nail varnish on young children!!

my dp's 4 and 2 year old dd's come to use every friday with nail varnish on.

Personally I don't like it and dp dosen't either.
He keeps threatening to wash it off and have words with thier mum BUT although I don't particularly like it, I feel that we would be rocking the boat here, as he and his ex are getting on ok at the moment and I feel it would be petty.

what do you all think about nail varnish on little ones?

Not got a problem with it myself

iamapieceofcheesecake · 07/07/2006 15:23

I don't think it's too bad if it's light, you know like baby pink or something along those lines. Nothing too overpowering tho, like barbie pink or red!
Maybe if it's too bright you could drop some hints about toning it down a little, or buying them some clear or light nail varnish?

Tis only nail varnish.Where's the harm?Choose your battles I think.
(give it a year and school may well put a stop to it anyway.)
My ds2 loves having nail varnish on his toes.

mazzystar · 07/07/2006 15:25

on the whole i don't like it ( no-brainer really) but i must confess that my DS (20 months) has pinky gold big toenails today - he saw me doing mine and INSISTED.

i think its a delicate one situation, here though. i think your dp should only mention it if he can explain precisely why he doesn't like it and do so in a calm and articulate manner!

JessaJam · 07/07/2006 15:26

don't like it personally. But it would probably be petty to start a row over it.

Bet the little girls love it! Is is specially for the weekend?

gettingthere · 07/07/2006 15:26

My dd's like to have 'girly nights' where we have fun putting nail varnish on each other. I usually come off the worst!!!

sheepgomeep · 07/07/2006 15:26

it's not that noticeable really on the younger one but you really notice on the oldest dd,

I dunno

Used to disapprove until I had dd...now think it is harmless fun

aragon · 07/07/2006 15:27

Too silly an issue to get into a row over. They're little girls and they probably love it even if their Dad doesn't. Most kids like playing around with pretending to be grown up - and lets be honest - there are much worse things to experiment and play with.

iamapieceofcheesecake · 07/07/2006 15:28

ps sheepgomeep = excellant name!!

sheepgomeep · 07/07/2006 15:30

I think the girls do love it and although I don't really like it they do look really sweet . I think my dp dosen't like because they have it ona lot of the time, the ex sends her to nursery with nail varnish on, We do see them sometimes in the week and they have it on then as well.

saying that I do remember painting my ds nail once, my ex was horrified

OP posts:
zippitippitoes · 07/07/2006 15:30

I think it's quite sweet I used to have it then and don't now!

Alan · 07/07/2006 15:33

mine are 6 and 4 and like having it on (4yr old is a boy aswell) i reckon his ex puts it on to keep them quiet because they see her doing it and want some on theirselves
so yes it would be petty to say something

Sugarmagnolia · 07/07/2006 15:55

I don't particularly like it either and before I had my own kids I was under the impression that people who put nail varnish on children were trying to make them look grown up - like little ones with pierced ears. Not very nice. However....since having my own I have discovered that you do it because they love it and it really is pretty harmless at the end of the day. I just try to keep the colours really light so it's not too noticeable.

niceglasses · 07/07/2006 15:58

My ds (4)loves it and I put it on whenever I'm putting it on myself - and my dd (2). Its usually all smudgy and mudgy with bits of fluff. I think its sweet and they love showing it off. Hardly a biggie is it?

spidermama · 07/07/2006 15:58

I don't mind it because I know how much they love it. It seems petty to make a fuss.

spidermama · 07/07/2006 15:58

Ahhhh niceglasses. My ds (also 4) loves it too.

MrsBadger · 07/07/2006 16:01

can you still get that Tinkerbell peel-off stuff? that was the height of sophistication when I was little...

SecurMummy · 07/07/2006 16:02

dd1 and 2 (10 and 8) have regular girly evenings with me - and they play at girly evenings with ds and dd3 (4 and 2) so all of my children regularly wear nail varnish and they love it - DS likes anything as long as it is bright pink or purple (or both on alternate nails is good )

It is harmless fun IMO - why curb their asthetic side!

LadyTophamHatt · 07/07/2006 16:04

DS3 has painted toenails whenever I do mine.

Actually even if I haven't got mine painted he'll ask why and then if he can have some.

Marne · 07/07/2006 16:07

My dd1 has her toes done when i do mine, i dont do her finger nails though, she will only let me cut her toe nails if i paint them after

SecurMummy · 07/07/2006 16:07

just realised - in teh early 90's this was considered Chav wasn't it? (or the 90's equivelent anyway)

Does that mean Chav has become main streem - will we all be handing out sausage rolls in 10 years time???

arfishymeau · 07/07/2006 16:11

I always distract DD when she asks to paint her nails by getting her to paint DPs toenails.

sugarfree · 07/07/2006 16:11

It's also the type of thing that if someone told me not to do,particularly Dh,I would do it all the more just to be annoying.
