11 yr old DS masturbation. Is this normal?

Just caught my DS masturbating. He was in his bedroom and I just walked in with some ironed t shirts to put in his drawer.
I was shocked and didn't know what to say. He seemed quite nonchalant about it.
If he were 15/16 then I would understand it, but 11!
Is this normal or just far too early?
and what do I say to him about it?

DS is. 4.5 and often playing with his willy. Have walked into the hallway to see him sitting on the stairs, trousers and pants down, properly playing with his erect willy, big grin on his face. To which I say a "put it away!" (Not nastily of course!). He regularly does it when sitting on the loo for a wee (pretty counter productive) and both husband and I have separately come across him tugging in a supermarket trolley seat ( how we aren't banned from Waitrose, I don't know...). The stock answers are "put it away", "you can't wee if you are playing with your willy" and "save it for bath time" (ie do it in private, not it public).

Suspect he won't leave his bedroom by the time he is 11 :(. I will just be leaving large stocks of tissues outside his door.

Think it is natural (and at least yours doesn't do it in Waitrose like mine  ): knocking on the door in future and not making a fuss sounds like a plan :)

Mine has always been quite keen to fiddle with his willy. He is almost 10 now. Oh dear, I suppose I am going to have to start leaving tissues in the bedroom in a year or two.

(Erm, does anyone know at what age they actually need tissues? I mean, as a developmental stage, do they grow stubble first, or get spots or suddenly hairy palms?)

totally normal! I walked in on dss doing the same a few months back (just turned 11). I do usually knock but his door wasn't fully closed and had arms full of ironing.

we had a brief chat about it being perfectly normal and that I wasn't cross but if he could make sure he cleaned up after himself and if his sheets needed changing then to strip them and put them in the washing machine.

Totally normal. As others said, you need to knock before entering.

I would just say something like "sorry for walking in to your room the other day, I'll make sure I knock before coming in"

And leave it at that. Unless of course he was using porn, then firmer words needed

I remember a friend of mine (aged about 14) telling the tale of falling asleep after masturbating - still with willy in hand lying on top of his bed. He woke up to find a cup of tea on the bedside table and a stack of clean laundry on the end of his bed. He was mortified :D

My son started having lots of long showers at that age. I didn't think anything of it until dh said he was probably masturbating. According to DH ejaculation comes a lot later, but he was a late developer so I suppose it's like periods, one day it just happens and the age varies. Probably doesn't need tissues just yet. My DS is 13 now and still likes his showers.

This must have been a troll post at the time, of course it's normal for boys and girls at that age. Hmm

It is perfectly normal at 11 years old, sometimes even younger - it all depends on when your child begins puberty, ect.

I wouldn't approach the subject unless your son asks you any questions.

Just provide him with tissues & baby wipes and let nature take its course.
