Kamikaze Cod Styleeee or slowly does it?

What did you do?

I've been training DS1 for 2 days now and I think we are doing quite well, although I do have to say it's been pretty hard work and there's not much sign of him taking the initiative himself, especially with pants on.

I spoke to my Mum today and she said something like, "goodness, I don't remember any of that. I just used training pants and you were practically dry before I put you in proper pants. We hardly had any accidents. It was a non - event".

Afterwards, whilst removing a huge blob of poo which had magically appeared on my jeans, I got around to thinking..... Am I really going about this the right way. Would it not be a lot less stressful (but, yes longer and more expensive, I know) to go for a slow and less messy approach? Would it not be just as sucessful? This really is the house of poo, wee and sick at the moment. I even managed to wee myself today (slightly) whilst jumping up and down enthousiastically when DS used the potty (must remember those damn pelvic floors BlushSmile)!

I'd be interested to hear from people who have had sucess doing things slowly and also from people who are anti - pull -ups as to why they are.

I am not anti pull ups as I tried them with ds before going the COD way. The thing was DS just continued to wet them etc as he did his nappy so they just didnt work even with tissue in to feel wet etc so were a waste of money. The cod way had ds trained within a week. Will admit that week was one step forward two steps back but now 6mths on we havent had any accidents in over 5mths and he is also dry of a night.

MerlinsBeard · 20/06/2006 21:32

i dunno what cods way is but found my ds1 got confused with pull ups as they are nappy like. so stuck with pants from word go. remember day 2 being a nightmare as we had run out of trousers, the house was smelly and neiother of us were enjoying it. kept it up tho (why stop and start?) and he was dry and clean on 4th day.

Ponka · 20/06/2006 21:33

Impressive. I guess it just seems like you'll never get there when you first start out. I can see what you are saying about not being able to feel it properly, Nemo.

I went Cod style with my ds. He was dry within a week and dry at night within a fortnight.
But he does have ASD and wasn't ready to be trained until he was 4.

anchovies · 20/06/2006 21:38

Cod stylee worked for us. Took ds (2.3) 4 days and no accidents since. Dry at night since then too.

Surfermum · 20/06/2006 21:41

I had put dd in pull ups before potty training her as they were easier to put on her than nappies. I didn't quite see how they differ from nappies, therefore just went straight to knickers. She was dry within 2-3 days.

sugarfree · 20/06/2006 21:43

I'm afraid pull ups are one of things I go a bit smug and judgemental on.I just don't understand how you can expect a two year old to make the judgement of "have I got pants or a nappy on?" in the five seconds they have between needing to go and going.
All three of mine were trained(Ds1 in 2 days,Ds2 in 2 weeks and Ds3 in a week) by putting them in cheap pants, showing them where the potty is and thats that.
No fuss about accidents,no sweeties for sucesses(lots of praise though)
Do it in a quiet week with nothing much on.Accept that there will be accidents and it is not the end of the world. No stressing or agonising, just matter of fact.
AND NO MORE NAPPIES IN THE DAY,NOT EVER.
Jobs a good 'un.
(btw thats my phrase of the week)

Ponka · 20/06/2006 21:46

Cool. That's how I've been doing it. But I am putting nappies back on for his little sleep and at night. Didn't you do that sugarfree?

OP posts:
sugarfree · 20/06/2006 21:51

Yes at night,no during naps.(i'm brave me,and like to live a little dangerously!)
I am thinking of starting Ds3 at night any time(he's been dry about 3 weeks during the day) because I do think that a nappy at night is a licence to pee to some degree.
I'm sure the other two were well past 3 though.
Hmmm,I'll see how reckless Im feeling after the weekendGrin

Nemo1977 · 20/06/2006 21:58

MEant to add ds was 2.2yrs when we trained.

Cod · 20/06/2006 21:59

ponka

do you want the cod treatement?

Ponka · 20/06/2006 22:04

Hi Cod, were your ears burning?

Based on this, I reckon I do, yes. There's nobody in favour of pull ups and we're doing pretty well without. It's just hard work. Let me know when your next boot camp is please and I'll join, if I've not cracked it by then. I've read bits of previous ones and am trying to stick by what I've read.

The only problem is that my mum is willing to look after both DSs next Monday so that I can have my hair cut and go shopping but only if DS1 is in pull ups Sad. It's such a rare opportunity it's sooooooo tempting but it would undo all the good work. Looks like I'll just have to look like a tramp for a bit longer Grin

how ol dis he>

Ponka · 20/06/2006 22:07

DS is 2.1. That's nearly the same, Nemo and if I've got your MN name right, we are also the same age.

OP posts:
Ponka · 20/06/2006 22:10

Got sweets, yes. They've been useful.

Got care mats and been using them for car, pushchair etc. but have been using them for sleeps. Are you saying abandon nappies for sleeps then? Yikes.

OP posts:
Cod · 20/06/2006 22:11

in the day
YES

Katemum · 20/06/2006 22:14

Ponka my dd has just turned two and has been potty training for the past two weeks. Have had no nappies at nap times and she has not wee'd during her sleep. Give it a try.

Ponka · 20/06/2006 22:14

O.K. Will do.

Will try and fit waterproof sheet. I think we have one. DS is so wriggly he uses the whole bed. A care mat wouldn't cut it.

OP posts:
Cod · 20/06/2006 22:15

yes ds2 was dryer at night before the day
get a pad thign fom mothecare

Nemo1977 · 20/06/2006 22:22

Ponka I was actually told by a doctor at hospital that we dont actually wee in our sleep it is as we stir. So ds was weeing as he woke up so just had to drill it into him that he had to go wee wee as soon as he woke up.

Dont know if we are same age..lol I am 28 /29 in nov and ds is now 2.8yrs.

Ponka · 20/06/2006 22:28

Yep pretty much. I was born in 77. Am now 29, not that that it really relevant to potty training in any way. Just noticed it Grin

OP posts:
spots · 21/06/2006 10:44

Ponka you are very brave, I am using DD2 as partial excuse for not potty training yet... but there's you blazing in regardless of wee-baby-hard-work. Is it the 2 in nappies thing? good luck, will be watching and soaking up (appropriate expression)

Ponka · 21/06/2006 14:41

Brave or stupid, Spots? I'm not sure. It's proving hard but DS just seemed so keen, it's summer and I've not got many plans at the moment (plus Bozza just made it look very easy!)

Day 3 update for Cod.....

Didn't do a big boys talk because we kind of already did that when we started on Monday but all other instructions followed to the letter. Went to my Mums for a bit, too and she said she didn't mind me bringing him with no nappy, even if she didn't think it was a good idea. Has just gone for his little sleep on a care mat.

3 accidents this morning.
Weeing every 15 to 30 minutes either at my initiation or by having an accident. I imagined he wouldn't be weeing so frequently! No inclination/knowledge to ask for the potty still. He does better without pants and trousers on than with.

OP posts:
Ponka · 21/06/2006 14:51

and, Spots, you have to remember that I'm not breast feeding like you are. If I were, I don't think I'd have started now.
