Am I mad to be considering a 60point OU course with 2 kids & no DH?

that's it really....... DS is at preschool 5 mornings a week but also have 3month old too, and no Dh around. Am wondering if I can do it by studying in the evenings & giving up my addiction to Corrie and Eastenders......

hmm, tough one - think it would hinge for me on how 'good' the 3mo would be ...getting sleep (or not) makes ALL the difference ime.
No doubt it would be hard going anyhow.
that aside, I'd say go for it. Nothing like getting your brain cells ticking over
Could you get any help at all with your 3mo, thus giving you some time, however little, for study?

amynnixmum · 21/10/2006 12:27

Have you done a 30 point one yet? I found it hard work to fit in a 60 point course round the childrens needs although I did manage it.

frenchconnection · 22/10/2006 07:57

do it! i did a 60pt course every yr for 6 yrs and managed well! hope your 3mth old likes to sleep!!

by the way you dont need to do nearly as many hours as they suggest....take that from a pro!!

another yes vote from here! I have just finished my final exam after six years of one 60pt course every year and although it is hard slog it is more than worth it. Lowest point: sitting exam when dd1 was 7wks old and my norks were soooooo full of milk I was practically leaking all over my papers by the end of the exam!! Nice!

Also, agree with frenchconnection - the suggested number of hours study per week is grossly overestimated - a mad scrabble around TMA cutoff dates and exam times are more than sufficient!

MarsLady · 25/10/2006 00:08

Not mad at all. I've just completed AA306 (Shakespeare:Text and Performance) and I have 5 kids (including 2.8yo DTs). Next year I'm doing 90points.

Go for it! I agree about the mad scramble around TMA and exam time... but you know what....? You'll do it and you'll do it well. Just shout out for support. I'll be the one procrastinating as the TMAs are due!

I would love to do a course buyt I worry that my complete lack of memory and orgainisation would let me down.

Molesworth · 25/10/2006 00:10

Go for it skribble, the OU is fantastic and if you start with a level 1 course, you learn those skills as you go along. Honestly, the OU is the best thing I've done in years!

MarsLady · 25/10/2006 00:10

It didn't let me down Skribble.... go on..... go for it! Do a 30 pointer and see how you feel!

Skribble · 25/10/2006 00:13

I have the chance to do a course (not OU) but home study through work. It is a and HNC, and links with a degree cousre you can go on to do, I dismissed the idea of doing it until I heard who else was going to do it, probably to late now, might e.mail the boss.

MarsLady · 25/10/2006 00:16

Skribble...... email now! What have you got to lose? Go on... we'll be your support team when you get it!

MarsLady · 25/10/2006 18:52

Did you send the email????????????

Skribble · 25/10/2006 22:40

Not yet I wanted to check with DH if it was still availible (he is my line manager), if he says it is I have to e.mail the big boss/ director.

Skribble · 25/10/2006 22:44

Ok vague e.mail sent as DH knows bugger all about it. I know he will get back to me soon. So we will see.

fartmeistergeneral · 25/10/2006 22:49

hijacking slightly. I was thinking of an Openings course as I thought that was all I could manage, but it says 6-8 hrs of study a week!!!

Also, was interested in history or literature, but couldn't find a course to suit. Anyone suggest anything? One of the openings courses was japanese poetry!!!

squidette · 25/10/2006 23:02

not mad.

I too am starting a 60 point course as part of a longer term 'conversion' diploma in Feb - i know the pathway i have chosen will mean that after this 60 point course, i will be lookng at two years with 2x60 each, summer schools and a final year with 90 points.

I am also single mum, work part time and although the children do spend regular overnights and weekend time with their dad i know that i am going to making some big decisions about time management.

I believe i can do it - it will mean giving up other things, but then again, its not 'really' giving up - more of swopping one thing i want to do immediate gratification for another that i want for a longer term satisfaction!

Yes - i also think you can do it. It may be hard, but not impossible.

I did some serious research a few years ago .

Skribble · 25/10/2006 23:42

I have just looked and £680 for a 60pt course, bugger. Scotland and combined income over the limit even though we are in loads of debt so no help there, I will have to see if I can do this course through work.
