Babygrows to 'proper' clothes??

My daughter turned 4 months today and spends most of her life in babygrows as I just think they're much more comfortable for sleeping and playing in.
I'm now considering dressing her in 'proper' clothes during the day. When did you start dressing your babies in 'proper' clothes and why?

I saw my brother and his baby the other day. He is 12 weeks old and probably the most unhappy baby I've seen. He cries pretty much non stop for hours. Not sure why but he is now 19 pounds already.
Anyway, I digress. He was dressed in denim dungarees which were clearly irritating his little chin so I unfastened them to give him room to breathe. Brother didn't like this and said he didn't look smart anymore.
Who cares about a baby looking smart? If you are lying round all day, you want to wear something comfy. Baby gros and jogging bottoms/leggings perhaps are most appropriate at that age.

With my son had him in babygros until 9 months when a guy in the supermarket joked that he was still in his pyjamas. With daughter I started proper clothes at about6 months, but that's because I had so many outfits passed over to me it seemed a shame to waste them.

Think babies look snuggly and comfy in babygrows. I did bring out some clothes for occasions but to be honest for the first few months they looked so uncomfy in " proper" clothes. All of them have grown up to be very smart and fashion conscious so no long lasting effects!

from about day 5 on both children. I had lots of lovely gifts of outfits and I wanted them to be used. However, I think Iwould have dressed them in "clothes" and not babygros even without those gifts. Babygros I only used for nighttime. I too liked to differenciate between day and night time (for me not dc).

Unless we were out and visiting gift-givers, it was probably about 4-5m. Like a PP, once she started sitting up it was nice to see her looking like a little person in a little outfit. Until then, it was, frankly, a pain.

Around 2 months old in soft clothings, he's never worn jeans as I like to think I'm keeping him cosy.
It's easier to change a sicky top then to change a babygrow I think. Ds doesn't like lying down so can do his top as he sits.
Plus it helps to differentiate between night and day.

Clothes for babies under 18 months have only really been around for about 50 years
I have a reproduction catalog from 1897 and they offer children's dresses from 6 months up (boys would switch to trousers at about 3 or 4). Prior to 6 months, they would wear 'slips' (actually dresses) well past the feet, with long skirts, vests, stockings and cardigans for warmth.

My daughter was born in March, when we were still having occasional snow flurries, and she needed to wear several layers to stay warm in our very cold house. Sometimes a baby grow over or under something else, but not because I liked them only because they were convenient and warmish. I would almost always get her dressed to go out.
It was in the mid 30s C by May so when I dressed her at all it would be in a light dress or only a t-shirt and diaper.

As soon as they fit so maybe 6 weeks or so as DS was under 4lb at birth. He has so many pairs of jeans but they are all soft or fleece lined so don't see why that wouldn't be comfy/cosy.

I don't like him to look like he's in his pjs and I have a massive hatred of knitwear (unless it's more modern rather than a cardi your gran would knit) so I don't know what I'd put on over the babygro to keep him warm.

About 7/8 months I think. Had lots of lovely little outfits in 0-3 months and 3-6 months that dd wore once or twice but mostly babygrows at that age. When I have dc2 think I will buy babygrows only until they are 6 months, much more practical, comfy and so cute Smile

The day after sge was born- I wanted to distinguish day from night for all our sakes :-) I also couldn't resist cute outfits!!!

About three months, which was last June. DD was always in babygrows up until then, with a vest underneath. Then it started getting hot, so she was just in a vest, and if it got a bit chilly I'd put some leggings and maybe a cardigan on her. Socks too. Then I started putting t-shirts on, and then dresses, tights jumpers, etc.

Now she's 10mo and hardly ever in a babygrow, although she does wear one as PJs from time to time! I put her in a Tigger babygrow for Halloween and she looked so strange to me... And she has a nice snuggly one I put on over her clothes when it's freezing, like yesterday.
