My son (22months) loves books, some of his favourites include; each peach pear plum, hairy macklary, emperors new clothes, on the night you were born, what the ladybird saw, and a couple of cheap car/train books. He's totally obsessed with bikes and trains so suggestions with these would be great. We mainly read them together. The ones he prefers to read alone are more learning/picture books or books with sounds.

DD, about the same age, loves anything by Julia Donaldson, but particularly Room on the Broom and One Ted Fell Out of Bed, and anything by the Allberg's but especially Peepo - luckily I love that one too, though if I have to read Each Peach **ing Pear Plum another 8 times in a row I might go slightly insane...

Harry and His Bucketful of Dinosaurs is a new favourite and the Book People do all the books in one set for about £15, and for some reason she is absolutely addicted to I Took the Moon for a Walk, its the only library book I've felt the need to go out and buy.

wheredidiputit · 09/10/2013 15:09

DS at that age loved good night digger and just like Daddy which is a book about a sheepdog puppy copying his Daddy. Also the pictures are textured.

I found he like books that repeated phrases so he could 'read' also he liked the textured picture books.

Up2nogood · 09/10/2013 15:10

Yes we have a few more Julia Donaldson ones. He likes Tiddler too but not so much the gruffalo!! Will check out the others. I've almost bought room on a broom. Library!!! Of course. Last time we went he was under 18 mobths and just wanted to empty the books off the shelf. But there is a small
Library at the end if my street, I might pop in and look!

If you haven't got 'Bedtime Bear' that's a classic - one full of foldy out flaps which DS has torn most of and funny too.

His other favourite is one called 'Dinosaur Zoom' which has vehicles, dinosaurs, a surprise and a birthday, along with a rhythmic repetitive storyline, so it ticks all the boxes really.

ceeveebee · 09/10/2013 15:26

What the Ladybird heard, and We're Going on a Bear Hunt are the two most popular books in this house

saffstel · 09/10/2013 16:21

My dd likes the mr men

CalamityJones · 09/10/2013 16:25

Room on the Broom is the current favourite, although Tabby McTat, Where the Wild Things Are and What the Ladybird Heard are contenders. My 2 year old also really likes We're Going on A Bear Hunt, which I can't bloody stand. It just doesn't read well.

SmokedMackerel · 09/10/2013 16:35

Dd likes A Squash and a Squeeze, Bear Snores on, About a Bear, the Tiger Who Came to Tea, Tom and Pippo, monkey Puzzle, I know a rhino, Silly Suzy goose, A Dragon on the doorstep, and a totally dire story called Snow Bear's surprise, which I do not recommend!

We have a lovely train book called There's a train going by my window, but I think it is out of print. But worth getting if you can find it second hand.

Norfolknway · 09/10/2013 16:42

Tabby mctat, Zog, Goodnight Moon and Monkey Puzzle are all favourites of my 2.3 yo DD.

Oh, and Giraffes can't dance

TheBookofRuth · 09/10/2013 16:48

20 month old DD's favourites are The
Paper Dolls, Night Monkey Day Monkey (both Julia Donaldson), Peepo, I'm Not Sleepy, There Are Cats in this Book and its sequel, There Are No Cats in this Book, and Paddington, which her daddy reads to her at bedtime.

TheSurgeonsMate · 09/10/2013 16:59

The Little Red Train books are great for reading together, the pictures are really special. My dd liked them at that age, and an older child would really appreciate them, but I find that they make the read interesting for me to do time and again as the details are simply awesome.

bacon · 09/10/2013 18:31

Dr Dog, Smelly Bill, Snail & the Whale.

Liveinthepresent · 10/10/2013 15:25

My DD loved the dolls house from same range at this age.

Up2nogood · 10/10/2013 22:22

The Bad Tempered Ladybird and Chicken Licken were great favourites when mine were that age.

CreatureRetorts · 10/10/2013 22:29

The amazing machines books - can usually get them in a pack for a good price.

Eric carle books - especially brown bear brown bear.

The red nose readers by Allen ahlberg (?) - a bit odd, but dd (22 months) loves them.

Pip and posy books by the person who draws for Julia donaldson (axel sch..?)

Jojay · 10/10/2013 22:33

My 27 month old twins love:

The Tiger that came to Tea
Monkey Puzzle (Julia Donaldson)
Usborne's version of The Gingerbread Man
Incy Wincey Spider

Loftyjen · 10/10/2013 22:33

My 3yr old DD got 'Paper Dolls' for her birthday but it didn't come with a warning to read it first...

Hubbie read it, no proves, I read it (am nearly 8mths pregnant) and was a blubbering mess who had DD soothing & comforting me by the end of it!

Is a fantastic story though!

Hamwidgeandcheps · 10/10/2013 22:36

The odd egg - Emily Gravett. Dd who is 4 still loves it :-)

MummyDuckAndDuckling · 10/10/2013 22:37

Dd tonight picked 'Barry, the fish with fingers' Grin she loves it!

smable · 10/10/2013 22:39

Hungry caterpillar, farmer duck, peepo, apple tree farm collection, monkey puzzle, wibbly pig, say hello to the animals

enormouse · 10/10/2013 22:42

DSs favourite at the moment is 'don't let the pigeon drive the bus'. Which he lets me hold occasionally but only daddy is allowed to actually read to him.

He also loves Julia Donaldson, dear zoo, that's not my sodding hamster/panda/reindeer and each peach.

MrsCosmopilite · 10/10/2013 22:48

The Gruffalo, Stick Man, The Gruffalos child, The Tiger who came to tea, Each Peach Pear Plum, Peepo, Monkey Puzzle, What the Ladybird Heard, The Baby who wouldn't go to Bed, Tatty Ratty, Room on the Broom, The Snail and the Whale, Why the Elephant has a trunk. Or at least, these are all current favourites.

She also likes The Night Tiger, Hooray for Fish, and has one about a tractor, but I can't find it to tell you the title. It's tractor shaped with wheels that turn, and goes through a day on the farm with the tractor being used for various jobs.

looseleaf · 10/10/2013 22:49

DS (25 months) loves Ant and Bee books, Superworm, Stickman, Spot and Paddington. He also loves books on maps and volcanoes so quite random and a beautiful counting book with a goose on but I've forgotten its name

LackaDAISYcal · 10/10/2013 22:50

My DC loved the Hairy McLary books at that age too!

Dr Seuss is always good. DS1 was obsessed with Green Eggs and Ham and I can still practically recite all of it six years on!

I'm with you on Zog; I love Julia Donaldson, but I just can't get Zog at all. A Squash and A Squeeze and The Smartest Giant in Town haven't been mentioned yet. Both much loved here.

Aliens Love Underpants is good too.
