Is my baby too heavy?

Ok. I admit. Haven't taken her to the HV since she was 6 months old. She's thriving. Happy little thing.

Anyway. Got out the scales this morning, weighed me first and then me and her together. I think she weighs 23lbs. According to the red book charts, she is 91st percentile!!! Shock

She was only 6lb born (although she was early) and was only 8lb 2 when she was 9 weeks.

She doesn't look particularly big to me. She's quite long. I'm just a bit Shock that if I do take her to the HV/Docs they're going to go, Hmm..she's big!

She has two 7oz milk bottles a day and 3 meals. Not really one for snacks. Lots of veg and protein really.

What do you lovely MN's think?? Time to start cutting her food, or just let her even out in time? (also panicking because my friend's 2 yr old is only 24 lbs!!!)

How long is she as well?

Regardless, I wouldn't start cutting out anything without express instructions form a health professional. She is still growing and to be honest, once she gets mobile you may well find that she will slow down her gaining dramatically and may even stop for a while.

Oceansurf · 14/10/2013 19:18

I'll have to measure her in the morning when she is awake! But she looks long! (compared to other babies her age I mean)

My dd was very similar. Leave her be. For gods sake don't put a baby on a diet. She sounds completely normal.

91st centile isn't necessary over! 1-100 is supposed to be 'normal'

BarberryRicePud · 14/10/2013 19:27

Weight doesn't mean much, it's how it varies over time. Give your hv a ring and get her length done too so you can see if she's in proportion.

How old is she?

Dd is 5.5m and 20lbs. 91st centile ish, always has been. 99.8th for length too. Actually she's growing out of 9-12m clothes. Kids come in all shapes and sizes!

See your hv to rule out a problem but likely to well within the norm.

Oceansurf · 14/10/2013 19:28

:( I know, I hate the idea of putting her on any kind of restricted diet! She eats healthily and I genuinely don't believe she eats too much.

It's just strange to hear friends who used to say 'Oh gosh she's tiny, you need to get more milk into her' now say, 'Goodness me, she's huge!'

It's me who has the issues, I know :(

Sorry, I didn't mention. She's one in a couple of weeks. Already in 12-18months clothes, some of which are small on her.

Is she walking? You may find her growth slows considerably in the next few months as she concentrates on moving.

Oceansurf · 14/10/2013 19:34

Good idea, will insist on her length being done. She should be due a one year check soon though I presume? So maybe it's done there?

Neither myself nor Dad are particularly tall (average I would say) but there are a lot of weight issues on DH's side of the family. Most are obese. I think that is where my worries are stemming from. Could she have inherited 'fat' genes? She certainly loves her food! I've never done the whole 'feed until they refuse'. I doubt she'd ever refuse! I mainly give her 2-3 tablespoons of food with sometimes a small fromage frais for a pudding. (all homecooked, the shop bought is too puree for her now)

Oh. She's crawling everywhere and standing up all the time. Walking with a walker and with support but not on her own yet.

My dd was six ten at birth. She was 27 lbs at a year. She's now two and has put on a grand total of five pounds in the last year. She was EBF to six months and I continued to bf until she was nearly two

Please please don't worry. She sounds delightful.

Chubfuddler · 14/10/2013 19:36

Very few people are overweight because of their genes. Famines who tend to bring overweight are mostly overweight because of their dietary habits, which are leRnrd behaviour.

She is fine. Honestly.

Xmasbaby11 · 14/10/2013 19:47

She'll probably lose weight when she starts walking around, as this takes up lots of energy. It sounds like she has great eating habits and is very healthy, so I honestly wouldn't worry.

DD is 21 mo and I have no clue what she weighes. I can tell my looking at her she's a healthy weight, and that's what counts.

neversleepagain · 14/10/2013 19:50

A rule of thumb is that a baby should double their birth weight by 6 months, triple it by 12 month and birth weight should increase by 4 by 2 years.

Babies come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. My girls were both 20lbs at 12 months and 50th centile.

I really wouldn't worry about it.

Mabelface · 14/10/2013 19:52

She's fine. You don't need to worry at all. Her eating will naturally slow down soon as her growth slows.

ilovepowerhoop · 14/10/2013 19:53

my ds was 21lbs at 23 weeks just before he started on solids and nothing was mentioned about his weight as he was also long and therefore in proportion

bundaberg · 14/10/2013 19:54

how old is she?

ds3 was almost 20lb at 5 months old! he's a perfectly normal 4 yr old now

gintastic · 14/10/2013 19:55

My 10mo clocked in at 22lbs4oz. HV was delighted as she was on the 91st, where she has been since birth.

She sounds lovely and cuddly to me, just like babies are supposed to be.

bundaberg · 14/10/2013 19:55

oh sorry, just re-read and seen she is nearly one.

her weight sounds fine, really!

if anything i'd say that 2 bottles doesn't seem much!

Xmasbaby11 · 14/10/2013 19:56

I wouldn't take into account the birth weight too much. DD took a year to double hers - but then she was 9 15!

Oceansurf · 14/10/2013 20:03

She is gorgeous! Grin I'm trying to look at her objectively and ask, is she too big. I don't think so. I've asked nursery, who said she was one of their bigger babies, but they'd seen plenty bigger and they didn't think she was overweight at all.

bunda Yes, it says 3 bottles at her age, but she just lost interest in the afternoon one so I dropped it. She does have cheese/yoghurt etc for the calcium, but she's well under on the amount of milk. She drinks a lot of water during the day though.

never you see on those rules, DD should only be 18lbs and then 24lbs at two years old! She'd have to only put on a pound in the next 12 months to hit that target!

She was on 25th percentile at birth..went up to about 50% at 4 months, then 75% at 6 months...it's the constant growing (up the scale I mean!) that worries me!

DS1 was 7lb at birth and until he was 2yo, along the 75th centile weight wise, 95th centile heightwise, was 26lb at 14mo, then when he could walk was solid muscle. Played rugby at Junior International level at 15yo.

DS2 was 8lb 10oz at birth and 60cm long. He was on the 95th centile for weight, off the scale for height. But he hardly grew at all until he was 2yo. Was about 15lb at 12mo, 20lb at 2yo. Then caught up and pegged 50th centile until he was 12yo, then grew to nearly 6'0" almost overnight. Confused He is now just above average height/weight.

DS3 was exactly on the 50th centile from birth until he was 5yo. He was about 18lb at 12mo. He is now at 14yo, nearly 6ft tall, skinny, size 11 feet, longer legs than DS2, he is going to be well over 6'.

If she is happy, healthy and moving around I wouldn't worry at all. They all grow at different rates x

Chubfuddler · 14/10/2013 20:23

Ocean my babies didn't seem to grow much in utero. They were perfectly healthy and both perfect 10s on the apger but pretty dinky for full term. They grew like topsy as babies and toddlers. My family used to joke that I put them in gro bags at night.

By all means speak to the HV if you're concerned but I really don't think you need to be.

Oceansurf · 14/10/2013 20:26

My mum keeps digging out the weight records for me, and I was 20lbs at one, so not that far off really. I was a pretty skinny child and weighed 9 stone til I got pregnant!

Thanks for the reassurance everyone. They're all different aren't they?
