General procrastination/support/panic thread for students?

QisforQcumber · 08/06/2014 15:40

Be gentle, this is my first ever attempt at a thread. Smile

Is anyone interested in starting up a general chatty thread for posters undertaking any kind of study? I'm supposed to be catching up on reading for my course but decided to start a thread instead.

No pencils, books or brain matter required.

I will start. I'm Q, I am an English Lang/Lit student with the OU. I work full time and I'm in my first year if study.

Over to you....

I'm so glad you're all with me on the nap thing. Grin We had a late night watching the football and no naps banked today due to Dad related visits and activities.

Cake for Mini Nightwish and MiniUterus. Hope they both had a very happy birthday.

Nightwish How cool are you? Envy. I'm not sure I have the coordination for motorcycling but I would love DH to learn and take me out. Best of luck for Tuesday and take lots of naps. Wink

Well done nightwish!

I've caved and asked for an extension. DS is sick and had to come home from childcare!

QisforQcumber · 18/06/2014 18:43

Hope your Ds is feeling better Hazchem. Kids have a knack for timing illness at the worst possible times don't they?.

How did the bike test go Nightwish? --crosses fingers that she is out there in the open road in leathers enjoying the wind in her hair-

Strikeout fail

darn

OP posts:
Nightwish · 18/06/2014 19:58

I bloody failed!
The U-turn got me, darn thing.
My bikes turning circle isn't overly great and I thought I was going to go over the line, turned in sharper and put my foot down. Silly me.
Re-booked for a week today.
The rest of it went fine so hopefully will be alright next week.

QisforQcumber · 18/06/2014 22:06

I think practice tests are always better anyway. Grin
Is it as expensive as the car test? i failed that 3 times....£££

TheWanderingUterus · 18/06/2014 22:42

mini uterus had a very lovely birthday, thanks for asking.

Sorry to hear about the bike test Nightwish, I failed my car test ....ahem.... more times than Q.

Hope the extension goes well Hazchem.

I met with my supervisor today and we planned the next few months of work. Very lucky to have such a sympathetic and understanding supervisor. He said he didn't have any concerns other than actual research time, which is good. Lots to do now, thankfully less stressful than last piece.

UnderEstherMate · 19/06/2014 22:32

Well done for finishing your exams Nightwish, never mind about the bike test. It's good to practice!

Procrastination got the better of me this week. I'm still at my essay, with at least 1,000 words to go. It's due tomorrow. At 11am. Sad Sad Sad

Nightwish · 20/06/2014 08:45

Luckily it is only £15.50 Q because it is broken up into two parts. I failed the Module one which is off road doing slow maneuvering and emergency stops.
The module 2 is £75 so hopefully I don't fail that one but need to get eh module 1 out the way first.

I passed my car test first time, I think that may have just been fluke.

Hope your work is nearly done Under, I am an awful last minute person. However when I am back in September I intend not to be for once!

And hoping the 'lots to do' is going well Uterus.

TheWanderingUterus · 20/06/2014 10:38

Hope you got it in Under.

I'm sure you will pass next time Night, £15.50 isn't too bad. It was the money that hurt most when I failed my tests, I felt so guilty at spending a weeks worth of groceries on my mistake.

'lots to do' has made 0% progress.

I have to make corrections and add research to my last piece. The list of corrections itself is two sides of A4 so I laughed at my supervisor when he suggested 2 weeks. We provisionally agreed on 4. I need to write a conclusion as well which I haven't done before at this level.

Then I have to make a Bibliography, divided into secondary and primary sources which will be huge. Paragraph at the beginning saying where I am thinking of going next.

Another two weeks for that.

Then I need to make five trips to London libraries and double the size of my bibliography, with another paragraph.

Beginning of Sept for that (ish).

Finally I have to read some of the papers/books I am accumulating. Including an 800 page whopper on the history of the natural sciences.

It's all doable, but I just need a cattle prod to keep me on track

UnderEstherMate · 20/06/2014 17:50

I did, thanks! I was up until about 3am and still editing at uni this morning, but got there in the end.

Bike riding sounds so exciting. I want to give it a go but I think I'm way too much of a chicken!

God wandering I don't envy you right now!

TheWanderingUterus · 20/06/2014 19:36

I don't envy myself either, Under!

I have half a bibliography floating around the house (not literally). It's in lots of different boxes, some is on the computer, lots on loose leaf paper and notebooks. I need to be more organised really. It's going to take a good long while just to input the fucker into my laptop, but it will be better in the long run.

It makes me very glad that I am part time!

TheWanderingUterus · 20/06/2014 19:39

Forgot to add, well done for getting your essay in!

I have had far too much sugar today so my mind and body are pinging off the walls. It was a hard job but I quality tested all the sweets for tomorrow's party bags Grin.

UnderEstherMate · 23/06/2014 10:57

I just saw this - thank you!

Nightwish · 23/06/2014 12:44

Urgh I had an awful dream last night that I got my results for my ordinary degree and I had only got a pass. We get pass, merit or distinction based on % so pass is 40%, merit is 60% and distinction 70%.

I need a merit at least to be able to progress onto next year and although all of my assignment work has been at distinction level (bar one bloody essay which was a pass, idiot lecturer who said it was distinction level but I answered the question wrong or some crap) I am obviously worried I messed up my exams.
I woke up in such a panic!

Hope you are all working away well!
I intend this week to choose my modules for next year and sort getting the necessary reading.
My results are on the 7th July so need to distract myself.
Module 1 bike retest on Weds, so fingers crossed for that too.

Nightwish · 25/06/2014 14:37

I passed Grin.
Now on to module 2.

UnderEstherMate · 25/06/2014 15:06

Congratulations! When is the next one booked for?

Hazchem · 26/06/2014 02:08

nitghtwish nice work on passing! That dream sounds rotten. Hope you shake that feeling soon.

I'm on the final edit of my essay. i managed to get it to "smartthinking" which is an online tutor service. The tutor isn't form my discipline but has given some good feedback of where I can improve. So slowly working through that. Very slowly as I'm looking after DS as OH is at a meeting to get some advanced standing for a diploma he hopes to start next month.

Nightwish · 04/07/2014 21:59

My test is booked for Monday.
And I got my results today for my degree (Ord), I got a distinction!
Not got my percentage yet but it is over 70% so hopefully I can keep up those marks for next year for my hons top up.
Grin

TheWanderingUterus · 06/07/2014 13:18

Well done Nightwish! You've had a good few weeks!

We were all wiped out by a gastric bug here and I am struggling to regain momentum. Deadline is approaching next week and I still have a lot to do.

DS is starting school in September, so looking forward to all that extra time!

PeoplesFrontOfJudea · 06/07/2014 13:27

Hello all,

I quit my secure, FT (but hideous) job last week to retrain and re-enter the world of education. I start in Sept. I'm a bit scared.

Can I sit here for a bit?

TheWanderingUterus · 06/07/2014 15:14

Hello, PeoplesFront,

Course you can sit in here, this is the place to be!

What course will you be studying?

PeoplesFrontOfJudea · 06/07/2014 15:35

Nursing [insert excited/terrified face here]

TheWanderingUterus · 06/07/2014 15:50

That's fab!

My SIL retrained as a nurse in her early forties once her kids had started school. She absolutely loves her job, she was going to go on and train as a midwife but decided to stick as a nurse because she enjoyed it so much.

PeoplesFrontOfJudea · 06/07/2014 18:20
Smile

I'm leaving an operational role in the NHS for a clinical one, so hopefully I'm going in with eyes open (as far as you can).

Good luck to all of us !
