How often do you bath your children?

When DD was newborn we were told by HV to bathe her every two or three days. She is now 7mo and we have been bathing her every other day for the last 5 months or so.

I think she should have a bath every day now but DH doesn't agree. Other friends seem to bathe their children daily and I get the impression that DH is trying to limit it to a bath every other day because he is the one who has to bathe DD and he gets home he late so it's a hassle for him and he'd rather not have the responsibility every evening.

(We have agreed that when I stop BFing she will definitely have a bath every night before bed as part of her bedtime routine. ATM, she goes down really well every night with a bedtime breastfeed.)

We did every few days when DS was little.

Now he's almost 3, and is generally mucky due to being into absolutely everything! We do a daily bath (hair every 2-3 days) as it's also a good time for DH to chat to DS and find out about his day. Also seems to separate playing and bedtime nicely.

forevergreek · 24/08/2013 12:59

Every other day. If they are dirty dirty from mud/ tomato sauce then obviously daily.

We mainly shower them every other morning in the shower with us as easier so actual bath maybe once a week, but that's only so they can play, not really to wash hair etc

PoppyWearer · 24/08/2013 12:59

Every night is good for establishing a routine.

BUT with my DC1 in particular it had to be every few days due to her eczema, and this was on doctor's advice.

I've always bathed D.D at least once a day. She's 14 so obviosly baths her self now, at least once a day xx

noblegiraffe · 24/08/2013 13:00

Bathing babies every day is bad for their skin so unless they are filthy I would avoid it. My 4 year old is still only bathed every other day, and his bedtime is fine - it's the stories that are consistent.

RegainingUnconsciousness · 24/08/2013 13:00

Every other day unless he's particularly grubby (DS is 2.5). Although he'll often come in the shower with one of us, rather than a designated Bath.

CreatureRetorts · 24/08/2013 13:02

Why don't you bathe her on the days your DH doesn't?

I assume she gets a wash at least every day, especially if on solids!

rachyconks · 24/08/2013 13:02

Every night. She's only 9m but gets REALLY dirty, crawling, food splattered all over her (hair, eyebrows) etc. it's easier to dump her in the bath than use 50 million baby wipes. We just fill the baby bath and put it in the big bath and she sits and plays.

PoppyAmex · 24/08/2013 13:02

Every single night, sometimes with just a blob of virgin coconut oil in the water if she's not dirty.

She's a toddler (17 months), still uses her hands to eat, I let her mess around in the grass/park/mud so she needs it.

It's her bedtime routine and a very important part of the day for DH to bond/reconnect when he comes home from work (he bathes her every day)

PoppyAmex · 24/08/2013 13:04

DD never had skin problems, but as far as I'm aware the advice not bathe daily for babies with sensitive skin and/or eczema is largely outdated.

Consultants seem to advice daily baths now.

ceeveebee · 24/08/2013 13:05

Every other day for my 20 mo twins - used to bath them daily but DS developed ezcema and GP advised reducing to 2-3 times a week. Stripwash with flannel on non-bath nights. Daily on holiday though as full of sand.
I shower them off sometimes if they are filthy, we have a big walkin shower and all 3 of us get in!

noblegiraffe · 24/08/2013 13:07

Don't know about outdated advice, but my DS developed dry skin patches which disappeared when we bathed him less frequently.

babacoon · 24/08/2013 13:09

We gave DS a full bath every day including hair washing etc from when he was 7 days old till he was about 1 year. Since then he gets a bath twice everyday during winters and 3 times a day during the summer.

ceeveebee · 24/08/2013 13:11

Same here noble, DSs skin completely clear now after reducing daily bathing to every other day.

num3onway · 24/08/2013 13:14

Every other day is fine that's how often I bathe my baby plus older dc

TallulahBetty · 24/08/2013 13:14

DD is 21 months and gets bathed twice a week, same since she was born. Obviously if she needs one on a non-bath day then she gets one. She's just not a "dirty" toddler yet Wink

RoastedCouchPotatoes · 24/08/2013 13:17

10mnth old- three times a week.
2, 3, 5 and 6yo- every two days- so between three and four times a week.

LegArmpits · 24/08/2013 13:17

THREE times a DAY?!

YoniBottsBumgina · 24/08/2013 13:21

Oh god as little as possible.

Probably a couple of times a week.

It takes FOREVER. I don't understand how people have the time or the energy to do it every night.

absentmindeddooooodles · 24/08/2013 13:23

3-4 times a week fir 2.5 ds here. Obviously if hes filthy then as and when he needs it. Bathtime is a huuuuge thing with him. Takes forever! If ibwas to bath him every night we would never get anything else done! I was under the impression that it was better for their skin to not bath thwm so frequently?

Jammee · 24/08/2013 13:25

It's interesting that there is such a variation!

DD gets eczema so we don't use much wash and only do it every other day but she sweats soooo much!

She sweats a lot during every feed and her hair often looks greasy on non-bath days (I think because her hair gets so sweaty). That's why I thought she should have a daily bath now.

It's hard because I'm not the one who bathes her (I cannot bath her with DH) so if DH doesn't want to do it every night I can't really say much.

Do you think a sweaty baby should be bathed more often than a 'drier' one?

Chubfuddler · 24/08/2013 13:26

Every day but I don't wash their hair every day - more like 2-3 times a week.

They enjoy it, they are invariably very grubby by 7pm so they need it and its part of a well established routine which helps them understand the shape of their day.

noblegiraffe · 24/08/2013 13:28

Tbh, if my baby sweated a lot, I'd be putting fewer clothes on her? If my DD gets food in her hair but didn't need a bath, I'd just wash her hair in the sink. I've got a flannel for washing her face and neck creases after meals, which works better than baby wipes.

ceeveebee · 24/08/2013 13:30

Sorry - not sure I understand why you can't bath her?
You could bath her first thing in the morning or during the day if you think she needs it for cleanliness reasons?

hettienne · 24/08/2013 13:42

3-4 times a week for 3 year old DS (sometimes less probably).

I also almost never wash his hair with shampoo, so it doesn't get greasy.
