Ok so i am a complete freak when it comes to what my DD eats (10 months) i have recently bought a bag of frozen mixed veg, part of me feels guilty because i have always prided myself on buying fresh organic. I find this the cheaper alternative.... Was wondering what everyone's feelings are on frozen veg?

I love frozen veg, we steam it and I think it tastes just as good, but takes half the time to prepare!

I can't find organic frozen veg in any local supermarket though, where is it avaliable?

usualsuspect · 27/07/2013 00:38

I use frozen veg. I don't really care if it's not organic.

NeedlesCuties · 27/07/2013 07:49

OP, is your DD your first child?

I was the same as you when my son was a baby, as he was my precious first born. It's very good to want to give your child the best start, but please try to not stress about it.

Almost 4 years down the line there are some days when my son lives on ice-pops and toast, despite having steamed organic veg and high quality meat when I was totally in control of his eating habits as a younger child.

I think it's good you've asked about frozen vs fresh veg (I've got lots of tips from this thread), but please try to not freak out about eating habits.

we use frozen for peas, sweetcorn and peppers

but fresh for everything else

I have also started to get frozen mushrooms and I'm the only one in the house that will eat them and they went off too quickly - great for Saturday fry ups

We have an allotment and freeze our own, the alternative would be to spend a lot of time eating tough elderly vegetables with most of the nutrients gone as there is no way we can get through the whole French bean harvest etc in one sitting.

My children stand at the kitchen gate begging for frozen veg to be put in their little pots (Hee Hee ).
I'm glad it's not sweets they're wanting instead!

growingweeble · 27/07/2013 21:36

Peas and sweetcorn yes. Peppers good for adding to sauces. But the frozen broccoli and cauliflower that I've tried are really horrible.

Twirlyhot · 27/07/2013 21:46

The stuff I linked isn't for babies (not that it would do them any harm) it's for those 'fuck, I have no fresh veg in the house' times when you have to feed adults.

Rummikub · 27/07/2013 21:56

So I will try frozen peppers and frozen onions. Bit scared of frozen mushrooms, are they slimy?

Thurlow · 27/07/2013 22:02

Frozen veg all the way. But then DD prefers it still frozen, the little weirdo. Pasta, pesto and frozen mixed veg is a stable in the Thurlow household, and costs virtually nothing.

ouryve · 27/07/2013 22:04

Frozen veg is fine. I'm sure it's not the only thing you ever serve, anyhow.

mrsmartin1984 · 27/07/2013 23:37

Yes we would all like the time to prepare fresh veg. And it is a bit nicer then frozen. But we all take short cuts, and it's still full of goodness.

Don't beat yourself up. It's still far better then junk food and other forms of processed crap.

DH came back with two tonnes of mushrooms from the market so muggins here ended up researching how to freeze them. I sliced them, sautéed them in oil/butter then let them cool and froze them in batches.

Apparently you can also blanche in hot water for a minute then freeze or steam them then freeze, but sautéing gives the best results?!? I've stuck them into pasta sauces etc with no complaints. I've no idea about the bought frozen ones.

Rummikub · 28/07/2013 01:15

Ah ok. I've frozen fresh mushrooms as is with poor results. I'll try sauté them 1st.
