He's slept for four hours this morning in a wet and dirty nappy (only discovered it was dirty when I got him up!), and poor wee soul, his bottom is really sore and the skin is broken Sad. He is perfectly happy and content in himself, amazingly - I have left his bottom uncovered to air dry just now - but what should I put on it?

Oooh I feel really guilty - never had a baby with nappy rash before Sad

DD2 gets terrible rashes with her teething.
we sue water and cotton wool rather than wipes, and then sudocreme. Ususlly it is better by the next change.

it is so horrid though.

cod · 05/05/2006 14:03

they sayt hat meta whatever stuff
i liekdd the botos sudicoreme copy

Miaou · 05/05/2006 14:04

Would that be sufficient on a bleeding bum do you think?

Never use wipes, just water to clean anyway Smile

Put him out in the sunshine, on his tummy obviously. Sunshine works wonders for nappyrash.

If you have camomile tea, then make a cup and add a tablespoonful of honey. When that has cooled it makes a soothing and cleansing wash for the skin. You can keep it in a clean jar next to the changing table for a day or two, and dip cottonwool in it for every nappy change. If you use babywipes - then stop! The chemicals in babywipes can be very aggressive on delciate skin, and may aggravate the rash. If you want to use them, then rinse some out in plenty of water, until the water runs clear, and then use them with the camomile and honey solution.

Sudocrem is excellent for nappy rash, as is Metanium, and many people swear by Kamilosan. When mine had bad nappy rash (and, yes, occasionally it can be so bad that they bleed Sad) then I would use plain water or camomile tea to clean them, and only use nappy cream at night or if I knew they were likely to poo.

Aw, ds got this a couple of times, once dh took his nappy off and some of his skin actually came off with it!!!

I washed it with soapy water and let him play around with no nappy on for as long as I could stand, then put vaseline on it. Change them more often until it heals and wash it each time with soapy water.

charliecat · 05/05/2006 14:04

leave the nappy off as long as possible
Sudocreme when youve got to put it back on.
If he wees water it off gently with cotton wool

LIZS · 05/05/2006 14:04

Metanium worked for us except when dd got a fungal infection and needed a prescription for , I think, Imazol.

Miaou · 05/05/2006 14:05

yep, what is that stuff, meta.....

Dh is on his way in to town so I will ring him to get some if I can find out what it is... Grin

Speaking to a nurse who worked at A&E she once said that if a road crash victim comes in, the only thing they use to treat the wounds is soapy water. All these creams have no effect, they heal just as well without. They don't use them at all in A&E.

lucykate · 05/05/2006 14:08

hi miaou Smile

you have my symapthies, my ds had really bad nappy rash after being on antibiotics and it was hard to shift. if you have a chemist nearby, try either bepanthen (its a new cream and a little expensive), its very greasy looking and sticky but worked, or vasogen (cheap but not stocked everywhere), this worked too and is what i use in preference to sudocrem. i think its a case of finding which cream suits his skin type the best. not used it myself but the other one to try is the yellow one, metanium?, thats supposed to be good too.

hope his bot clears up, poor lamb.

PrettyCandles · 05/05/2006 14:08

Just remembered that I put Lansinoh on dd's bum - and it worked really well!

For the most part the creams act purely as barriers when the nappy is on again, so that the pee and poo won't aggravate the sore skin. Some creams (like the ones listed) have factors that improve healing or antisepsis.

fireflyfairy2 · 05/05/2006 14:12

Metanium!! It's a god send!! My ds bum was bleeding on Monday, I immediately put metanium on at every change, byt Thursday morning it was completely gone! It is in a yellow box with purple writing on it :)

frumpygrumpy · 05/05/2006 14:16

METANIUM, METANIUM, METANIUM.

It is the most amazing thing. Smear on very thinly, just a tiny bit. I keep a tube always cos even a cold gives mine get red bots. DD used to get horrific nappy rash and even sore and bleeding this made an almost instant difference.

frumpygrumpy · 05/05/2006 14:16

Must be on thin so the skin can breathe through it.

Waitrose Bottom BUtter is lovely. Smells delicious and will protect but not aggravate sore skin. It's all natural.

Miaou · 05/05/2006 14:23

oooh thanks everyone. He is starving hungry so I have slathered it in sudocreme for now and stuck a kooshies nappy on him. Can you get metanium in Boots then? (A small Boots?)

another vote for metanium, dd has had a horrid rash this week because of teething and metanium has made a big difference.

Piffle · 05/05/2006 14:25

water and or baby soap (if needed) to clean
lots of fresh air (great weather for bare bums) metanium is very very good, dd had horrendous bleeding rash with teething and metanium was good.

yes, it is pricey but use it sparingly and it will heonestly last ages!

eidsvold · 07/05/2006 12:49

metanium worked on dd1's bleeding bum when she was in hospital..... warm water to clean with.

sparklemagic · 07/05/2006 13:02

another vote for metanium here, whenever DS had a sore rash it would clear it the same day! It's amazing stuff.

We've had our tube since DS was a baby and he's nearly four now - so a worthwhile investment! Grin
