn't it.

Anyway, enjoy your little one! xxx

tiktok · 30/10/2006 11:00

That's good news, PC, and not really surprising

PrettyCandles · 09/11/2006 22:52

I think I have discovered the source of the problem (apart from the obvious earlier one of ds2 not getting enough food).

In the week after my last post ds2 had a couple of browny-yellow poos and a lot of tummy-discomfort. Then a bfc mentioned something to the group I was with about being careful when taking vitamin and mineral supplements while bfing, as sometimes the iron component can constipate the baby. Ker-ching! [lightbulb icon]. I get anaemic in prgenancy and lost quite a lot of blood in labour, so have been taking iron supplement. Stopped the iron immediately, and 3 days later ds2 started pooing for England - lovely yellow breastfed poo, plenty of it, and he's pood every day since.

Oh fantastic news! It's great when something clicks like that and makes sense isn't it. Really glad everything's going well for you - I really empathised with you, as you seemed to have had such a similar situation to me, and I remember at the time just wishing I was through that bit and on to the lovely bit, and I hope you're at that lovely bit now! xxx

mears · 09/11/2006 23:03

Glad to hear things have improved now. The only thing now is notto neglect your iron levels - make sure you eat iron rich foods. Have citrus fruit juice with your meals - don't drink tea or coffee with your meals as that inhibits iron asborption. Spatone is a much more palatable supplement without constipating side effects if you are still anaemic. Congratulations on finding a solution. Happy bresatfeeding

All that angst seems like a lifetime ago already, and now I can get on with loving and enjoying my littlest man.

Once again, thanks so much for your help and support.

...Any tips on getting him to sleep?
