Babygrows to 'proper' clothes??

My daughter turned 4 months today and spends most of her life in babygrows as I just think they're much more comfortable for sleeping and playing in.
I'm now considering dressing her in 'proper' clothes during the day. When did you start dressing your babies in 'proper' clothes and why?

Mostly when they started crawling, as babygrows then became less practical. They wore "normal" clothes some of the time before them, but babygrows most of the time. Babygrows are much easier and more comfortable IMO.

Ds was in baby grows and a home knit cardi with pram booties until he was about 10 months old. I think proper clothes look so uncomfortable on babies.

dobedobedo · 29/11/2014 20:38

Ds2 is 7 months old and he has proper clothes some days and baby grow days too. Depends on the laundry situation and my mood!

All his proper clothes are soft and comfy though. Leggings and t shirts with cardis for example. We don't bother with jeans or fussy crap Grin

Mine is 9 weeks and I have some proper outfits (trousers and jumper) for visiting etc but we wear grows in the day for home/trips to the shop. I intend to carry on like that till 5 months or so at least.

squizita · 29/11/2014 20:46

"We"!?! I wear normal clothes or my pjs she wears a grow.

Mummyamy123 · 29/11/2014 20:56

Babies look scrummy dressed as babies Smile Once they are no longer comfortable in baby grow ie crawling is plenty time for real clothes xx

WiggleGinger · 29/11/2014 23:11

With my DD it was around 3 weeks and I regretted it later

With dd he is 3 months & he mostly wears gro's but has a few clothes days too.
He's just gone into 3/6 so will be in more clothes from now on as he's starting to look like I haven't bothered to get him dressed ( which isn't the case, as I LOVE gro's!)
But agree with PP no jeans, so its just soft cotton dungarees!

Fedupofplaystation · 12/01/2015 19:26

DD1 was in outfits from day 1. I insisted on a new clean, ironed outfit every morning and often went through a couple of different outfits a day as her nappy leaked. I couldn't understand why everyone else seemed to dress their babies in sleepsuits all day. I saw them as nightwear.

I learnt my lesson.

DD2 is 9 weeks and has worn nothing but babygrows and I can't see that changing anytime soon. I don't understand what I was thinking first time around. I don't even bother to change her out of the sleep suit that she's had on overnight, if I can't be arsed it is not dirty.

Cupcakes123 · 12/01/2015 19:40

DS is 5 months, he only wears babygros to bed now.
He was a tiny little 6lb thing so newborn sized "proper clothes" didn't fit until he was about 6 weeks old but since then he's worn clothes everyday

Booboostoo · 12/01/2015 20:17

Proper clothes look a bit odd on babies for me so it was sleep suits for both DCs. They were also pretty inconvenient, little dresses just ride up all the time, socks fall off, etc. DD was in sleep suits until she started trying to walk and then I got her sleep suits without feet so she would not slip. She only moved onto clothes when she was walking properly. DS is only 4mo so he has a long way to go.

soundsystem · 12/01/2015 22:49

oh gosh, from about.. day 4? Comfy things though like nice soft leggings and tops with snuggly cardigans and the occasional Christmas jumper. Planned to have her in babygros until she started crawling but got given so much cute stuff, and separates are easier if she's pukey/wees on herself as only have to change half :)

HomeIsWhereTheHeartIs · 12/01/2015 22:57

About 6 months, which was when I got sick of people I'm looking at you FIL making pyjama related comments

eastmidswarwicknightnanny · 13/01/2015 04:30

Clothes in day for both from day 3 on being discharge from hospital mostly romper suits n soft dunagree n vest sets

rootypig · 13/01/2015 04:33

DD always had different day and night clothes, it just seemed natural. All was soft and stretchy, but she'd be in bright long sleeved vests and soft little trousers (no buttons or zips, like little yoga pants) in the day, and baby grows at night. They just look like pyjamas to me. Yes I know it is absurd to think a two month old should not be in pjs all the time Grin. I supposed it helped me delineate time. And I bloody hate bloody poppers.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 13/01/2015 05:42

About five months for dd. Then Id put her in a pair of tights with a long sleeved vest buttoned over the top for in the house, and if we went out I just put a dungaree dress or pinafore over the top.

DS is 3mo and only just going into his 0-3 clothes which are all babygrows. I have some proper clothes in 3-6m which he may go into as soon as he fits but its just long sleeved vests and joggers.

Littlef00t · 14/01/2015 19:44

Out of grows at about 3 months as it was a hot summer and it was too difficult to regulate her temp than with leggings, dress, cardi etc.

Still wears them some days At 10mo

ohcluttergotme · 14/01/2015 19:52

I had the nicer Babygro's and really soft clothes such as soft cotton trousers with feet and t shirt for during the day.
I always like to wash, change nappy, freshen up and dress in the morning then wash/bath Jammie's on for night.

Purplehonesty · 14/01/2015 19:52

Like most people until 7/8 months when they started to crawl.
I found baby clothes so uncomfortable looking - all the girls dresses had buttons on the back, for a baby who spends most of the day lying on them!

ohcluttergotme · 14/01/2015 19:53

Oops meant to add from day 3 for my three; 15, 5 & 7 months.

Only1scoop · 14/01/2015 19:56

I bought lovely soft little coordinating sets from the Joules sales. Mainly baby Gro type sets and leggings with little smocks. Never dresses....I always think they look uncomfortable.

NorahBone · 15/01/2015 20:08

The only clothes I bought before the baby was born was a pack each of baby grows and vests. I had no ideas about what a baby wears and as almost all his clothes were bought / donated by other people we dressed him in these - baby grows at night and separate tops/ trousers during the day; never occurred to me to do otherwise.
He's still in baby grows at night, but I don't think they're all that practical- they only fit for a short time and are prone to destruction from either end.

Hopelass · 15/01/2015 20:13

Ds was about 8.5 months. When he started crawling the babygro just dragged behind him if you get what I mean so we progressed to dungarees and then tops and trousers when he was about 10 months. Even now though (15 mo) if we are only going to the park in the day I just zip his snowsuit up over his babygro and take him out like that lazy mum he only goes from the car to his pram and I well wrapped up. Nobody sees so I figure it's ok!

Chottie · 16/01/2015 20:11

Squtternutbaush

Clothes for babies under 18 months have only really been around for about 50 years and I've yet to meet an older person who can't tell day from night

I'm just intrigued to know what you think babies wore over 50 years ago! were they just wrapped up in blankets and towels? I've got lots of family baby photos and everyone is clothed and respectable looking :)

RiverTam · 16/01/2015 20:16

I didn't bother with proper clothes until DD could sit unaided (about 4.5 months) and then it was quite simple stuff and still babygrows most of the time. Didn't bother with dresses until she could walk, no point if you're picking them up all the time, the skirt bit just hoicks up.

I find babies in jeans and the like most odd.

Minesril · 17/01/2015 06:55

Right from the start. I'm another one who wanted to differentiate between night and day, and establish routines early on. So it's baby grows at night and outfits during the day!
