As it says really! 2nd birthday coming up and dithering between the two - tell me which I should get! We live in the countryside of that makes any difference at all.

How tall is your child? My nearly 2 yo is not quite big enough for a scooter, but has a scuttlebug she loves. I think I would go for the scooter over the bike, and save bike for Christmas or third birthday though. Our plan is scooter for Christmas and balance bike or bike with stabilisers for third birthday, as that is what we did for ds!

Mini micro now, balance bike for Christmas I reckon.

Dd has a mini micro (comes with a seat attachment) which she loves. Not sure when we'll take the seat bit off though.

PassTheCremeEggs · 26/04/2014 20:04

She's tall - 95th centile. I suspect she'd get the hang of the balance bike quicker, but she has a habit of downing tools mid walk and if I have to carry something home I'd probably rather it was the scooter!

Mine have never had scooters and always bikes so I'll put a vote in for that!

They've all started on balance bikes at 18 months to 2 years and have been given pedal bikes for 4th birthdays.

RandomMess · 26/04/2014 20:06

Scooter, more versatile as easy for the parent to lug around!

BertieBotts · 26/04/2014 20:06

Balance bike now, scooter closer to 4 IME :)

Balance bike because they are better for rough countryside terrain - where would your child ride the scooter?

Make sure you choose one small enough for a 2 year old as some are a bit bigger.

ChazzerChaser · 26/04/2014 20:09

Toddlebike. It's a balance bike for little ones. Very light and easily carried if necessary.

Cross pots, should be easier to choose as she is tall. Good balance bikes are light and easy to carry :)

cross post! not cross pots! Grin

I think to some extent it depends what your DD takes to. My DS was great on the mini micro he got at 2.2 from day 1 and went confidently onto a Sprite (2 wheels) at 3.5.

He got a balance bike for 3rd birthday but only just gained his confidence on it at 3.8 and now has a pedal bike with stabilisers which he much prefers. Balance bike was just never his thing.

bakingtins · 26/04/2014 20:15

Balance bike with pneumatic tyres if you are in the country. Micro scooters have solid wheels, no good off roading. My children were on balance bikes at two, scooters at three, pedal bikes at 3.5. I think longer term having both is good if the other is an option for Christmas or from grandparents though. We scoot to school and bikes for the park/dog walking/ cycle track.
We have an Early Rider Lite which is suitable from 20m, other recommendations from similar threads are Islabike Rothan, Puky or Frog balance bikes.

OneTwoOrThree · 26/04/2014 20:16

My youngest got a mini micro scooter for Christmas at 21 months. No seat needed and within a month he was flying. He's so fast now I have to run to keep up! Got him a balance bike a month ago, which he's not overly interested in, but will get there in his own time I'm sure.

Scooter much much easier to carry, and also easy to push him on if he's tired. I vote scooter!

CinnamonPlums · 26/04/2014 20:17

Yes we had the puky which is great it comes with a carry strap if you need it. I always just hooked it over the handle of the buggy though it's very light and easy.

It's lasted well through 3 kids too.

Yika · 26/04/2014 20:19

I gave my DD a mini micro at 2 but she didn't really get the hang of it till nearly 3. Agree with others that it's only good on smooth surfaces.

BikeRunSki · 26/04/2014 20:21

Mine both got (the same) a balance bike for their 2nd birthdays. It was a massive hit. At 3.5 ds was riding a bike with pedals in under an hour. Dd is still oh 2! They also gave scooters but favour bikes; faster and more freedom I guess.

PassTheCremeEggs · 26/04/2014 22:32

Oh god, it's about an even split isn't it! When I said we live in the countryside I meant as opposed to in a town - we still have plenty of pavements around and quiet roads, loads of places to scoot. But still totally undecided!

the balance bike - best thing we ever bought for our current toddler. He LOVES it and got the hang of it very quickly. Scooters require a bit more coordination.

LoveSardines · 26/04/2014 22:40

Scooter. Ours both had one from 2 and they loved them. Also brilliant is that if they get tired you can get them to stand on it and pull them along which is really handy!

Stars66 · 26/04/2014 22:48

I have no answer just shamelessly watching for feedback as we are planning on getting dd one or the other for her 2nd bday tooGrin

whatcolour · 26/04/2014 22:52

Mine both had both. Balance bike at 2 = pedal bike (never have stabilisers) by 3.5 which is brilliant for school nursery run, as so fast.... Although do not buy one and never use it, which a lot of people seem to do !!! Scooters are brilliant too though - and easier to carry lol

FairyPenguin · 26/04/2014 22:53

We have a FirstBike - extremely light and DS was tall enough for that before he could get on a scooter safely (he had to reach up to the handlebars which was not safe).

He loves the FirstBike and has more confidence on it as he puts both feet down to stop whereas a scooter is just one foot.

whatcolour · 27/04/2014 08:02

The decathlon £30 ones are brilliant and very light. Tons of kids near us have them
