What's it like bringing up 2 girls?

Hi - I have 2 daughters- 2.3yrs and a 5 week old. Having not had a sister myself, I was wondering if others out there who have had a sister or who have raised 2 or more girls, if they have any tips/advice for me? I am imagining all sorts of issues from sharing clothes/fighting over makeup when older/jealousy over boyfriends/will there be loads of arguments between me and them when they are teenagers - you know - the mother-daughter sort(sons aren't supposed to have those classic teen rows with their mothers are they?) etc etc. I would like to know the worst of it and also the good points too. I am hoping that because they are same sex, they may have more common interests and perhaps be closer? Also, are girls easier to bring up than boys or is this a myth. Thanks in advance!

earlycomps - I have 2 dds (17 and 14) with 2yrs10mths between them in age. You will love it.... I promise you. I have always actively encouraged them to get on well and they do!! Of course, they fight from time to time, but even at this age, they sometimes get in bed together and just lie there and chat!!

You will need lots of cash for all the feminine products - when I go shopping for tampax and STs, I'm buying for 3 and my supermkt trolley looks ridiculous.... They don't borrow stuff from each other that much but I will say at this age the house is noisy! Lots of shouting and hormones...all very up and down and volatile.

They are both very different in temperament but it just seems to work and they really care about each other - I feel so lucky sometimes...

The youngest is very switched on and streetwise which comes from having an older sister. Compared to her friends who are the eldest in the family, she seems so much more mature...

You will love it....

helliebean I agree with you that the second one is much more streetwise. My DD2 is already a bit like that at 6. She does a lot more than I ever would have let DD1 do at that age. eg She goes to the park with DD1 and her friends.

She also seems a lot more independent than some of her friends who are first children too

  • or is that just because I don't have the time to worry about her as much as they do their kids!!
