DS doing poos which seem to literally burn him

Not all the time but every now and again. It's horrific and I don't know what to do.

He had a dirty nappy earlier which I changed and there was nothing wrong. About an hour later he starts really wailing so I go to see what's up. He's dirty again but this time his entire bottom and privates are absolutely red raw like they're burnt. I cleaned him up and smothered him with sudacrem but it took quite a while for him to calm down because he was in so much pain. Changed him again just before bed and the angryness has subsided and it looks much better and I know that by morning it'll be completely gone.

He's 17 months old and this has happened maybe a dozen times now. He's so distressed by it. What do I do?

I think a food diary would be a good start.

Dd suffered from this. But it was every time she went it was part of her milk intolerance. I know exactly how red raw it can leave them Sad

Is there anything you can think. Of Now that links the episodes?

swashbucklecheer · 24/09/2014 20:24

Try some nappy free time when it's very raw looking. Let the air at him for as long as you can

swashbucklecheer · 24/09/2014 20:25

Metanium is very good when red raw too

I agree with Giles -- keep a detailed food diary and see if any pattern emerges. A friend's DS had this happen every time he ate anything with tomato in, for example.

Highlandbird · 24/09/2014 20:26

DS gets like this when teething, would also second nappy free time, even ten mins will make a difference. Also try putting oats into a muslin tied up and put it into the bath...this seems to really calm my DS' bottom when it's really sore. Hope he feels better soon.

AnotherStitchInTime · 24/09/2014 20:33

Too much fruit especially citrus does this to my dd.

Someone on here said when nappy rash is really bad don't use wipes or water. Put on barrier cream lime metatanium. If a wee nappy do not break the barrier, just change the nappy without wiping. If a poo use baby oil and cotton wool. Apparently it gives the skin underneath the barrier cream a chance to hear, otherwise you strip more layers of skin off.

sleepdodger · 24/09/2014 20:36

Isheteething age? My son used to get it just prior to about Hmm
Metanium helped a little

ThisFenceIsComfy · 24/09/2014 20:39

Citrus fruit or anything wholewheat does this to my DS.

You need metanium. Sudocrem doesnt heal as well

LiverpoolLou · 24/09/2014 20:45

If it's diet related any idea of how long it takes from eating to coming out the other end? What sort of window do I need to be looking at for a diary? I don't think it happens often enough to need to write everything down.

In the last 2 days he's had:
Breakfast - banana, plain yogurt and lingon berries*
lunch - wholemeal bread, butter, sliced turkey, cucumber
snacks - apple, corn puffs, jammy dodger*
tea - baked potato*, bacon, mushrooms, onions
breakfast - baby porridge*, mixed fruit puree
lunch - cod and egg in parsley sauce (school dinner)
snack - banana, corn puffs, dried fruit

drinks: milk and water

*this is stuff he doesn't have very often

Does any of that look suspicious?

I'll have a look for metanium. Does anyone know what the active ingredient is? I'm not in the UK so it might only be available under a different name.

LiverpoolLou · 24/09/2014 20:48

He seems to be perpetually teething.

Tipsykisses · 24/09/2014 20:49

Could be one of a number of things ..
Milk or food Allergy , teething , general illness or even strong urine that has been in the nappy before they poop ....2 of my dc & 2 of my nephews have had this happen .

If you buy metanium go for the yellow one as that's the best and clean them off with just water if you can .
I'd also try a soak in the bath if you've got time & then give nappy free time .

Hope your little one feels better soon , my Ds never cried but screamed when he had this .x

Madamecastafiore · 24/09/2014 20:51

Weetabix did this to my DS!

Gileswithachainsaw · 24/09/2014 20:53

The fruit puree, apple and dried fruit could potentially be the culprits.

I would also ditch the baby porridge (unnecessary additives etc) just stick to regular porridge.

There's nothing else that jumps out really but obviously we need more to go on with regards to spotting a pattern.

LiverpoolLou · 24/09/2014 20:54

I don't think it's connected to his milk. He has that 3 times a day, every day. He'd be screaming the house down continuously if it was caused by his milk I think. Poor little fella :(

My son gets this occasionally - comes on so quickly and poos smell really acidy. I think it's teething and the good thing is with a little metanium it heals quickly too. Good luck x

MaxsMummy2012 · 24/09/2014 21:00

My lb had this and my SIL said that occasionally a wee and poo can cause a reaction making it acidy (not sure if that's a word) that can then cause severe nappy rash. Hopefully the occurrences will be few and far between.

LiverpoolLou · 24/09/2014 21:04

Hmm, I wonder if it's the fruit puree now. I've just had a look at it and I've picked up Nestle ones by mistake. I usually avoid theirs since DH (a scientist) looked into the chemical structure of their formula and was horrified at what he found. So DS has fruit puree quite a lot, but not this variety.

I fully intend to ditch the baby porridge. DS hates it anyway, hence the fruit puree I have to use to diguise it. I just use it every now and again to try and use it up. Once it's gone, it's not coming back.

OP posts:
LiverpoolLou · 24/09/2014 21:05

Could also be the wee and poo thing because it's over the whole area covered by his nappy pretty much. Not just where he's dirty.

PinkAndBlueBedtimeBears · 24/09/2014 21:09

My dd has this and in my mind it's linked to teething. I took her to the drs about it once because she was actually bleeding and couldn't have been sat in a dirty nappy for any longer than 5 mins because I changed it and it was fine, made a cup of tea, changed her again as she had pooed and it was awful. He said its unlikely to be diet related because I couldn't think of anything new the first few times she had it, and within a month of her having it she normally has a new tooth!

LiverpoolLou · 24/09/2014 21:16

He had 3 teeth coming through at the moment I think. It's hard to know what stage he's at because he's a bugger for biting anything that passes his lips.

Can't add anything else to the theories as to why it may be happening, but wanted to share that Weleda Calendula nappy cream is incredible stuff! It calmed down the awful burning rash DS had (had been in a dirty nappy for a while, it wasn't remotely smelly so nursery staff didn't spot it in time) within hours. Quite a few MNers recommend it too

mineofuselessinformation · 24/09/2014 21:42

My oldest used to blister every time she was teething...
The only thing that helped was the old-fashioned Metanium cream. It is messy though!

MyFabulousBoys · 24/09/2014 21:43

Kiwi fruit used to do this to both of mine. They both grew out of it though. Keep a food diary

Doodledot · 24/09/2014 22:27

Both mine had this every time about to cut a tooth. Metonium and sudacrem together for me
