Kamikaze Cod Styleeee or slowly does it?

What did you do?

I've been training DS1 for 2 days now and I think we are doing quite well, although I do have to say it's been pretty hard work and there's not much sign of him taking the initiative himself, especially with pants on.

I spoke to my Mum today and she said something like, "goodness, I don't remember any of that. I just used training pants and you were practically dry before I put you in proper pants. We hardly had any accidents. It was a non - event".

Afterwards, whilst removing a huge blob of poo which had magically appeared on my jeans, I got around to thinking..... Am I really going about this the right way. Would it not be a lot less stressful (but, yes longer and more expensive, I know) to go for a slow and less messy approach? Would it not be just as sucessful? This really is the house of poo, wee and sick at the moment. I even managed to wee myself today (slightly) whilst jumping up and down enthousiastically when DS used the potty (must remember those damn pelvic floors BlushSmile)!

I'd be interested to hear from people who have had sucess doing things slowly and also from people who are anti - pull -ups as to why they are.

Well seen as how I am being held up as a good example - about 10 days but then with no notice. She is gradually getting better though. Also I can often tell that she wants a wee because she starts pacing about and getting grumpy.

And bear in mind that a) I do not have a small baby (although my friend has just trained her 2.3 yo and also has a 12 week old) and b) after the first week I was just about ready for giving up but got told off for this by cod. Then the next day she started getting it.

She is now much more able to wee on demand. I usually make her do one before going to school to collect DS, for instance. Ponka I think you are doing fine honestly! Pity it is not as warm as it was a couple of weeks ago when I started with DD. So much less stressful when they are just wearing pants and t-shirt outside when they have the accident.

Woo - Hoo. What a great couple of days.

Thursday - 1 wee accident. A breakthrough for me. My first communal public thing with no nappies on. I was tempted with those pull - ups but didn't.

Friday - 1 wee accident. After lunch I asked him if he wanted to sit on my knee and he said no and went to sit on the potty to do a poo! He had no clothes on though.

Today - completely dry and took him to the toilet in a restaurant after lunch (when he normally does a poo). I asked him if he could do one and he did!

I know it's been a bit of a fluke and that things might go downhill from here before they go up again but I'm so happy and glad we've not used anything other than pants since Wednesdsay in the day. I know it's only working because I'm asking him to go a lot. Sometimes every 15 minutes to 30, if he's had a lot to drink.

How often should I be asking, really?

I did it the COD way about 3 weeks ago. Dd had chicken pox at the same time . I wouldn't have believed at after the first couple of days but we were dry a week later.

Btw my parents are very impressed that she is dry so quickly!!! [proud emticon]

MrsDoolittle · 25/06/2006 12:59

Oh and I am breast feeding a now 18 week old.
I didn't want to deal with two sets of nappies anymore.

I never need to ask her to go to the toilet anymore - she asks.

COD is excellent

MrsDoolittle · 25/06/2006 13:00

Well done Ponka - Hopefully you have it now

Ponka · 25/06/2006 21:44

3 accidents within 30 minutes today. Very strange. I decided to ask him every hour or so today and we were doing good until these three accidents after lunch. Strange that they should be so close together. I didn't think he drank a lot.

Cheers for the info Mrs. Doolittle. You sound like you have your hands full! How often did you remind your DD when you started out. Still no sign of it clicking with DS and him asking to go himself here.

Another Cod convert here. Tried it the 'other' way the week before, but found it much better when I did the no pull ups.

Been to church twice now and had no problems (that was always going to be my hardest test).

She is wearing them during naps and sleeps but I have found them always try, 4 nights running so looks like DD has that cracked (at least on her way)..

the hardest part of this is that I can't find a travel potty anywhere online!! and I am feed up with carrying a full size one in a rucksack everywhere...

MrsDoolittle · 26/06/2006 13:07

Ponka, every 30 was too much for us, dd becamse belligerent. In the end I'd say very hour, then after a few days I got bored asking and gave up.

She was tantrumming one day, we had had accidents that day, because I was feeding ds. She stomped off outside to the potty all on her own and came back in congratulating herself. That was it, no signs before hand - it just clicked!

zubb · 26/06/2006 13:15

in day 3 with ds2 (2.7) at the moment, no pull ups in sight! Not great success so far but he did go to the loo in town at the weekend so that was great. Am armed with stickers and strawberries and there's no going back, but think ds2 will be a challenge, so may post now and again when I get tempted to grab a nappy!

Ponka · 26/06/2006 14:04

Keep going Zubb. You'll crack it. I'll tell you off if you think about pull ups, if you want. Funny, I have to take a pull up with me wherever I go, even though I'm determined not to use it. It's a security thing. I just like to know it's there.

zubb · 26/06/2006 14:41

I've stocked up on cheap shorts as we're going through them quite quickly! With ds1 he just decided that he was going to use the potty and got on with it, ds2 is too laid back I think! He only wees 3 or 4 times a day so it should be easy enough to crack....
good luck!!

Astrophe · 26/06/2006 15:25

A question for you all:

DD is 2.1, very verbal, totally understands what to do, but will sit on the potty/toilet, hop off, then wee on the floor. She thinks its hilarious. I don't. But we haven't made a fuss, just a "oh, thats a shame...try again next time". Is this a sign shes not ready, or a just a sign of a bold little girl?

She still fills her nappy every night and at nap time, but I'd like to get her out of nappie over summer, especially as I have a 3 1/2 month old who is (obviously) in nappies too.

Ponka · 26/06/2006 23:24

I'm not an expert at all so I'm just guessing here. Does she wee straight after she's sat on the potty? If so, I'd say she already seems to have the ability to wee at a given time and sounds ready. Have you tried bribes yet (chocolate/stickers)?

OP posts:
Astrophe · 27/06/2006 12:14

yes, we've tried bribes but she still wont go. I think we might have to try pants, otherwise I think it might be a long road - shes quite stubborn.

So whats this method then? Just put them in pants and fingers crossed!?

schneebly · 27/06/2006 12:21

Must say that cod stylee seems to be working for us - we have been doing it half heartedly with pull ups etc for a while (due to my own laziness!) and getting nowqhere and then on friday we just put pants on him and talked to him about it and he pooed in the loo for the first time last night and his overnight nappy was dry this morning and he asked for the loo while he still had it on! We have had no accidents yet today and only 1 yesterday! It is great! We will save loads to as he has a littke brother in nappies and we were going through loads!

Ponka · 27/06/2006 21:36

Apostrophe, Cod method is pants on and absolutely no pull ups or nappies ever again in the daytime, even for naps and going out. Lots of praise and possibly reward for something in the right place. Matter of fact and non -dramatic about things in the wrong place. I have been taking DS to the toilet/potty a lot (and he seems fine with that, I wouldn't if he wasn't). Cod told me to start the pants wearing with a talk about being a big boy and wearing big boys pants.

We have done 8 days now. Yesterday we had one joint wee/poo accident right at the end of the day. Today one wee accident because he was in his high chair far too long for dinner. It's not clicked at all yesterday but it's not going too badly. I'm certainly not tempted to give in yet.

OP posts:
Astrophe · 28/06/2006 14:47

Ah, yes, it all sounds sensible.Think we will try it. I've seen Cod around... who is she? A nurse or something? She has a lot to say about a lot of things!

Ponka · 30/06/2006 23:59

How's it going, Astrophe?

Going fantastic here. 2 accident free days. As long as I remind him relatively often, we seem O.K. He took the initiative for the first time on Wednesday and told us he was about to do a poo. I was so impressed. He doesn't ever ask to go for a wee though. He just wees where he is, if I don't take him to the loo.

OP posts:
Astrophe · 02/07/2006 21:22

day 1: 6 pairs of undies wet, 1 pooed in, 1 wee in the potty. nappy at bedtime...don't tell cod!

then we went camping, 1 wee in the pot with undies on, and lots for the grass.

Then she got sick with a tummy bug, so we are suspending for now as pooing everywhere!!

thanks for asking, glad yours is going so well!
