what lullabies do you sing?

I'm Irish living in England and, unfortunately, the only songs I know that sound remotely like a lullaby are Irish rebel songs! It's fine at the mo cos he doesn't understand them but I wanna get out of the habit before he starts asking questions! Problem is, when I sing other stuff he doesn't like it and starts whinging. He's completely fascinated by the fields of athenry and if I sing anything less than all three verses and choruses he whinges! He just goes into a trance with them! I need to have a few other back up songs in my head Grin

Sorry, I know this is an odd one lol.

I already try you are my sunshine and I see the moon but to no avail Grin

Not a bad idea about changing the words though... Problem is i have limited songs and this old dog doesn't learn new ones easily lol so I'm hoping for songs I recognise to pop up. I will have to look up some of these ones though! Motowns not a bad idea... Might try dock of the bay and these arms of mine!

I think it becomes obvious which songs I enjoy singing cos I belt them out and that might be why it grabs him more!

Ds is 2.5yo and has always had
Twinkle twinkle (I recently looked up all the verses for a bit of variation!)
Rockabye baby
Mockingbird
I see the moon

If he's feeling too awake he joins in...

Frere Jaques
The path to the moon
My favourite things

If you look up Putumayo lullabies on YouTube there are some lovely ones from around the world, especially some gorgeous African ones. I sing one to ds but have no idea what it means!!

My mother used to sing Irish rebel songs to us too. I now sing them to mine Grin

One lullaby she sang, and I sing to my four is this - and my four year old refuses to go to sleep without his 'Alibi' -

Go to sleep, little one
And we'll take a walk,
And we'll fly through the sky
To a faraway land.
There'll be little Jack Horner
And little boy blue.
And the little old lady who lived in a shoe
Little bo peep will be counting her sheep
If you just close your eyes, little one
Go to sleep.

She also sang a random Irish song about a mother killing her child and then being hung for it. I've never heard anyone else sing it and google has came up with nothing.

It is, I can remember it word for word too. I'd love to know the proper story behind it, but sadly my mother isn't here to ask any more.

I used to sing folk songs when mine were babies - Waters of Tyne was a favourite.

Then my DD saw The Wizard of Oz and requested I sing Somewhere Over the Rainbow every night for the next 2 years.

More recently they saw Mary Poppins and now they want Feed The Birds and Stay Awake every night! I'm still learning them but they are beautiful songs and I don't mind.

I sing (to the tune of "mama's gonna buy you a mockingbird");
Hush little baby Mummy's here
To soothe your brow and calm your fears
To kiss your cheek and hold your hand
Till you drift off to sleepy land
To help you count those little white sheep
And sing you songs till you're asleep
To tell you tales of kings and queens
Jack and Jill and wonderful things
So snuggle up and hug me tight
And dream sweet dreams all through the night
Cos every night the sun goes down
Your still the best babe in the whole town

They still ask for it now aged 9!!

Oh Fred The Toad,
Oh Fred The Toad,
Why are you lying in the road?
x2

Did you not see
That truck ahead?
That came along
And squashed your head?

Oh Fred The Toad,
Oh Fred The Toad,
Why are you lying in the road?

She's 6mo. When do you reckon I need to stop singing that one?

I really need to teach my son some lullabies and nursery rhymes, he was singing Pharell Williams 'Happy' as he was going to sleep!

misty I made myself learn it 9 years ago too when I realised I knew no lullabies at all. After some mums netting research I found it and loved it!

DP sings, "You'll Never Walk Alone" to dd. He swears she loves it.

I'm a Twinkle Twinkle lover, myself. All the verses.

I sing lots of random stuff to her, though. I was singing, "Take me Home,Country Roads" earlier and she started doing this little jiggy, sitting down dance to it. She's 10mo.

A John Denver fan, it seems!

What a great thread! It's reminded me of songs I'd forgotten and I have just been sat looking up lyrics and singing away to myself! Definitely going to remember when a knight.

My reportorial is Yellow Bird (Calypso version with my own verse in there)
Dream a little Dream
Twinkle twinkle
Wind the bobbin up
3 little men in a flying saucer
Mr Sandman
Twinkle Twinkle chocolate bar
Away in a manger (replacing baby Jesus for baby DD)
Rock a bye baby replacing baby for dd and including sudden pretend drop (she's 3 and loves it)

Used to sing 'over the sea to Skye' but now know that is about Bonnie Prince Charlie, so a bit rebelly.

Johnny Todd - because it has loads of verses

Postman Pat

Puff the magic Dragon
