can you recommend a high chair

DS is 5 months an thinking about ordering a high chair. We don't have much space so I want one with a small footprint - I don't intend to fold it when not in use as I'm happy for it to stay up but I just don't want one that is too wide at the bottom. Other features I would like are easy to clean and able to adapt height/pull up to table and remove tray.

We're really short of space and this is just ace.. tonnes of friends and family use too and always a staple in cafes I've noticed these days. Childminder had some fancy one and dd loathed it, and we were given some other one that never worked for us either.

There was a 'safety' issue with it at some point but it's never been an issue for us. You can get detachable table for it - I think you can also get a cushion or something for it, but I never bothered - personally don't think if child can sit reasonably well then shouldn't be being weaned but that's a different matter!

Brace yourself for an onslaught of posters saying 'antilop'

Second Antelop, brilliant, cheap and goes in the shower as needed!

sleepyhead · 04/06/2013 16:36

Yep, Antelop Grin. Insanely easy to clean which was the most important thing for me after spending hours trying to sandblast weetabix out of the crevices of a padded Chicco monstrosity.

wallpaperaddict · 04/06/2013 16:38

Yeah ikea antilop. We use ours up at table but have the tray when we need to seat more people. Super easy to clean and cheap too.

orangeshortbread · 04/06/2013 17:02

really? I just Googled it and it looks so ugly! and it also does look wide at the bottom.

another option is a Tripp trapp - they are mega bucks but a little cheaper second hand, but they do convert to a child's chair so longer term use.

I have the Antilop though. it goes in the dishwasher, you can't beat that Grin and personally I don't find it ugly, it's quite minimalist.

LaChaiseVerte · 04/06/2013 18:16

Highchairs are generally not that aesthetically pleasing, especially those massive padded ones. I think a white Antilop is fairly neutral.

I am considering the Baby Dan copy of the TT for my older dds (1&3) in the chair mode as JL price match the packages with cushions etc. I wouldn't have wanted something that you couldn't just hose down in the early days, and the Antilop is fab at that.

Antelop Ikea high chair!!!!! Grin

PoppyWearer · 04/06/2013 18:20

The Mamas and Papas Juice one is good, the legs come off so it can be a high or low chair as needed. Easy to clean.

We also had a second-hand Tripp Trapp at one point. Sold it on eBay for a profit!

But yes, the Antilop is good

Bonkerz · 04/06/2013 18:22

Antelop for sure. I had two (am childminder) all singing all dancing Chico ones but they were impossible to clean and very bulky. I replaced with antilop and its brill, easy to dismantle (just four legs that clip in and out) and small enough to store and so simple to keep clean!

I really really recommend the stokke.

It is more pricey but it will last you for years. My son is 8 years old and can still use his chair (you move the seat). The nice thing as well is that you use your dinner table which means the baby is part of the family meal.

does anybody have experience of the oxo tot sprout compared the the tripp trapp?

Chislemum · 04/06/2013 19:19

we have the Tripp Trapp and love it. Almost everyone I know and have asked has the Tripp Trapp.... hmmm, the IKEA one doesn't look bad and I wonder why noone around me decided to get it?

orangeshortbread · 04/06/2013 20:13

If you buy the tripp trapp do you need to buy the harness etc separately?

OP posts:
MelanieWiggles · 04/06/2013 20:20

The harness comes as part of the baby set if I remember correctly. You need to buy the chair and the baby set separately (and a cushion if you want). There is also a newborn kit which you wouldn't need (it's like a cradle for the baby) and a play tray which is useless (basically an expensive place mat).

I LOVE the Tripp Trapp. I had a Chicco Polly for DS1, the worst high chair ever. Too big and difficult to clean. I got rid of it when DS2 came along and bought the TT - it is fantastic. I also bought this which is brilliant. Expensive but worth it if you don't want to constantly keep picking things up off the floor.

jinglesticks · 04/06/2013 20:20

I have a friend who bought the Tripp trapp for use at home and the ikea one for travel. After a few months she has switched to using the ikea one all the time. Honestly, it is great.

carolinemoon · 04/06/2013 20:26

We bought a Tripp trapp for DD1 and an antilop for DD2 - love the Tripp trapp (but don't waste money on the cushions as they just get dirty) but the antilop does just as good a job for now, and for a much lower price! It does, however, have annoying sticky out legs that trip us up even after a year if it being in the kitchen!

breatheslowly · 04/06/2013 20:33

We have this one. It is a bit like the Tripp Trapp but cheaper. The only problem was that the bar across the front is the same height as our table so we couldn't push it in fully. Now with the bar removed it fits really well and DD is still using it at nearly 3.

TheOneAndOnlyAlpha · 04/06/2013 20:40

We have a TT second hand. We don't have much space and we wanted something that allowed ds to sit at the table with us. It's quite good and will last into a proper little chair too... Then a friend gave us their old antilop. It's brilliant. And as the legs detach we bung it in the car and take it to grandparents/friends etc.

Given the choice I'd go antilop.

Gooders79 · 04/06/2013 21:14

We have a Tripp trapp which i love and an antilop which we use for visitors which works perfectly well. We also had a cosatto 360 which was great for the first year we needed it but then Ds learnt how to rock it and it felt really unsafe...

WillowB · 04/06/2013 21:21
