As a lead on from the 'ban party bags' thread, who had party bags as a child?

I never did. We had a bit of cake wrapped in a paper napkin and thought ourselves lucky (shades of 4 yorkshiremen sketch )

Is this because I am old, 44, or because we were poor?

so how old are you, and did you have party bags?

bordering on 28 and yes we did, but had 'home' parties

Coolmama · 30/08/2006 09:57

never heard of them until DS was invited to a birthday party and the mom asked me what I wanted in his party bag??? (he was a bit younger than the other kiddies) -
When I was little we got cake in a napkin and whatever little party favour you had won playing musical chairs or pin the tail -

coppertop · 30/08/2006 09:58

I'm 32 and we didn't have party bags. We usually got a pice of cake though.

27 piece of cake stuck to a napkin

Auntymandy · 30/08/2006 10:01

just cake here too. Plus...only one prize in pass the parcel..not one in every layer.
Our kids will have a tough life when theyrealise everyone isnt a winner out there!!!!

JessaJam · 30/08/2006 10:02

28
We had party bag, yukky cake with chewy icing wrapped in a paper napkin, variety of sweets (flying saucers and fizzy cola bottles and those chocolate buttons covered in muliticooured sugary beads) and maybe one or two cheapish bits like a winnie the pooh rubber and pencil.
Very very rare to have anything other than a home party with pass the parcel etc, very occassionally someone would have a MacDonalds party.

I'm 41 and I remember party bags! A piece of cake and a few sweets usually. I also remember looking forward to getting one - it was a nice end to a lovely party. I do not see the harm in them.

prettybird · 30/08/2006 10:15

I'm 45 and can only remember getting pieces of cake wrapped in tissue paper.

Like Coolmamma, there wuold also have been a coule of prizes from the party games.

Lived in a "nice" middle class area, so money wasn't too much of an issue - although people had kids younger then, so were earlier in their careers, and maybe didn't have that much disposible income.

oooh and a balloon, of course!

Furball · 30/08/2006 10:24

40 in a few weeks [sniff] and just cake in a napkin

ghosty · 30/08/2006 10:25

I am 36. We weren't poor. We didn't have party bags ... but did bring a bit of cake home wrapped in a piece of soggy napkin.

Flamesparrow · 30/08/2006 10:26

25, and yes, I did. Pretty much slice of cake in napkin and a balloon though.

pablopatito · 30/08/2006 10:27
  1. I think, from memory: Mr Men pencil top. Piece of cake. Balloon. Rubber. Pencil.

Occasionaly I'd get a pencil with a rubber in the top (very, very exciting!)

Elibean · 30/08/2006 14:50

I'm 46 (MB, old?? don't you dare!) and as far as I can remember it was a balloon. Cake got eaten at the party, always.

Some people gave a small gift like bubble mixture with the balloon, mostly because some kids had 'won things' to take home and others didn't.

IdrisTheDragon · 30/08/2006 14:50

I am 30 (very nearly 31) and we always had party bags. Piece of cake wrapped up in a pretty napkin and some sweets. Don't remember anything else in them.

iota · 30/08/2006 14:53

gawd I'm over 40 too and I don't even remember going to that many parties yet alone getting party bags. I certainly didn't have a party every year

roisin · 30/08/2006 15:04

I'm 37, never had party bags. We had cake in napkin to take home.

Most children had parties only for their 6th and 7th birthdays too, and they were all at home
Pre-school birthdays (i.e. 3,4, and 5 were just for very close family); older birthdays would be taking one friend with you for a treat (ice skating, or swimming, or the cinema)
A few people had discos for their 11th birthdays - usually big, joint party affairs. (I didn't!)

desperateSCOUSEwife · 30/08/2006 15:09

I was brought up in the black and white days
according to my kids

I am 39 and remember a slice of cake is a grease stained (from the icing) napkin

Gobbledigook · 30/08/2006 15:09

ditto roisin - i can only remember having one or two parties and I'm sure I was around that age. It was definitely at home too and there was no stress about what food to do either - some sandwiches (usually white bread), crisps, party circle biscuits/jammie dodgers, jelly and ice cream in those little paper dishes with red or yellow frilly edges. No sign of grapes or carrot sticks at my party!!

Gobbledigook · 30/08/2006 15:10

I am 33.

Smurfgirl · 30/08/2006 15:11

Always. I am 22. Usually had some little sweets, a piece of cake and little cheapie toys in.
