Ok so i am a complete freak when it comes to what my DD eats (10 months) i have recently bought a bag of frozen mixed veg, part of me feels guilty because i have always prided myself on buying fresh organic. I find this the cheaper alternative.... Was wondering what everyone's feelings are on frozen veg?

Grin @Superior

Nothing against frozen veg - very handy, perfectly healthy.

As are well-placed apostrophes

Sparklingbrook · 26/07/2013 18:26

Frozen veg is fine.

mummysbigsmiles · 26/07/2013 18:31

I apologise that title was a little messed up!! I was in the middle of making the dinner with a screaming child! Grin

Marvellous stuff - no waste either

SilverSixpence · 26/07/2013 18:35

Nothing wrong with frozen veg, we use it quite often as easy and tastes fine

MerryMarigold · 26/07/2013 18:35

Depends. We love peas and sweetcorn, but froz carrots are weird, brocolli/ cauliflower and beans seem to be soggy. Use peppers too in bolognaise.

MerryMarigold · 26/07/2013 18:36

Oh the steam in a bag brocolli is ok.

Chocotrekkie · 26/07/2013 18:38

Frozen onions are fantastic - saves mess, time and runny eyes. They are cut up so small kids can't see them.

intheshed · 26/07/2013 18:38

The only frozen veg I like is peas or sweetcorn. Nothing wrong with frozen veg in terms of healthiness though.

You can get organic frozen veg too. Oooh onions sound good. I use frozen garlic cubes which are BRILLIANT.

charitygirl · 26/07/2013 18:41

I thought everyone knew that for 'short life' veg like peas and beans, frozen almost certainly retain more nutrients than fresh.

MerryMarigold · 26/07/2013 18:43

OK, related question. How do you get frozen beans not to be overcooked or chewy?

Rummikub · 26/07/2013 18:46

Frozen veg is great. Convenient and good source of nutrients. I have also started prepping and freezing my own veg. Esp organic as its often reduced at end of the day. Frozen sweet potatoes are brilliant, just lob them into a curry. Marvellous. Haven't tried frozen onions yet though.. Are they worth trying?

PicnicPie · 26/07/2013 18:48

Another fan here. They're convenient, economical and nutritious. DD (7 months) loves peas, broccoli and sweet corn. And we love watching her chase them around her high chair tray trying to pick them up.

Maggietess · 26/07/2013 18:50

Frozen veg is fantastic. Often better nutrients than the fresh stuff as its frozen immediately its picked and doesn't sit around wilting.

It's easy to manage portion control with no waste and its very quick. Peas, sweet corn , beans are all staples in our freezer and I also love the diced onions. Again no wastage, no crying and quick and easy.

ZenNudist · 26/07/2013 18:51

Ds won't eat it now he is 3. I don't blame him. It tastes like cardboard. Now I just boil him fresh veg like I'd do for myself.

Used to be handy as it doesn't take long in microwave.

HoneyDragon · 26/07/2013 18:52

A buy a massive bag of onions from Lidl, and lice and chop and grate them then bag them in portions. Cheap and lasts ages.

Sweetcorn, peas, broad beans, soy beans, frozen peppers for sauces and this which keeps it's shape and texture and is a fecking godsend.

Maggietess · 26/07/2013 22:44

ZEN got to disagree... Have a Google of blind taste tests for frozen veg and it's clear there's no discernable difference.

I'm finding it very hard to get organic frozen veg these days... used to have a very wide range, now I'm lucky if I can get peas!
