Am I mad to be considering a 60point OU course with 2 kids & no DH?

that's it really....... DS is at preschool 5 mornings a week but also have 3month old too, and no Dh around. Am wondering if I can do it by studying in the evenings & giving up my addiction to Corrie and Eastenders......

Well done Floating and Skribble. Now.... have you applied yet?

You can apply online. Don't waste time or you'll convince yourself not to. It's wonderful.

Squidette.... how lovely. Summer school is fab! Take advantage of them if you can because the OU may be phasing them out and they are such an important part of your studies (and I don't just mean the opportunity to indulge yourself in the student lifestyle.... bar, lectures in dark glasses, hangovers and dodgy dancing etc. Never did that at my Summer School ) You get a lot of stuff at summer school in the form of lectures and debates that you just can't in a 2 hour tutorial. The work load is what you make it.

I'm so excited for you all. Don't forget to apply for your NUS Student cards... lots of lovely discounts to be had!

The OU saved my sanity I reckon. Did 60 point course and a summer school last year, and 2 courses (60 + 30) this year. I don't work, children are 5 and 2, do have dh but he works away a lot. I'm not as disciplined as I ought to be and I'm always behind on the study calendar, but I get the TMAs in on time (just barely) and I revise hard for the exam. My friends are great at helping out with the children in the run up to the exam.

I was rather sceptical about it before I started but it has been fantastic.

ANd yes, summer school are WONDERFUL!

Molesworth · 26/10/2006 12:15

Another vote for summer school here - I had an excellent time at Sussex this year!

fartmeistergeneral · 26/10/2006 12:45

what subjects did you all study?

Molesworth · 26/10/2006 12:49

I'm studying social sciences (with sociology and social policy) FMG

Re: the openings courses - go for it, sign up for one. The OU overstate the estimated number of hours p/w needed anyway

fartmeistergeneral · 26/10/2006 12:51

I've always leaned towards arts, eg in my other degree, but wish I had the courage to do something sciency. Crap at science at school, but feel like my brain may work differently now, 20 yrs later!!

MarsLady · 26/10/2006 12:53

fartmeister... then take up a science course. What's the worst that could happen? You hate it so next year you do something else. You could do a 30 pointer and see if you like it.

I've done Literature (adore literature) and this year I'm adding a French module because I never did anything with my school French and would love to now.

Skribble · 26/10/2006 13:38

I am waiting to hear about the course I can do through work but would love to do a course purly for fun, are there any really fun and interesting or unusual courses that might appeal to me that I might not have spotted. There are a whole load of child related ones but I feel like been there done that.

Molesworth · 26/10/2006 13:41

What are your interests skribble?

Skribble · 26/10/2006 13:45

I enjoyed geography at school and did well at technical drawing, I like designing buildings/ rooms etc, not so much interior design but more where walls go . I nearly went off with Ordinance Survey to train as a cartographer when I left school. LOads of stuff really ecology etc. But I worry that sitting studying anything I like will just make it boring.

Molesworth · 26/10/2006 13:50

I'm sure studying something you like will only enhance your enjoyment of the subject!

Have a look at the OU prospectus, or can you get to evening classes?

Skribble · 26/10/2006 13:53

I did an evening class in web design, not the best choice if you want to make new freinds as you all sit glued to screens, not much chance for chit chat. I imagined we would all wander down to the pub after class etc. Not a chance.

Rather do home study as I would end up missing a few classes due to work and its hard to catch up.

I suppose it could enhance it , just have bad memories from school and even college.

I am considering a course now as big boss e.mailed back to say I was on the waiting list as he had loads of names and it doesn't start until next year anyway, don't know if I can afford to do one of my own back.
