My baby's head is a strange shape and it makes me sad that I notice it

I have posted lots on here since my ds arrived over 4 weeks ago but I haven't been able to write about this before.

My ds has a strange shaped head, it almost looks like its oblong at the back, like he has a cyclists helmet on. It's not perfectly round, like I thought all babies heads are.

It makes me feel like I am picking faults with him by even writing this down. I'm not I love him to bits but his head looks funny. We have raised this when he was born, he has been checked out by doctors and they say there is nothing wrong with him, measurements are all fine but it looks funny to me. His head is fine when you look at him from the front but when you see a side profile of him or look at him from the back, there is an oblong shape to the back of his head.

I feel disappointed that his head doesn't look perfect. I feel disappointed with myself for noticing. I'm a teacher, so I'm worried that he will be teased at school. I can't believe I worried about this already as he's only 4 and a bit weeks.

What else can I do? The specialist nurse we took him to when he was a week old, said enjoy him, he's perfect. The said his hair will cover it, or he can wear a hat! So clearly she could see something was unusual.

Sorry, I'm rambling. Sad

Head, shapes change a lot, hair DOES cover, photo? So we can actually see?

OutsideOverThere · 03/03/2013 12:11

Pink, their heads change all the time. Seriously. Ds1 had a normal sized head at birth, it then went FLAT at the back Grin for a few months as I presume he was lying on that bit too much - and then it went completely normal again - well I think it did - he is 9 now and looks normal!

Please don't worry about this. It's very likely that it was lengthened a bit during the birth and the bones are not yet set in place at this age. I would put money on it normalising very soon x

OutsideOverThere · 03/03/2013 12:12

Unless of course by oblong, you mean it actually has corners Grin

That would be daily mail material my darling!

They mostly have odd shaped alien heads to start with! They go 'normal' eventually!

Twinklestarstwinklestars · 03/03/2013 12:18

My ds' head is a funny shape, sort of flat but one side is bigger than the other. It's a lot less noticeable at 3 yo but he does struggle a but with sunglasses etc as they don't sit quite right but the paediatrician said to leave it and hair etc would cover it which it does a bit. I don't notice it anymore really, and they were never concerned as his head grew at the right rate.

Pinkflipflop · 03/03/2013 12:24

I will try to put a picture up later. I'm strangely comforted that other mums think their baby's head looks funny too. If he has a thick mop of hair it probably will cover it but if he has fine hair, I think it will still be noticeable.

No one has a perfectly round head. My DS's head is a bit pointy at the back Grin but better than being flat I reckon.

Anyway, they all look funny with no hair.

AladdinOnRepeat · 03/03/2013 12:28

My 4 week old has a really bumpy knobberly head, with a flat bit at the back. I think it will smooth out as he gets older Smile

Shakey1500 · 03/03/2013 12:29

It's totally normal but I understand why you feel how you do.

I was useless when ds was a newborn ( not saying you are btw!). I recall ringing my sister in the middle of the night screaming "HIS HAIR IS FALLING OUT,HEEELLLP!"

Hadn't realised that baby fluffy hair does fall out a bit on the moses basket pillow Blush

wintersdawn · 03/03/2013 12:33

My daughters head looked fine from the front but from above was totally lopsided at the back due to to many failed attempts with forceps! It is sort it's shape out on its own by 18 months but her hair had covered it to everyone but me by the age of 1 year. I would t worry about it, it's amazing how the shape does change.

I have seen babies at baby groups with really, really weird shaped heads. Seriously - totally flat ones, some that are bigger on one side, knobbly ones. My Dd's hea definately isn't perfectly round. I've never noticed an adult with an odd shapes head though so I reckon they must even out at some point!

If you click on the button on your page that says 'allow users to see your profile' or something - at the moment your name isn't clickable iyswim.

Pinkflipflop · 03/03/2013 12:52

I've done that now!

My baby's head was utterly freakish when she was born. All pointy like an alien. She looks mostly normal though.

KittyLilith · 03/03/2013 12:57

Don't worry. DS3 had a very oddly shaped head. I was a bit worried he was part Klingon Blush as he had a sort of ridge on his forehead and a half-squished sort of thing going on at the back. He's 17 months now and his head is fine.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 03/03/2013 12:57

Awww, gorgeous baby, completely normal :-)

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 03/03/2013 12:58

Pink - it looks totally normal and kissable to me Smile

DS1's head was practically conical after ventouse and that recovered.

MajaBiene · 03/03/2013 13:02

Bless you Pink, that is a totally normal head Grin

shinyblackgrape · 03/03/2013 13:02

My 13 week old DS's head was very strange at that age. He started out looking like an alien with a pointy head and then it sort of went flat and square on the top - like a cartoon character whose had an anvil dropped on his head! I used to spend a lot of NCT meetings covertly studying the other babies heads and worrying! However, our lovely GP said it was entirely normal. He now has a lovely round head and DH and I were actually commenting on it this morning.

They change so much though that he could easily wake up with a flat head tomorrow.

We've always used a baby sleepcurve mattress though and I do think they are worth getting. DS has sern the osteopath who invented them as i had a forceps delivery and DS couldnt turn his head to the right after it. One session and he was sorted. Might be worth a google - amazon usually cheapest

sleepyhead · 03/03/2013 13:04

That head is very normal! What bit is it that you're worried about? Seriously, I can't see anything that's different from most babies that age.

Virtually noone has a perfectly round head by the way. I think perfectly round would probably look a little odd.

BaldricksTurnip · 03/03/2013 13:05

His head looks absolutely perfect and normal to me!
