General procrastination/support/panic thread for students?

QisforQcumber · 08/06/2014 15:40

Be gentle, this is my first ever attempt at a thread. Smile

Is anyone interested in starting up a general chatty thread for posters undertaking any kind of study? I'm supposed to be catching up on reading for my course but decided to start a thread instead.

No pencils, books or brain matter required.

I will start. I'm Q, I am an English Lang/Lit student with the OU. I work full time and I'm in my first year if study.

Over to you....

Exam number 4 down only 1 to go.
Well sort of, I now have my module 1 bike test booked for Tuesday, just as I was looking forward to having a break.
So tomorrow I need to squeeze in last minute revision and a motorbike lesson whilst looking after DS2 and buying stuff for DS1's birthday and party on Friday and Saturday.
Sometimes it feels never ending!

I agree Wandering. People in my class moaning about how they have no time to revise, I would love them to try it with two kids.

TheWanderingUterus · 11/06/2014 21:19

It is never ending isn't it. When I think about how little I did as an undergrad I could cry, I certainly would like some of that time now.

DH is away at the moment (he works away a lot) and as he is knackered when he comes back most things still fall on me to do.

Did I read it was your son's birthday on Friday Nightwish? It's my daughter's 9th birthday then too. We are having her party next week though as the place we hired was busy this weekend. DH has mentioned he might make the cake....

I have got some things off my to do list, but my house is filthy and I need to do something about it as well.

EasyWhiteChocolate · 12/06/2014 09:01

Nearly there Nightwish!

It really is never ending. Although, when I have less on my to do list I get really lazy, so I'm a bit glad when I'm kept on my toes a bit!

I hope both of your DCs have a lovely day today Nightwish and Wandering

Thank you Easy, it's actually tomorrow. Some jokers at school have already started with the Friday 13th comments, but she doesn't seem to care. DS was born on the 13th too (different month though) so I think its something we are going to have to get used to!

DS is at nursery today so I am getting on with my to do list. In about ten minutes I promise. Grin

EasyWhiteChocolate · 12/06/2014 09:16

Gosh, I was thinking today was Friday! That gives me an extra day before deadlines then Grin Well I hear it's actually lucky to be born on Friday 13th anyway!

Write your to-do list! (Even though that's a procrastination in itself. I spend half my days writing to-do lists and making sure they look nice and tidy!)

Indith · 12/06/2014 09:30

Oooh hello. I've not been in these parts for quite a while. I used to love these threads back in my first degree. We'd pop in, set targets and generally chivvy each other along. It was good.

Now I'm a student again with more children to juggle than last time and vast amounts of work. And it seems my procrastination skills know no bounds.

EasyWhiteChocolate · 12/06/2014 09:32

Hello Indith, welcome back to student life! What are you studying now?

I like the idea of setting targets. Perhaps mine should be to actually get off of MN and start some work by 10.00!

QisforQcumber · 12/06/2014 13:47

Hello hello hello!

Got 700 words typed up yesterday so I'm feeling good. I'm a week ahead too so feeling rather smug with myself.

Early birthday Cake for Mini Uterus and Mini Nightwish.

Targets sound good, my target is to stop recording new series links on Sky. I must get DS to fill the hard drive with Dragon Riders of Burke.

Hi all!

I have an essay to write, it's due next Friday. I'm so tired! Do I nap or do I write? Please say nap.

Hazchem · 13/06/2014 09:56

under I too have an essay due next Friday and I have to admit I took a lunch time nap.

I'm in my second year (part time) of a community Development degree via OUA(ustralia)
I've been in this current unit for 2 weeks and I think I might hate! We have no support, it's unclear and we have 1500 word essay due next friday. The essay is a review of campus students reports!

Dolittledo · 13/06/2014 10:08

Please may I join in? I'm a second year PhD, looking at organizational change, and really struggling to do anything these days! Today I'm meant to be coding my recent interviews but here I am.....

Indith · 13/06/2014 10:33

Student Midwife. 2nd year. Currently on placement so long shifts + evidence file to do. Also need to research and essay due not long after we go back into uni which is the summative essay from a module we did on last uni block and I really, really want to get all the research done before we go back in to uni as we will be picking up 3 new modules then each with their own assessment to do. But I am tired, procrastinating, busy with other things and really struggling to motivate myself to do the evidence file which needs to be done before the essay.

I need a serious kick up the bum. Gave myself yesterday off following doing 3 long shifts in a row (7.15am to 8.45pm) to do house and garden stuff and relax a bit so today I need to work my arse off while children are at school and CM. So far I've done the school run, been to Lidl and put some washing on. Not looking good....

TheWanderingUterus · 13/06/2014 11:26

Hello all the new people!

I have read some of a book (hooray) but am being distracted by the fact that it is Mini Uterus's birthday. Going to go and get some bits for a family party in a minute.

Again, have spent quite a lot of time on Twitter today. Also quite a lot of lying around which I have classed as 'thinking' but doesn't progress anything materially!

QisforQcumber · 13/06/2014 11:42

Lots of new blood Grin

I need to read through all the replies properly later as I'm about to go out. Chill me a Wine (Rose please) and I will be back later.

Hazchem · 14/06/2014 01:31

I'm at the "need to actually write something" stage and as always feel I just don't know where to start the essay topic is both complex and very very unclear. The essay question is written in three different places all with slightly different instructions and emphasis.
I've not heard from my tutor or lecture in over a week (nor has anyone else online).

I'm so temped to chuck this unit in. I'm 15 weeks pregnant and this will be my last unit until after the babies born.
Feel unsupported and left a drift.

Hazchem · 14/06/2014 02:36

I've final had some contact with the tutor who has basically said just read the workshop scripts ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRHHHHHHHHHHh What the fuck does he think I have been doing?

UnderEstherMate · 14/06/2014 08:47

What are you studying Hazchem?

Hazchem · 14/06/2014 11:15

The unit is Creative ways to work Community. The essay is report on a campus students group powerpoint presentation on a workshop they attended about participatory community planning processes. I'm meant to use literature to critique the methods used in the powerpoint presentation.

UnderEstherMate · 14/06/2014 13:31

Oh goodness, that does seem quite vague! A whole report on giving a presentation, and not the actual content itself? How long does it need to be?

QisforQcumber · 14/06/2014 19:03

That does sound vauge Hazchem! How the bloody hell do you use literature to critique clip art and corporate buzz word quotes (we use PowerPoint at work). I've had a 3 hour nap this afternoon Blush, hardly productive.

OP posts:
Hazchem · 14/06/2014 21:20

The report needs to be 1500 words! We have to explore the methods they used to put the powerpoint together. Not that they have said what they used we have to guess and then discuss the political and theoretical context of the method.

I've had the lecturer before and he is nob end of the highest order but this essay takes the cake.

Hazchem · 14/06/2014 21:20

If you feel better afterwards napping can help :)

TheWanderingUterus · 14/06/2014 22:51

Napping is good, nothing better than a good nap for refresh the brain.

Assignment sounds nightmarish Hazchem, I don't envy you that one.

I have got little done today. I very foolishly confiscated the books 'warhorse' and 'soldier dog' from DD last night as she was weeping hysterically over them. I didn't think about the fact that there was no one to confiscate them from me as I was sobbing over them at 1am, unable to put them down.

TheWanderingUterus · 14/06/2014 22:51

*refreshing

Nightwish · 15/06/2014 10:26

Welcome all the new people!

I had my last exam for this year on Friday, was boiling in the room, think I did okay but not sure.
Yesterday was birthday party for DS1 after his birthday Friday.
Hope your DD had a good day too Uterus
Now just the bike test on Tuesday.

I am feeling very relieved and stress free though.
Weird feeling I had forgotten even existed.
I think I will start some reading for next year in a couple of weeks once I have decided on the modules I am taking, need to be prepared for actual full-time uni.

Haz your assignment sounds awful, best of luck for it!
