How to change a nappy?!

This probably sounds ridiculous and I'm sure there's no need for me to type that I'm a new Mum! Truth is I'm actually not new to changing nappies and up until now had felt quite confident in my abilities but have just now asked myself the dreaded question... Is it me?!
Since DS was born (he's 3MO), I've had trouble with leaking nappies, mostly poo, sometimes wee. I've changed brands several times (have tried Pampers, Kiddicare Just4Bums, Aldi Mamia, Morrisons Little Big) and all have failed me. Hence why I'm now wondering, am I putting them on wrong?! Or at least am I not putting them on in the most effective way? I understand that sometimes nappies leak but I'm talking all the time (I'd say 80% of his poos leak) and the stain removal process is becoming expensive!
So I've come to Mumsnet in search of tips please on how to put on the perfect nappy?!

I know how you feel, with ds he'd leaked on the way home from the hospital! Firstly do you have the right size, too big or too small can cause leaks. Once it's done up I've found if you run your finger around the leg bit to make sure it's laying properly helps. Oh and course with boys 'they' need to be pointing down! Hth

TheDudess · 23/05/2014 05:28

I feel your pain. My 2 month old has a lot of poo stained Vests. Tried em all like you and most leak poo. I think it's a velocity/volume issue.

ASDA little angels are good, as are the morrisons ones.

I've come to the conclusion that it's just normal tbh. If I hear that baby is starting to do a poo I've taken to putting her on the change mat straight away and stripping off the vest abs sleepsuit so that when it leaksout require a full change.

TheDudess · 23/05/2014 05:29

*doesn't require a full change

They can leak and some nappies are better than others for certain!
Are you making sure the frilly bit by the leg is pulled out? That can be a channel for poo otherwise.
I found Sainsburys with the elasticated waist ones were ok - just make sure they are quite tightly done up.

Good luck!

gizmosmama · 23/05/2014 05:44

Thank you everyone so far, can't decide whether I'm disappointed or glad to hear it's not just me!
For nappy size I've just gone off the weight guide on the nappies (DS currently in size 3) but I do sometimes wonder where the velcro tabs should reach to? Also wonder how tight I should do them up?

Aldi nappies are really good. Get the right size, fasten firmly, ensure boys' willies are pointing down, pull the frills out - and buy Napisan for the stains!

Somanyillustrations · 23/05/2014 05:51

Try cloth nappies! We never have leaks at home, but on the odd occasion that I've used disposables out and about, DS has ended up covered in poo Hmm I hate them!

SpecialStuff · 23/05/2014 05:55

On dd I make sure the tabs are pulled tight until they almost reach in the middle to make sure it's tight enough. She's 14mo and in aldi Mamia size 4+ so maybe you need a smaller size?

The nappy weights overlap and I've found different brands need different sizes. If we went back to asda nappies she'd be in at least a 5 I think as we found Aldis slightly bigger.

You shouldn't get 80% leaking of poo, unless your ds does poonami's each time!

Yy to making sure the frilly flaps are out. Also if you lift the leg flaps you can see how tight/loose the elastic is on the leg. In my experience it should be sitting snugly against their leg so if yours is gaping a smaller size would be needed.

LoveBeingInTheSun · 23/05/2014 12:20

Where do you think it's leaking?

Cuppachaplz · 23/05/2014 13:39

I'm with somany here; never had a leak with cloth nappies (at least not when I had put them on - sometimes Granny caused an issue!), but if I ever used disposables there was nearly always poo leakage.

gizmosmama · 23/05/2014 23:04

Hi LoveBeingInTheSun, I've had the occasional one up the back but usually it's out of the leg holes.
I am doing all the things mentioned so far which is reassuring that I'm not just being a muppet but I was sort of hoping it would be something simple and obvious that I was missing!

Def pul the frilly bits out - whenever MIL used to look after DDs she ever did and we always had poo leakage.

NorthEasterlyGale · 24/05/2014 09:22

Another vote for cloth here - love 'em.

KildaTiffany · 24/05/2014 09:29

Definitely think about the size - both too big and too small can be an issue. Make sure the "frills" are arranged right. Depending on brand, there will probably be a "frill" both inside and outside leg, and possibly even an additional row too. We referred to these as "poo catching frills" and if the outer ones get tucked inside the nappy is more likely to leak. However, explosive babypoo often does overwhelm every line of defence. We found that using reusables with an inner absorbant layer and a separate waterproof exterior wrap was much less likely to leak than a disposable, but other people have different experiences.

Coughle · 24/05/2014 09:43

Try one size up. I found the weight guides were usually optimistic.

beanynamechange · 24/05/2014 09:47

With the age and size nappy you using I'd personally try and size down.. What about asda little angels? They are the only ones that keep my dds poo contained!!

NotCitrus · 24/05/2014 10:00

Sounds a bit big for a 3mo, but could be fine. Do as snugly as you can.
IME disposable nappies always leak runny stuff, cloth ones won't if they are the right shape and done up snugly - my kids never leaked at home but did frequently at nursery as staff never did them up tightly.

TheScience · 24/05/2014 10:04

I've found cloth ones don't leak newborn poo - however DS2 seems to poo directly up his back in disposables every time. I don't know how he does it.

FurryGiraffe · 24/05/2014 10:13

Another vote for cloth. Also for Sainsbury's Little ones disposables because they're elasticated on the waist: everything else I tried on DS leaked. And hang stained clothing outside: UV light is a marvel for removing poo stains!

LearningAsIGoMummy · 24/05/2014 12:22

We had big leakage problems to begin with, daily poo all over the place. Started with pampers, but they leaked round legs and up back. Tried Aldi and Tesco and had similar issues. Concluded that she had a skinny bum and thighs, and just wasn't chubby enough to stop leakage.
Since chubbing out, we're back in pampers, and no leaks. She does have quite a little waist, so that might have been the problem. She's 12wks, and weighs 12lb ish (not had her weighed for a few weeks). She's been in size 1 until last night, when she wore her first size 2. Officially, she should have moved up a size before now, but size 1 weren't leaking and I wanted to use up what we had. With size 2 on, leaked overnight for the first time in ages. Might be worth trying your LO in a smaller nappy size.

gizmosmama · 24/05/2014 22:03

Hmmm, I am very careful with the frills and I'm afraid I don't really fancy cloth so I think I'll try going down a size. The size 3 say 9-20lb and DS is 13lb 8oz so I just assumed they were right and didn't even consider that as the reason for leaks. The size 2 say 6-13lb but for a fiver it's worth a go! Thank you everyone!

TheDudess · 24/05/2014 23:32

Seriously? The frills need to be pulled out?

What else don't I know?

plipplops · 25/05/2014 09:00

TheDudess store your wipes packs upside down so the moisture goes into the wipes you're going to use next rather than making soggy ones at the bottom (I thank you...)

addictedtosugar · 25/05/2014 09:17

Are you putting the waist band high enough up - the nappy should finish round the tummy button level.
Yes yes yes to storing wipes upside down.

GoogleyEyes · 25/05/2014 09:23

Some babies just out-poo disposable nappies, no matter what you do. I found the ones with elastic at the back (so NOT Pampers) gave me an extra 30 seconds to get her the changing mat.
