Would You pierce Your Babies Ears?

There was a phone in on Radio 2 at lunchtime asking the above question. A woman had been in a shop and seen a parent holding down a clearly terrified child (6 months or so) who was having her ears pierced, she was quite justifiably horrified. Those in favour argued their babies looked cute. One woman said her daughter had very little hair and people mistook her for a boy (she had ears pierced at 2) er whats wrong with a dress, something pink or just girls clothes if you're that concerned?
As you can probably guess I am against it babies and toddlers can't give their consent. It made me mad to hear parents saying that their dds looked cute or really pretty Shock. Yes babies are cute but, they aren't fashion accessories Angry. Of course there is a safety risk too.
Ok rant done over to you lot now.

yeah and how cute is it when a baby or toddler rips one of those earrings out? (or it gets stuck on something and is pulled out.)

it's not. and it happens.

against it. %110.

ugh.

Wouldn't do it personally but have Spanish friends who have done it because it is the norm in Spain. It doesn't sit well with me, but then I'm one of those freaks with no piercings at all.

I have only just let my almost 7 year old dd have hers done. That was only because she really wanted them.
Is 7 okay do you think?

Haven't read all of this - just briefly skimmed, but the preason I'm posting is because the title reminded me that I was having a row with someone in a dream last night because they had pierced my daughters ears twice without my permission.
Don't know where that came form but just thought I'd share it - ODD

Is this still going on?

trinityrhino · 30/05/2006 14:27

it's just another of those things that people will never agree on

Personally I would never do it, DD's will have to really want it and then I will decide if I think they are old enough, my mum didn't let me till I was 15

I was really surprised when I first heard the Chavvy accusations about people who pierce childen's ears. Italians do this very early my niece had her done by the time she was two. I have mixed feelings on it re the pain thing but I never really thought of it as a downmarket thing to do - Grin
