KFC - Should they warm up baby bottles?

YummyMummyBear · 17/08/2006 22:43

I went shopping today with my son and feeding time came and the screams began! I rushed into the first establishment i came across KFC. I asked for some warm water to heat up his bottle but was told that they couldnt do that. I then asked them if they could warm up the bottle for me (i have done this before in mcdonalds) and they also refused. The lady bluntly told me that there was a sign saying that they would not provide this service. There was cleary no signs up - i wouldnt have gone in if there was! I then asked for a cup of tea - i was just gonna stick the bottle in it - she again refused saying she could not give it to me as i was going to warm a bottle up in it!!! Surely its a human right to feed your child... i was really annoyed! The place was empty and they could have just heated it up for me

what do you think?

I know that I've been to places where they won't do the bottle warming for you as a health and safety thing bu they do usually provide you with warm water so you can do it yourslef - can't beleive they were so unreasonable!!!!

Squarer · 17/08/2006 22:45

I think you should go to John Lewis next time. They employ staff with brains.

no they shouldn't do it, if it was too hot they would be responsible.

They have signs up under the menu's behind the tills in our local KFC. (which i don';t think sells tea actually!) The issue with giving out hot water is that people can be scalded if that water is then left on the table and knocked over.

I used to take out hot water in a flask

Frizbe · 17/08/2006 22:47

Not all the time squarer, they employed my ex remember!!
So is this a KFC boycott then?

swedishmum · 17/08/2006 23:02

I thought the reason they warmed it up behind the counter was because of scalding type problems. Do as I did - all my 4 had to get used to cold/room temp milk as I needed them to be portable. If it's such a big issue for you then I'd agree with carrying a small flask for emergencies (or having a blueprint of your town in your head as you need to for potty training).

emmaeris · 17/08/2006 23:17

it is a bit strange seeing as they serve food there.
however, it's unfair to be rude about it really.. if the staff there have been told they cannot do it.. for whatever reasons they cant do it.
Still stupid though. But the bigwigs of kfcs fault

YummyMummyBear · 18/08/2006 08:58

I agree that the water left on the table is a problem but McDonalds have comprimised and do it for you - handing it back a few times so you can check the temp...

Like i said the place was empty and she could see how stressed and upset both i and my baby was!

I bought a wide necked flask for heating dd's milk. fill it 3/4 then when needed pop bottle in close lid and milk took very little time to warm, much less than with a jug of hot water. I knew that lots of places wouldnt heat bottles anyway so I never bothered asking.

KathyMCMLXXII · 18/08/2006 09:15

Not giving you the cup of tea is so jobsworth - she could have said 'You're not going to warm up your bottle in it, right?' and winked as she said it.

Thomcat · 18/08/2006 09:18

I found this too with DD1 which is why I then started to get her used to room temp or cold milk.
I also bought one of those avent bags that keeps milk warm for 4 hours.

YummyMummyBear · 18/08/2006 09:18

Thats what i though KathyMCMLXXII, it was a middle aged women and i was on the brink of tears. I am a new mum and thought that everyone would warm up bottles. I will be trying that flask idea alligator

No one will do it in London tbh because of the fear of being sued as they could a) heat the bottle to far too hot and burn your baby and b) if they give you water you could knock it over and scald yourself. Either way you could sue them. The answer is to buy a thermos I'm afraid! John Lewis does a good one (in the baby section) that has a lid big enough to float the bottle in to warm it. Otherwise go to Mothercare/Debenhams/John Lewis parents room where there is usually a bottle warmer.

Bibliophile · 18/08/2006 16:09

The cup of tea thing is OUTRAGEOUS! So bloody rude and officious. Would make my blood boil.

olivia35 · 18/08/2006 16:33

You don't use BOILING water to heat bottles do you? Or do you? (I wouldn't know, mine are bf or have bottles at room temp or indeed out the fridge).

Unless it's, like, lava temperature, I don't see why a cup of hottish water left on a table is any more of a H&S issue than a cup of coffee. Do they not sell hot drinks at all?

All sounds very jobsworth.

nappyaddict · 30/08/2006 00:26

i work in a restaurant and we are not allowed to take boiling hot water over to a customer to warm a bottle themselves incase they knock it over. we are allowed to warm it up and then have to get the guest to check the temperature.

wannaBe1974 · 30/08/2006 12:26

this is not uncommon, and it's not limited to kfc. I remember wanting a bottle to be warmed up for ds in one of those cafe's on a reilway station and they wouldn't do it either, and that was nearly 4 years ago.

expatinscotland · 30/08/2006 12:34

NO! They're a fast food restaurant, not a hotel, nursery or childcare provider.

They probably have to abide by health and safety rules which don't allow them to OR their insurance provider restricts them.

SoupDragon · 30/08/2006 12:39

I don't think they are obliged to warm a bottle up for you nor provide you with a jug of potentially scalding hot water to do it - especially if you weren't eating in there!

However, not selling you a cup of tea or other hot drink is just plain daft.

On the rare occasions DSs had a bottle when out they had it at whatever temperature it was at. Ditto for babyfood. It is far easier if you can get your baby to accept it.

bundle · 30/08/2006 12:41

never warmed up bottles and never go to KFC
