Disposable vs reusable - conspiracy theory!!!

I usually use reusables but went away for the weekend and DS was due a monster of a poo so I took some disposables (didn't fancy travelling down the motorway with a big bag of something nasty as a travelling companion!) I noticed that when he'd done a wee it smelled really strongly.....something I have never ever noticed with reusables. Could it be that there is something in the disposables that makes them whiffy so that you change them more frequently or am I turning into a mad conspiracy theorist!!!!:)

dispicables smell awful when wet.

Olipop · 08/05/2006 09:43

Blimey - never knew that before...its rotten! Smelled like I think a 3 week old nappy left festering would smell. NICE!

whenever we use disps (on weekends away) at least once a day I rip the nappy open convinced a poo is in there... and it isn't

I've woken her up a couple of times for this nonsense Sad

just shows that disposables are the work of the devil

We usually use terry nappies at home but I've take to disposables when on the road for similar reasons. The one brand of disposables I've found that doesn't smell rank once you babe has wee-ed, is "Nature Babycare". They are pretty inoffensive.

HTH.

Oh no :( Suddenly realised I'm going away at the end of the month, and we won't be able to use the washing machine! DS's bum seems to be the wrong shape, and every dispicable we've tried on him leaks... Do I just take every nappy I own and come back with a black sack of dirty nappies, or go for dispicables?

We're off on hols tomorrow and I refused point blank when dh suggested taking diposables. Hate them, smell disgusting and dd2 always gets a sore bum on the couple of occasions I've used them.
I'd rather do the washing on hols!

i'd take washables with me, if h was coming with me and could entertain the kdis whilst i made a midweek trip to the launderette.

flamesparrow · 08/05/2006 13:49

Yup, I think I'll take them. We're not going for long (4 days at the most), and I'll just nappy bag em and bring em all home.... It won't occur to DH what we're doing about nappies anyway Grin

misdee · 08/05/2006 13:56

if u have enough for 4 days then take them.

Jessajam · 08/05/2006 14:00

That's what I normally do...DH says "just bring disposables, I'm not carting round a bag of stinking nappies" and I smile and say "fine" and then pack the reuseables and a couple of nice thick placcy bags !! Always manage to bring at least some reuseables...
Mind you, we are off on hols for fortnight and not sure there will be a launderette or similar around so may have to resort to "fake" nappies - yuk! I think it may be beyond my abilities to cope with hand washing crappy nappies! Although...

Olipop · 08/05/2006 16:20

Yes - its just made me think about my upcoming summer holiday....centerparcs with one other family and a bunch of single men....wonder how they will feel about me using the washing machine in the villa to wash bubbas stinkers! Hahaha!

Visions of our tent wreathed in drip-drying nappies!!

fennel · 08/05/2006 16:26

we take both if in doubt and start using the reusables when we are within 3 days of a washing machine (either back home or where we know there's a convenient laundrette).

i draw the line at washing them by hand, but my sister is hardcore and has washed nappies by hand under a cold tap on a basic campsite. stil, i don't think she's bothered going camping in the 2 years since then....

fastasleep · 08/05/2006 16:32

Lol I've already hand washed a couple because DH didn't want pooey ones around and I didn't have enough to get me through to the next day without washing them as I used them when I started Grin

it's not that bad..

AND just in case italianjob sees this, I did actually use breastmilk soap to wash them with as we don't have fairy or any handwashy soap stuff... HA how lentil weavy is that then? Pmsl!

Jessajam · 08/05/2006 16:33

Back to the original point about the smell though....yup...I certainly notice ds smells more in disposables...on top of any, um, natural, scent there is a foul, almost yeasty, chemical smell...found it was worse with the brand name ones (can't remember, maybe huggies?) I used during those foggy first few days when the whole idea of putting together a nappy AND a liner AND a wrap was on a par with suggesting I knit the thing from scratch each time!!
Plus, leave a baby in very wet disposable and they can get strange crystals on their bottom (not that I deliberately expereiment you understand, but it happens! DS is very tolerant!)No crystals with reusables, just damp patches!

Laura032004 · 08/05/2006 17:01

If we are going on holiday for a weekend, I take a lot of my cloth liners (cut up bits of old sheet). If DS does a poo, or a small wee, I can often get by on just changing the liner, and keeping the same nappy on. If I'm feeling extravagent, I throw the liners away. You can make 30 or so liners from an old double sheet (£1 from charity shop), so still cheap and no nasty smells!

flamesparrow · 08/05/2006 17:12

Grin I think you're all nut for going camping with a child in nappies in general!!!

But a piece of cotton doesn't stop the bacteria from the poo reaching the nappy that stays on all day.

moondog · 10/05/2006 14:33

lol at misdee's 'despicables' and fa washing hers in breastmilk soap.
Seriously hard core!

I find myself almost hallucinating from the ammonia when I put ds's dry pailed nappies in the washing machine.

fennel · 10/05/2006 14:35

the seriously hardcore would be growing their own hemp and weaving it into nappies.

fruitful · 10/05/2006 14:40

Olipop - are you absolutely certain there is a washing machine in your villa at Center Parcs? I thought there was just a launderette on site.

Or a service wash; where they collect and return - now that would be a laugh to try, wouldn't it?

Olipop · 10/05/2006 21:18

OOOh lordy - hadn't thought about no washing machine at all!! Surely I can just chuck em in the hot tub...no one would notice! Although I think the bacteria levels in hot tubs are probably higher than whats found in nappies :o
