What do you do if your child's school doesn't have a uniform?

The one thing I really don't like about DS1's new school (apart from the children calling the teachers by their first names, but that's a whole new thread! Wink ) is that it doesn't have a uniform. Not sure how to approach it to make my life easier - should I just decide ad hoc each morning, or should I buy 3 or 4 sets of cheap, basic clothes for school & save his decent stuff for weekends? He'll be 5 in September.

What have other people done?

We have two years to go. But the whole department is determined that he should go someone academicaly 'sound' and socialy supportive. We had some cambridge students visit and it was wonderful to see this kid with peers (at last). There was an undergrad who was a gnats fart along the spectrum from this kid....and the got on like a house on fire.

sorry, that sounded dismissive and glib, it wasn't supposed to. But I have never seen this boy so happy and at 'home'

my friend's son with AS went to, I think, Birmingham Uni, to do maths and got some surprisingly good support from the disabled students office. His mam was so worried about him going but he did much better than expected socially and with daily living. And he did absolutely brilliantly academically too but that was never really an issue for him.

That you for these tips. This boy is going to be fine academicaly as well, but will need some suport

oh yes birmingham should be good- they have a good ASD research group, and also run the online ASD course.

Looks like you can't go wromg by steering him brumwards then, mb. Though I have no idea if they are any good for science!

Bleedin'Norah - I leave this thread for 5 minutes & it all kicks off!

Gladbag - yes, I AM in Islington - he's going to WIlliam Tyndale. Was that your school?

I would just prefer a uniform as DS1 has definite ideas about what he wants to wear & I really don't want that battle every morning. Or the oneupmanship. But it's a really good school, oversubscribed, within walking distance. The other nearest school, walking the other way, DOES have a uniform, but it's cr*p, & I'd rather he had a good education than a uniform. Wink
