Calling all nappy buffs - urgent advice needed... Bamboozles and having aplix added

Bought tots bots bamboozles (size 2's) back in Feb - non-aplix. Many of you will know there has since been a problem with nippas not working on the bamboozles so now all aplix. Have spoken to tots bots and don't want mine to have aplix added as I just don't feel they fit dd as well as a nippa'd nappy. Also some of the bamboozles I'd bought are slightly smaller than others and this is now showing up as dd is bigger, if this is a further fault not sure that getting the aplix added is going to solve and would rather have proper ones to start with iyswim. Am in the process of returning them to a third party who will then return them to tots bots - life would have been so much simpler if I'd bought them direct .

Anyways, what I'm wandering is, what will I re-place them with? Had the terry tots bots in size 1 and loved them, worked great with nippa etc. Dh really likes the slimmer fit of the bamboozles but I'm just not sure about trying them again. In a quandry as to wether to just buy size 2 terry, try one aplix bamboozle or something else altogether. Dd has a slender middle but chunky thighs and the nippa nappy def makes for better fit on her.

Has anyone out there gone ahead with having aplix added, have they been ok?

Do you think there might be a poss prob getting this all sorted as they've got to be retured to the site I bought them form then on to tots bots?

Sorry this is so long and waffley, really anxious to get sorted adap as want to get back to re-useables (stupid disposable I'm using just now keep leaking).

I had a nippa bamboozle which, like yours, came up slightly short and eventually wouldn't nippa properly. I recently bought some more but went for the applix ones this time and they are a much better fit and taller in the rise I think. I have been really impressed with them and haven't noticed a difference to the nippa ones when putting on ds2 particularly. Oh, I also got a lovely coloured one which is fab and very bright!

Twiga · 27/09/2006 13:57

That's handy to know as I was thinking about a comprimise with dh and maybe buying a few bamboozles and the rest terry. The size thing is odd though, aprox half of mine come up short and none of them work with nippas anymore. didn't want to end up buying nppies that won't last through to potty training like they're supposed. Might buy one aplix bamboozle to see before commit to anything. Def feel I'm better starting from scratch then getting them to add the aplix.

Yes, one of my unbleached ones is too short as well which is a bit annoying. My local nappy seller also showed me a new fluffle which is made with some sort of new microfibre which doesn't catch as easily as the old sort and it was so soft - it may be worth you considering those too. He also said something about popper fastening bamboozles being available soon.

have tried a fluffle in size 1 and it was the only time dd had a red bottom - they are so lovely and soft though and if I thought she wouldn't react to them would be a contender.

I wander if the coming up short is a common prob/ how often it ocurs? I have just assumed that the terry ones wouldnt' have that prob - all my sixe 1's were fine.

You could try our Wham-Bamboo nappies which have wider tabs than Bamboozles so will fit a bigger child (ie longer around the waist). The bamboo fabric holds a nippa without a problem. They come in cream, pink or blue and the really nice thing is they're Oeko-Tex certified free of nasty chemical residues so are great for sensitive skin.

I'm surprised that the Tots Bots nappies are coming up differently. I've never seen this myself and we do sell a lot of them. I will ask them whether they've had a batch problem. Were they bought from an authorised TB retailer? There may be copies on the market.

The new fluffle is quite big and it's gorgeous. If your child has reacted to the old fabric, though, they may react to the new fabric too.

Our Swaddlebees organic velour in size 3 may be worth a consideration. They're not cheap, but fit stunningly well. I have a trial one I can send you if you like.

makesachange, i'm suprised at the diff in size too - had no probs with size 1's. I'm finding the tabs are nearly crossing over at the front on some but on others there's an inch gap between them when fastened at the front and they deffo fel tighter to get on. Dd is just a couple of weeks over a year old so they should def fit well - she is big for her age but even so is a skinny wee thing.

I bought them from Baby Goes Eco, who appear to be fine as a retailer, although it's taking them a while to reply to my emails just now. How do you know if an official retailer or not - my nappies look right and have tots labels in?!

Personally feeling really wary about bamboo just now although as have said dh loves them - when they work!

I think part of the problem is that cotton shrinks (about 10%) and I think bamboo does too. If the cloth is cut the right way, it doesn't matter much and if the aplix is there, this helps maintain the shape too as aplix doesn't shrink.

The wam-bamboo are def. longer but I do worry about the fibres matting - I've tried not to tumble the WB one I've got which I think caused the problem with the Bamboozle

Flamesparrow · 29/09/2006 11:15

So far there have been no issues reported with the geobel wambamboos with nippas - I've been using them a good few months now with no problems (but then, I never had a problem with my bamboozles either... I don't know if it was worse if you tumble them).

I've had size differences with tots before too, but I have with most nappies.

bobsmum · 29/09/2006 22:28

I"ve had no problems at all with my nippa bamboozles - does that mean I got the only good ones??

Twiga · 30/09/2006 07:33

You might just have Bobsmum! Mind you, ours were fine for ages, then gradually started to get worse and worse. If you do have any probs in future then get onto totsbots who will offer to add aplix for free and re-fund your postage costs.

I had no problems with mine - using them 24/7 for about 4 months. No tumbling though.

halffull · 18/10/2006 23:07

I have had bamboozles with nippa 4 months LOVE them, but need to get more size 2 (got mix of 1 & 2) but dont use tumble drier...got an airer above aga which seems to work great. Def want to keep using nippa - had rashes with others eg kushies in past where velcro (applix) digs in, curls and picks up fluff. Anyone tried poppers (now available) or know where to find other bamboo ones?

I heard that TB will do poppers too whcih may be better (at least you can still use a nippa and they won't be so bulky at the front)

Difers · 21/10/2006 20:00

I bought my bamboozles from a third party. They developed the old not fastening problem. I rang Totsbots direct and they agreed to apply Aplix to all 20 and gave me a free wrap and nappy to cover the cost of postage. They did them in two lots so I was never nappyless. I thought they wouldn't fit DS after but they do...they are great and DH LOVES them, he wouldn't never go back to nippas. Hope this helps!!!

sammysam · 24/10/2006 11:36

Hi-I really need some advise!
I recently bought size 2 fluffles (nippas) to use for my dd who's just over 12lbs now, but have found them to be very bulky (her legs are WIDE apart ) she is quite long and thin though! When I was researching I read that they were quite bulky but thought as she was thin it'd be less obvious but it seems to be the opposite!

Do you think I just need to wait a while and persevere with these or should I try the bamboozles as they are less bulky? Or something else completely?

I'm getting so confused now and starting the get the 'I told you so's' from people who think I?m crazy for wanting to use re-usable! I really want to prove them wrong!

Any advise would be great-please help!

Flamebat · 24/10/2006 11:41

wambamboo....

MrsWaggsnapps · 24/10/2006 19:31

There are a few which are narrower between the legs (usually made by mums with girls I think). Wambamboo (natch), nappy nation no fold and ellas house are all narrow. The first two can be got in bamboo and the third is hemp

mistlethrush · 25/10/2006 12:55

My ds is now 18m+ and size 2 TB have fitted from 6m onwards. Use terry applix during day and bamboozles applix at night - despite the length of use, all aplix still working, and never had any problem with applix digging in or causing irritation (although I do make sure the central section is slightly higher than the sides to avoid this). If I bought all over again I would consider just bamboozles, as they are less bulky and more absorbant and almost non-stick in terms of staining, but the drawback is that they take longer to dry.

Even the nursery is able to use the cloth nappies without too many accidents!

Galmum · 25/10/2006 19:16

Hi - I need advice too!

I'm planning to use bamboozles that have poppers - baby due in Jan. I bought one bamboozle nappy (with poppers) & wrap at The Baby Show last week.

  • Any advice on poppers versus aplix???
  • Why can't you tumble dry bamboozles - that is a bit off-putting??
  • I thought the bamboozles were meant to be quick drying anyway?

Please help??

Flamebat · 25/10/2006 22:27

Argh - definately NOT quick drying... they are really absorbant because of the bamboo, but that makes em hell to dry too

If you have poppers, then you CAN tumble - its only the nappi nippas that have a problem with them being tumbled.

I prefer poppers to aplix because it seems to rub DS (and he worked out how to open aplix far too early), but they can be slightly harder to get a neat fit because you are restricted to where the poppers are placed iyswim. I still prefer nippa for a proper fit.

littlekiwibaby · 25/10/2006 22:52

Hi,
our bamboo nappies are quicker drying than tots and a slightly larger fit. They are a new design shape and are made to be easy to use and easy to care for. They can be tumble dried, as can bamboozles- the issue with nippa tots bamboozles is that when they are repeatedly tumble dried the fibrse crunch down which makes nippaing difficult as the teeth cannot grab into the fabric so easily. However I have found that a good rub with a towel after drying can lift the fibres again and thus make them nippable.
The main benefit of aplix over popper is that the nappy fits more sizes. with popper fastenings they only fir the size the poppers are at. Aplix goes all the way across the front of the nappy. Plus it is easier to open and close BUT conversely it makes a heck of a noise if trying to change in the middle of the night LOL.
As PP said- if you make sure the front is slightly higher than the tabs there should be no issue with rubbing on the tummy.
Def agree with flamebat for nippa giving the best fit.

MKS · 26/10/2006 11:03

Someone gave me some great advice before I had DD1. She suggested I get a few of a variety of nappies and wraps second hand and try them out. I bought about 6 varieties (new) to try and after about a month my husband and I decided which ones we liked and which we didn't. I then got given an second hand motherease which we both liked, and seemed to contain DD1s extremely explosive poo which regularly went up her back in disposables. I then spent the serious money on a decent number of them.
There is a roaring trade in second hand nappies on e-bay. you can buy some, try them out and if you don't like them sell them on again. I know several people who bought a birth to potty set of nappies only to find they didn't work well with their kid and they had wasted £200 or more.

mistlethrush · 26/10/2006 20:56

MKS - I agree with this advice. We knew that we wanted to try washables, and had some advice from a friend, but waited a few weeks after the birth then got a 'trial' set through the post (effectively a rental for a couple of weeks). This had the whole range of the standard washables available at the time and all the wraps as well (we went through EcoBabies for this, but I think that several places do this now). What surprised us was that we ended up getting prefolds as well as a few shaped nappies - we are still using these now. These were great for the large number of nappy changes required at the start, and kept the cost down, and also dry a bit quicker. We now use these quite often during the day, but usually use a shaped nappy when going out, and always send shaped nappies to the nursery (as they'd have even more problems with a prefold). If we'd bought nappies without trying first, we would never have considered getting prefolds.
