5 month old leaking in size 5 nappies at night

My DS is 5 months old and 17Lbs. he leaks wee around his right hip at night. i'm trying to get him to sleep through the night so need a nappy that'll last 10-12hrs. I've tried Pampers active fit 4+, Baby dry 5, Lidl 5, Asda active fit 4+ and their comfort dry 5's. Any suggestions? Am about to try older DS's 5+ asda ones but worry they will be too big.

Isn't size 5 from 22lbs? Tesco Loves Baby nappies are very good

MummyCoolski · 23/09/2013 19:27

I'd go smaller. My 98th centile 14mo is in size 5 and they are huge on him! If the leg holes are loose then wee will escape. Try size 3 & see how you go.

Aldi disposables are excellent. Try two nappies, e.g. a size 4 with a size 5 on top. Or, a wrap like Motherease/Blueberry.

My 5.5mth old is nearly 17lbs and wears 3+ in pampers

PrincessRomy · 23/09/2013 19:31

My 2 year old is nearly 2 stone and only just in size 5 nappies, and wears 4+ sometimes. At 5 months I would have thought it'd be more like a size 2 or 3??

DoudousDoor · 23/09/2013 19:32

Def go smaller! DS weighs 11 kg (so more than 3kg more than your dc) and uses 4+ at night. (Baby dry tho we use an own brand in the day).

StetsonsAreCool · 23/09/2013 19:34

Definitely try a smaller size. DD wasn't even in size 5 when she potty trained - she weighed about 27lb then. When she was 17lb, she was 7mo so still in size 3, possibly even a 2 thinking about it.

MikeLitoris · 23/09/2013 19:34

My 98th percentil 2.9 yo has plenty of room in size 5. I'd try smaller.

TheSkiingGardener · 23/09/2013 19:34

My 6.5 month old is 19lb and still in size 3. I think you've gone too far up

JacqueslePeacock · 23/09/2013 19:35

My 24mo isn't in size 5 yet! I think you need to go down a size.

JacqueslePeacock · 23/09/2013 19:35

X-posts!

StetsonsAreCool · 23/09/2013 19:36

Oh, and going smaller doesn't mean you'll get less absorbency - it means the nappy is more snug around the legs and tummy, so there's no space for the wee to escape from before it has chance to soak in.

ihearsounds · 23/09/2013 19:41

Your nappies are too loose.
Pampers is a size 4, which is 15-40lb, doesn't matter active or baby dry.
Lidl maxi which is 7 - 18kg
Asda midi - 4 - 9 kg

If the pads are too loose around the leg they will leak.

freelancegirl · 23/09/2013 19:45

DS was in size 5 and then 6 really early on as everything else leaked. It's quite common I now know. My doc told me (she volunteered this info, I hadn't mentioned nappy size to her!) that larger babies, especially those with longer bodies often need bigger sizes. Once he turned a year and started walking size 5 fitted well again.

BikeRunSki · 23/09/2013 19:49

My nearly 2 yo is in size 5 at a little over 2 stone. We use Bambo nappies. I think you might only ve able to get them online. They are pricey but exellent. We use them at night and on long journeys - Tesco or Kiddicare own brand the restvof the time.

Ifcatshadthumbs · 23/09/2013 19:52

DS used to leak every night in the end we used size 5 nappy with a pull up over the top. Was the only thing that worked.

Hedgehog72 · 23/09/2013 20:43

I thought bigger size meant more absorbency but learning now not the case. Think I ought to try different brands but stick to the size appropriate for DS's weight. He leaked in the Asda active fit size 4 which is meant for his weight so I guess I thought bigger was the way to go.
He leaks where the tabs join over his hip and then up his side when he does leak.

My dd sometimes has a nappy for long car journeys, she is 3 1/2 and wears size 5 pull ups!

Faithless12 · 23/09/2013 20:50

Silly question but is he pointing down?

RubyrooUK · 23/09/2013 20:53

My 6mo old is around the same weight, on the 98th centile for height, has thighs like the Michelin man and we are using Pampers Active Fit Size 3. They don't really leak much (unless overtaken by a poonami). Do you have any friends who could lend you a couple of nappies to trial a few and find the best fit for your baby?

SoonToBeSix · 23/09/2013 21:06

size 5! My dd 2.8 months is in size five surely that is too big. I would try smaller.

heidihole · 23/09/2013 21:11

dont use active fit for over night. They are built to be thin (easier for baby to move around and be active) but the compromise is that because they're thin they arent very absorbant and don't hold much wee. Certainly not good for over night without a change.

You need regular pampers, fully absorbant ones, and a size 3 or a 3+ i'd say. Size 4 probably still too big which is why they leaked.

Hedgehog72 · 23/09/2013 22:16

Thank you so much for all the comments, many very useful and have given me somewhere to start a new. I realise size 5 are out of his weight range but thought bigger would hold more wee, clearly not the way to go. Again, many thanks, especially info on Active fit - good to know - although just put him to bed in one, Doh!

It'll definitely be way too big. My 7yo is a tall boy, but can squeeze into a 5 when he's run out of really big nappies at school.

Jollyb · 23/09/2013 22:22

Definitely go smaller (nearly 3 year d DD wears a size 5 nappy at night). You could try using a reusable wrap over the top.
