More help needed for the reusable virgin!!

I decided on trying Terries for my first forray into reusables and after taking ages to come, I washed them yesterday and decided to try them today.

So far not so good.

I bought the extra large terries as my DS is a big boy and motherease wraps. First one on thismorning and he did a MASSIVE poo that went all over the linner, nappy and wrap. Second one on and he had gone through to the wrap in less than 2 hours. Have to admit that I have just put DS in a disposable for his nap as he had a bad night with teething and I really want him to have a good sleep.

Am I doing something wrong or is it just this hard? Have tried Pad folding so far but seems to be useless around the leg and really bulky. I have tried other folds on a teddy but they are not long enough or wide enough (as I said he is a big boy, tall and chubby in the waist and thighs- in size 5 nappies and they are a bit on the small size!)

should i have opted for a fitted nappy? Any advise on folds?

He is 14 months but I am preg with another due in Jan so if I decided to try a fitted one would I be better with a one size so they are in the same or two sets, one for each and the baby grows into the bigger size. I am planning to have more children after this one so they would have to last.

No advice on terries specifically, sorry. I use motherease onesize an dtotsbots. But a MASSIVE poo can defeat even the best fitting nappy (and disposables too) so that one doesn't count!!! Are you checking all the edges of the wrap once it is on, to make sure no nappy is showing around the legs/waist?

Sorry if this isn't much help...someone better will come along I'm sure!

Flamesparrow · 22/09/2006 11:25

I'm useless with terries and have always had to used shaped for any kind of containment...

For the new baby - one size ones are great. i'm still the bouncing wambamboo lady for a btp fit because the tabs are so long, they fit big bums really well.

JessaJam · 22/09/2006 11:28

There was someone on MN who used terries....who was it? And where are they??

Flamesparrow - had a look at the wambamboo nappies and they look good. Do you have the velcro ones or do you use nippas?

JML - found your name looking through nappy threads. What folds do you use?

Boy did I take a double look at that title

Hi, I sometimes use terries on my 14 month old. We use either the Jo Fold (Nappy Lady Site) or Kite Fold with a tots booster in the centre. The trick with the Kite fold is to sort of roll and tuck the nappy around the legs once you have nippa'd it and then you should get enough in the way of containment for a weaned baby. Also, make sure that the nappy isn't in contact with the binding on the wrap as it can wick.

madmarchhare · 22/09/2006 15:51

lol @ reusable virgin

Dragonhart · 22/09/2006 16:33

Right, have had one fine nappy change and slightly adjusted the fold so seems a lot better.

I am using the Jo fold too from the nappy laddy as it seems to have the most up front.

Right, I was thinking about getting a shapped nappy for night time and if I go out in the day to make things a bit easier for me.

Have found wambamboo for £50 for 6 does that sound like a good price? Are they a good night time nappy and do they dry very slowly?

had to do a double take at the title AND then check what subject it was under... I was sat there thinking 'eh' a reusable virgin??? must be some sort of bizarre s-e-x toy!!!!

Flamesparrow · 22/09/2006 17:19

I use the nippa WBB - it is easier for the btp type option because it is easier to fold down the front.

Argh - just looking up prices of WBBs now

Flamesparrow · 22/09/2006 17:20

Found it - £48.99 plus p&p... and the bag they come in is really handy.

You would need an extra booster (just a microfibre cloth is good) for nighttime use.

merrily · 22/09/2006 17:38

If your DS is a big boy I would advise buying one WamBamboo first to check the sizing. I have a very big 18 month old (36lbs-ish) and the size 2 WBB is very snug on her, and won't last much longer. I have the Velcro one though - maybe the plain Nippa one would fit a bit better. They are lovely nappies, though they do take ages to dry!

thankyoupoppet · 22/09/2006 18:43

try the nappy lady website for the ro-fold it is fantastic if the terry is big enough. (look under practical tips.) terrys are fab if you can get into the swing of it because if you get it right folding them then you can get a really good made to measure fit. I love em!!

Dragonhart · 22/09/2006 19:17

Tried the ro fold on the teddy and it seemed enormous. They all do to be honest. I bought the 80cm squares but they are so bulky. Used three today though and two went really well.

Must admit that I put him in a disposable to sleep (as he has not been sleeping well because of his teeth and I didnt want something like a new nappy stop him) and as I was carrying him up it seemed sooo much neater. Are terries much bulkier or are all reusables huge!

Worried about the size of wambams now. DS is over 28lbs at 14 months. I have bought the large motherese wraps but noticed that they have left marks on his waist and leg tonight.

OP posts:
Flamesparrow · 22/09/2006 20:47

I managed the wambams on my large bummed 3 yr old (age 4 or 5 knickers), but to be fair, although her bum is big, her waist is fairly slim so it could make a difference?

merrily · 22/09/2006 21:50

My DD has chunky thighs and a big round belly, so that probably explains why the wambamboos are a bit snug on her!!

I have also found that the Motherease Airflow XL wrap is too tight and leaves nasty red marks around her legs and tummy.

I have settled on XL Fuzzi Bunz for daytime as they seem to be the most comfortable and easy to use - though they're quite pricey.

DD is still in disposables at night - I have bought an Ella's House Bumhugger for night-time which fits her nicely, but I am having real trouble finding a wrap to fit over it!

Dragonhart · 23/09/2006 12:58

Right Flamesparrow, I am sure you are sick of answering questions on wambams but I am pretty much convinced as they go to 40lbs and I have read you can use them for a smaller nappy by some clever folding (would you agree?).

I want them just to take out really and maybe for night time. Think I will be washing every night, def after the new baby comes so do you think 6 will be enough if I am using about 2 a day at the most. I am still planning to use terries at home and perhaps at night (still have that adventure to come!!). I am worried about the drying time you see.

OP posts:
Dragonhart · 23/09/2006 19:26

I was too impatient and have just bought them. Think it will be ok and got them for 48.99 with free postage! Cant wait!!

Folded nappies going better now as have found ways to adjust thewidth at dif points. No more leaks so far.

Thanks for all the advice xxx

Flamesparrow · 25/09/2006 07:51

Sorry - a weekend off!!! If you are using just 2 a day and washing every night, then 6 should be fine. Just wait til they come... you'll just want to sit and cuddle them

topsy1 · 25/09/2006 10:04

have brought 7 WBB - one to try and then brought the 6 with wet bag - find really good fit - large 22 mth ds who was 32lbs a couplke of months ago - snug, comfortable fit, really slim, and does as long as a disposible. use it with a me airflow wrap - they come with boosters which i fold double for ds, as hes a huge wetter! drying wise, they do take a long time, but i feel its worth it. my s is prone to bad nappy rash, and hasn't had any probs so far!?

Dragonhart · 25/09/2006 11:01

Thanks topsy v reasuring on the size, although now I wish I had bought more!! Cant wait til they come. Thats the thing I hate about buying things on the internet. Just too impatient.

Thanks flame and everyone else - will let you know how I get on with them.

Dragonhart · 11/10/2006 22:13

Got them, used them, love them!!!

Left one on DS today for 5 hours (forgot to change it in the afternoon- god am I a REALLY bad mum!!) and when I took it off, although the nappy was soaked, his skin was not and no redness. Very impressed.

The fit is perfect and loads of room to grow into!

Cheers for the advise everyone. BUY WAMBAMBOOS!!!
