So The child is 5 ( not my child), sits there eating lunch then breaks wind and starts giggling, What do you say?? If anything after all they are 5, but on the same hand manners have to be taught do they not?? A bit undecided if i should react or not, and if so how??

It is very rude indeed to pick someone up on their table manners in front of other people.

This.

Unless it's immediate family only at the table. Otherwise, I may very discreetly ask my DC not to do something.

GoodtoBetter · 21/08/2013 16:10

I'd say "If we fart we say excuse me" and then ignore it.

Dackyduddles · 21/08/2013 16:11

Oi you! Windy popper! Excuuuuse you!

Make a joke with message. They will get it.

to my own child.

Bowlersarm · 21/08/2013 16:12

Lynette what about food throwing? Or kicking the chair leg? Or repeatedly getting down?

Surely that would be bad manners that would require speaking to the culprit about?

Dackyduddles · 21/08/2013 16:13

Agree only with immediate family. No one else present.

nickelbabe · 21/08/2013 16:14

Bowlersarm - yes, even then.
the parent involved, if it is a child, should take the child to one side and talk to them about it, not make a show of it in front of everyone at the table.

OKnotOK · 21/08/2013 16:15

I cant help but laugh, its just a kid farting!
Adults are a different matter but i am still internally laughing because all farts are funny

weirdthing · 21/08/2013 16:15

My DS age 3 made us all laugh by putting his hand over his bum when he farts 'for good manners'.

Bowlersarm · 21/08/2013 16:15

Well I assume that when most children come round for tea, they're not with a parent?

TrinityRhino · 21/08/2013 16:17

excuse me for a fart
pardon me for a burp

the giggling is unfortunate but expected tbh

they are five, I still find farts funny

froubylou · 21/08/2013 16:17

I'd take it as a compliment as per roman times.

Or if I would claim it for myself if it was a good fart. Save the child being embarrassed by farting in front of other people that aren't family.

Or I would blame the dog. Which is what I do ib front of DP.

I don't fart (much) in front of him. Though as this pg progress' s I am pretty sure that will change. There doesn't seem to be room in there for bump and trump lol.

peggyundercrackers · 21/08/2013 16:18

what do you say?

"that was a good one!"

"another biscuit vicar?"

headinhands · 21/08/2013 16:22

When someone breaks wind in our house we leave it 1,2,3 seconds and then burst out laughing. But then again we do live in a council house eat processed food.

SauceForTheGander · 21/08/2013 16:22

In this house they'd get a mock Shock face and then is probably fall about laughing remind them gently not at the table. Or we'd blame the baby. Amazing how much that baby farts.

It's not a big deal in this house

InternationalPower · 21/08/2013 16:25

Not always now Amber, but I did as a child and my DC know now that farts are not at all funny if released in the vicinity of Grandad! Nonsense to say that you have no control over it and it is rude and disrespectful, even if my dad's approach is a bit OTT.

Actually there is some sense in it. We had terrible problems when DS2 was toilet training. It would have saved an awful lot of mess if he'd sat on the toilet every time he "thought he was going to pop"

Sconset · 21/08/2013 16:30

Surely, one would not comment on such an occurence?

tethersend · 21/08/2013 16:31

I think the most appropriate thing would be to leap onto the table, raise one leg and show him how it's done.

AmberLeaf · 21/08/2013 16:42

I don't understand how a perfectly normal unavoidable thing is disrespectful though?

Grin at Thethersend

InternationalPower · 21/08/2013 16:47

It's not disrespectful to release a noxious smell where people are eating?

ouryve · 21/08/2013 16:48

I'd fart even louder and claim victory :o

AmberLeaf · 21/08/2013 16:49

They aren't always noxious...sometimes they are subtle Wink

lljkk · 21/08/2013 16:50

We make a joke out of it, too. Not least when DH is the culprit.

Bowlersarm · 21/08/2013 16:50

Clearly not in this case Amber

AmberLeaf · 21/08/2013 16:57

I was talking about the smell Bowlersarm.
