DS doing poos which seem to literally burn him

Not all the time but every now and again. It's horrific and I don't know what to do.

He had a dirty nappy earlier which I changed and there was nothing wrong. About an hour later he starts really wailing so I go to see what's up. He's dirty again but this time his entire bottom and privates are absolutely red raw like they're burnt. I cleaned him up and smothered him with sudacrem but it took quite a while for him to calm down because he was in so much pain. Changed him again just before bed and the angryness has subsided and it looks much better and I know that by morning it'll be completely gone.

He's 17 months old and this has happened maybe a dozen times now. He's so distressed by it. What do I do?

Whenever this happened with my DD1 with extremely sensitive skin, I found that Sudocrem, Burts Bees, etc did not provide enough barrier protection. I also think these ointments must sting the skin. The best thing, surprisingly, was to slather Vaseline over the affected area during the day, using it at every nappy change to maintain a barrier. And then at night you can use the sudocrem/burts bees/whatever to help with healing.

My daughter has this occaisionaly. I've never been able to pin it down to a cause. Always seems very random and I've not noticed any dietary links at all.
For her I reckon then poo/wee scenario is most likely.
Happens maybe once a month if that. Weird.
