How to change a nappy?!

This probably sounds ridiculous and I'm sure there's no need for me to type that I'm a new Mum! Truth is I'm actually not new to changing nappies and up until now had felt quite confident in my abilities but have just now asked myself the dreaded question... Is it me?!
Since DS was born (he's 3MO), I've had trouble with leaking nappies, mostly poo, sometimes wee. I've changed brands several times (have tried Pampers, Kiddicare Just4Bums, Aldi Mamia, Morrisons Little Big) and all have failed me. Hence why I'm now wondering, am I putting them on wrong?! Or at least am I not putting them on in the most effective way? I understand that sometimes nappies leak but I'm talking all the time (I'd say 80% of his poos leak) and the stain removal process is becoming expensive!
So I've come to Mumsnet in search of tips please on how to put on the perfect nappy?!

I think this is quite normal in the first few months, particularly with breastfed babies. Volume and velocity outsmarts the nappy as a pp said.

If it's leg leaks, make sure the nappy goes right in the crease at the groom/top of thigh, and do the tabs up as tight as you can. DH always puts nappies on too low down and that seems to cause leaks.

I found Pampers to be best at this stage and moved on to Aldi/Pampers Simply Dry/other own brand at about 4 months and haven't had many leaks since.

Please can someone help me. My cat need to wear nappies as he is has recently lost the use of his back legs and cannot do what he used to do. Can someone advise me in terms of how tightly you put a disposable nappy on. I do not have any children and am new to this but apparently baby nappies are perfect for animals too. I do not want to put it on too tightly but see that they are elasticated. Know this is an unusual request but would really value some help. Thank you.

I would recommend pampers active fit nappy pants i have had considerably less leaks since using them

DS has jet-propelled poo Envy

Nearly every poo went up his back. We switched to Aldi and went up a size so that the back was higher. Much better after that, but maybe 1/8 still leak.

You could try instead of the excess nappy being at the front make the pouch at the back will give you a bit of space for the poo.

Or look at getting some 'bomb proof' outers that go over reusable nappies that will stop 99 out of 100 explosions. I use Little Lambs outers.

Now I'm getting paranoid because I had a disastrous time with cloth nappies. It used to ooze out of both leg holes every single time. I was determined to get the hang of it after investing in a very expensive set of Wonderoos but I had to give up out of sheer exhaustion.

Changed to Asda and never looked back.
