nail varnish on young children!!

my dp's 4 and 2 year old dd's come to use every friday with nail varnish on.

Personally I don't like it and dp dosen't either.
He keeps threatening to wash it off and have words with thier mum BUT although I don't particularly like it, I feel that we would be rocking the boat here, as he and his ex are getting on ok at the moment and I feel it would be petty.

what do you all think about nail varnish on little ones?

ahem, I think part of the objection now maybe that it is still considered 'chav' if not associated with dressing-up.

I would let them get on with it and not make it an issue...but if I was taking them to some sort of smart 'do' I would take it off, and then maybe put it back before sending them home.

I don't think it looks nice on young kids, but it is fun if they are dressing up, and doesn't do any harm, does it?

My dad used to tell me nail varnish takes the natural shine off your nails

SecurMummy · 07/07/2006 16:17

That's ok, I am in the clear then - DS is always in some kind of princess/ballerina costume and we never go anywhere posh anyway.

nail varnish does ruin your nails!

Piffle · 07/07/2006 16:18

MIL put it on dd one afternoon.
DD loved it, it was very pale shimmery lilac
Against my better instinct I did not mind it at all
But I have not put it on her since

Alan · 07/07/2006 16:18

how did your dad know greensleeves?

Greensleeves · 07/07/2006 16:19

I have no idea

I only let dd as part of dressing up, don't really like it personally, but don't see a big issue in it. she currently has pink clouds on since she was supposed to be a ballerina last friday!

my dd loves wearing nail varnish and sits like an angel to get it on both her finger and toe nails. I only ever use pale colours or clear sparkly stuff and she loves showing it off to whoever she meets. It doesnt do any harm and she gets enjoyment out of it. (shes 2.8years)

albosmum · 07/07/2006 20:26

ds1 loved having his nails done till he was about 5, even in recpetion he would have his toe nails done, choose the varnish and help me choose mine.
I think its fun

Charlottesweb · 07/07/2006 20:26

I wouldn't start something over their nails being painted. My dd is 4 and she has her toenails done all the time, they are a nice shade of violet at the minute thanks to her 5yr old cousin. But if she was going somewhere flash and wearing sandals I would remove it I think it's nice to teach them that they can look girly and nice

galaxy · 07/07/2006 20:27

I don't like it either but hey, we're all different

My boys often have their toes painted, they are 4 and 2.

BonyM · 07/07/2006 21:32

I don't like it, and have the opposite problem - dd1 (8) frequently comes back from spending time with her father and his wife with varnish on her nails.

She knows I don't approve though and it perfectly happy for me to take it off when she gets home.

Am I a spoilsport?

I suppose I view it as make-up and therefore not something that little girls need in order to be gorgeous!

nooka · 07/07/2006 21:33

My two (7 and 5) like to do this, but generally I only let them do their toes, especially ds, as I think he might get teased (probably against the school rules anyway). It is the only girly thing they get to do, as I don't wear make up. But I am quite careful about the colours that they use. Frankly it is much less hassle than face painting!

hulababy · 07/07/2006 21:35

I am not keen, however, we do allow 4yo DD to have a little pale nail varnish on at a weekend IF she has not bitten her nails during the week. She actually does see it as an incentive and is not currently biting her nails aymore. We have the Barbie nail varnish which actually rubs off within the day - it is never still on by bedtime!

Have to admit too that on holiday recently she had normal pale pnk arnish on her toe nails (not fingers) as she and my mum did it together (bth of their feet) as a girly thing, and enjoyed it. Did no harm.

Wouldn't let her goto school/nursery with it onthough. And she wears no other marke up other than at dress up time in the house.

Hattie05 · 07/07/2006 21:50

Compared to any other 'grown up' type thing children can do e.g. tarty clothes and make up, i think nail varnish is pretty low on the scale.

My dd often paints her toes when i do mine - sometimes she does her fingers too. I can't say it bothers me in the slightest, she uses mine so its on bright garish shades or anything. She is 3.5 btw.

Its a far cry from having a face full of make up and mini skirts on.

juuule · 07/07/2006 23:00

I don't like it but...dds (8y and 9y) love putting it on 6yo and 3yo. 6yo and 3yo think they look gorgeous so I don't have the heart to stop them dressing up and using it. However, I do draw the line at eyeshadow as it usually gives them sore eyes. So that's a big no-no.

DumbledoresGirl · 07/07/2006 23:01

My 6 yo dd had her nails painted at her school fair this evening. I don't have a probelm with that, whihc is odd as i have a problem with all make up at other times...

harrisey · 08/07/2006 10:35

I dont mind as long as its weekends/holidays. All 3 of mine (2dds and ds) have pink sparkly toenails just now!

trinityrhino · 08/07/2006 10:42

my 6 year yr old loves it and I let her once in a while on the weekend or in holiday time
