babies close in age - need a double buggy?

I was just wondering at what age most children stop needing to be put in a buggy. i was thinking about trying for another baby in a year or so which would mean there would be just over 2 yr gap.
The thought of manoeuvering a double buggy is a bit off putting!!!

my 2 dd's are 24 months apart

i got a buggy board and it worked out perfect. hated the idea of a double buggy. i got one of the buggy boards that dd1 could sit down on, she even fell asleep there a few times!

she was also very good and walked quite a lot, only using the buggy board when she was tired really

would recommend one

Mine are 22 months apart and I had the same problem as cat23 that the oldest one wanted to be pushed even though she was physically capable. For 5 months or so, I wouldn't have wanted to face a day without it. It was also great for long days out when the oldest would have genuine need for a rest. I took the bar off the front and the eldest came and went as she pleased. I loved mine.
If your gap is going to be a bit bigger, then maybe you won't need one. There is not a clip that will turn two buggies into a double, and a second seat that kind of clips to your main pushchair which you might want to check out. That said, I've seen double buggies on kiddicare.com for about £100 and if you can get a good second hand one, then it might be a good way to go.

25 month gap. Never used one - just a normal (standing) buggy board. Don't go out for long days by public transport though. Think i would for a gap of

Nemo1977 · 27/07/2006 21:03

I bought a double for ds and dd as ds was 2.2yrs when dd was born. However have only used it a handful of times as ds prefers to walk now. I will have a 13mth age gap between dd and db so the double will get some use..lol

hotmama · 27/07/2006 21:04

There is 16 months between my dd's- so dd1 was too young to use a buggy board - which was the original plan - but dd2 came earlier then planned (or not)

I have a Phil & Ted - not cheap - so it depends on your financial situation. I think it is fab and doesn't take as much room as a 'traditional' double buggy - bonus it can be used as a single or a double.

zubb · 27/07/2006 21:05

I have 2 22 month gaps and have never had a double buggy. The 22 month old has just had to walk or sit on the front of the pushchair (didn't have a buggy board) but at weekend dh was always around to carry on his shoulders if one was tired, and during the week we didn't walk miles - just little walks of up to 20 minutes.

glassofwine · 27/07/2006 21:12

2 yrs 3 months between DD's, I got DD1 walking everywhere a couple of months before DD2 was born and bought a new buggy for DD2 so that DD1 didn't feel it was hers - all went ok, felt smug about not having a double buggy.

Then fell pg again quickly, only 11 months between DS1 and DD2 so had to have a buggy, yes they are a bit of a nightmare.

hunkermunker · 27/07/2006 21:17

If you don't want a double, buy a sling for the baby (not a baby carrier, a proper sling - ring, pouch or wrap).

glassofwine · 27/07/2006 21:31

Also - just remembered that I had a lot of problems with the older one biting the younger one when he was newborn and then the other way around when he got a bit older. So happy to be past that phase now.

WestCountryLass · 27/07/2006 22:16

I am debating getting a double buggy. DD will be 2.9 when baby arrives but we will have to do the school run twice as well as drop her off at nursery when she is 3 so that is three trips to the school and I am thinking it is a lot to expect her to walk there and back that many times every day and there is no way I can push her on a buggyboard up my hill as my pushchairs wheels don't steer with her weight on it now!

spots · 27/07/2006 22:24

As someone who didn't want to get a double buggy (baby in sling, 23 month old in single buggy I thought) here are the reasons I love mine:

  • DD1 loves it because it feels like driving a car and she is willing to sit there rather than 'walk' everywhere which takes AGES.

  • DD1 actually will fall asleep in it at an age when she is unwilling to nap in bed.

  • DD2 gets very hot in sling and I get hot wearing her (I know this isn't an issue for you squashymate but worth noting in case anyone else reading this is interested) and it makes a nice change.

  • There's a nice sort of companionship between them sitting there side by side.

  • It's actually very glide-y and easy to steer and I feel nice pushing it.

  • It was only £50 second hand! Worth every penny.

apronstrings · 27/07/2006 22:27

I think it depends so much on the children and your circumstances - how much walking you want or need to do and your expectations for your children - dd1 was only 2.2 but quite happy to wallk. Ds2 was 3 and could not make the walk to school to get the older children from school - was just not in any way up to walking on the days h went to nursery - so I ended up having to get one when he was about 3 and 4 months!

Angeliz · 27/07/2006 22:31

We are going to check this one out next week.
DD2 will be 17-18 months when baby arrives. I loved the big Emmaljunga but dd2 doesn't like being in the buggy to start with so this seemed a bit more lightweight and not quite as pricey.
I love the fact that when they're a wee bit older they'll be able to face each other (from the side) and also the carrycot thing for the newborn stage. My main criteria though was that it faces me, which is a rarity i've found with double buggies.

hunkermunker · 27/07/2006 22:46

Can I just say that I do also have a double buggy, not just a sling - it's only a Maclaren Rally Twin though, nothing fancy - but the DSs look very sweet in it.

apronstrings · 28/07/2006 03:15

angeliz as a self confessed pramoholic i have to say i think that looks really great- when you've been to check it out be sure to let us know what its like!

squashymate · 28/07/2006 11:49

Angeliz - that's the best looking double bugggy i've ever seen - looks like a double bugaboo! How much do they cost? and do you know where you can buy them?

WestCountryLass · 28/07/2006 12:50

That buggy is amazing but I fear it would be too wide for the narrow village paths I will have to use, I am just going to get this I think:

www.toysrus.co.uk/Product.aspx/BruHome/BruTravel/BruTravelPushchairs/BruTravelPushchairsTwin/709972

Cos its cheap and cheerful!

burstingbug · 28/07/2006 13:15

I brought this . for my ds(17mths) and new baby(due 13 days)

PetitFilou1 · 28/07/2006 13:40

My ds is 2.6 (just about) and goes everywhere on the buggy board - probably has done for the last three months or so. Earlier than that he still needed a buggy. I'll sell you our maclaren twin traveller for not very much if you want it! Dd and ds were 19 months apart so I used it for about 6 months.

Angeliz · 28/07/2006 18:04

Well there are a few on online stores i've found out this morning but not in red yet. I have to wait a few weeks for the red one.
It is adorable isn't it. Apparently it fits through standard doors and isn't that big. Someone on here recomended it actually
It isn't in shops yet, only on order. Very new.

apronstrings · 28/07/2006 18:13

I'll have to have another baby...

squashymate · 28/07/2006 22:26

Angeliz, any idea how much it costs?

OP posts:
Angeliz · 28/07/2006 22:43

Well it's here for 329. It varies from site to site.
We ordered it here and then they rang and said they wouldn't have red till the end of August (when baby is due) so we're trying to get it sooner.
No joy so far but if anyone else finds it sooner do let me know
apronstrings, go on go on go on, you know you want to!

burstingbug · 28/07/2006 22:54
