Have you spoken to any of the staff about working with them?

Do I remember you from an abortion thread? You were very articulate. What were you studying?

monkeytrousers · 04/07/2006 22:22

Sorry - X-posted.

moondog · 04/07/2006 22:24

There is a website that lists all sorts of funding, from the sublime to the ridiculous.
Only problem is,I can't remember what it is called. Aaarggh!! Could you Google????

When I trained as a SALT at p/g level,I was literally the only one out of about 60 people with sponsorship (as i speak Welsh and Welsh speakers desperately needed).
All my mates were experts at finding odd sums that were payable t one legged red headed girls called Jane born in Kentish villages between 1965 and 1980,that sort of thing.

You'd be amazed at what is out there.

monkeytrousers · 04/07/2006 22:25

Becky how did you find about about studentships?

OP posts:
Scumster · 04/07/2006 22:25

Ok... So is the MAIN source of your worry:

  1. you wanted to do more studying and now you can't afford to or
  2. you were relying on the studentship to contribute to the mortgage on your new house?
hulababy · 04/07/2006 22:25

Congratulations on your excellent results MT. I know you are disappointed over the studentship, but really that is a great result and you derve loads of praise. IMO your DP should be the one first in line offering it though and I feel veyr for you that he isn't.

LadyTamba · 04/07/2006 22:25

Well done MT

(admittidly I have no idea what the gradings mean etc but I am sure you did really well and have a bright future ahead of you )

beckybrastraps · 04/07/2006 22:33

Well, it was a LONG time ago, and things are probably different now, but I wrote to the people I was interested in working with directly. Some had studentships available, some didn't.

Tortington · 04/07/2006 22:33

jesus christ how can you possibly be dissapointed - your dh is an arse - he should be overjoyed - bloody well done you

beckybrastraps · 04/07/2006 22:36

I'm also starting to investigate funding possibilities for what I want to do when I've finished this degree, and often if you approach a department, they will have ideas about funding.

expatinscotland · 04/07/2006 22:42

VERY well done, MT! Good on you!

BIG congrats to you

monkeytrousers · 04/07/2006 22:51

DevilsAdvocado · 04/07/2006 23:19

Bloody hell!!!! WELL DONE YOU!!!!!!!!!!

and tell your DH to bend over to I kick his hairy arse!

Excellent!!!! 2.1 is a bloody fantastic result!!!

Ellbell · 05/07/2006 00:21

Monkeytrousers... First and foremost CONGRATULATIONS. You've done really well and I'm with the others who think your dp is well out of order!

Secondly... about the studentship... Is it a 'local' studentship, i.e. based within your own department or institution? Is a First actually a prerequisite or are you just assuming that you'll need a First to compete with other applicants? Have you applied to the AHRC? It's not unknown for the AHRC to give studentships to people with 2.1s (though obviously it's more unusual - they have to weed people out somehow)- much will depend on your proposal and how much they like it, and on your references. You should also bear in mind that if you have applied for an internal scholarship, you may end up on a waiting list - but the people above you may be the people with Firsts, who may be successful in getting funding from other bodies (AHRC or whatever), so you may move up the list come August, when the AHRC results are out. All is not lost! There will definitely be other things you can apply for, though probably not now for next academic year. You may have to consider taking a year away from it and reapplying for next year. I don't know your circs, but you might consider applying to the Wingate Foundation (here ) who actively encourage applications from mature students and those from 'non-traditional' educational backgrounds. You should also definitely consider looking at other universities (if there are others local to you) to see if they offer anything suitable. I think that there may also be money specifically targetted at the interface between the arts and the sciences (Wellcome Foundation?) which you might explore. Don't give up...!

And CONGRATULATIONS again... When do you graduate? I get to call out the names of graduands this year and am dead nervous. I'm sure I will fall off the stage or doff my cap and not be able to get it back on my head or drop my list of names or something....

GinSoakedHarridan · 05/07/2006 00:28

What did your dp get in his degree?

Fantastic for you, well done.

Papillon · 05/07/2006 06:24
